Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Moving from 600 to 1000 Fazer
« on: 26 February 2016, 12:57:03 pm »
I have owned and serviced my 1998 600 Fazer for a number of years and interested in getting a 1000 Fazer.  Is this a wize decision or should I run?  My knowledge of the 1000 is poor.  What should I look out for and are high mileage bikes worth looking at?  What are the big things that go wrong and are there major differences in the years?  I do like to service my own bikes and is the 1000 a pleasure or beast to maintain?

(These questions may have been answered already so point me in the right direction)

FZS600 Fazer / Re: broken exhaust studs
« on: 10 July 2014, 02:26:04 pm »
OK don't do this  :rolleyes

I had two middle studs snap on me.  I laid the bike down on a mattress to get easy access, tied the wheel up and very very slowly drilled the studs out starting with a very small high quality metal drill bit, increasing the size of the drill bit as I made progress.   Did take a week of careful drilling and lots of cups of tea and nerves.  Had to make sure I was drilling straight  Replaced with new studs ordered from AJSutton.  As I say don't do it.....unless you you have lots of tea!

Just a follow up on this post.  The bike is back in working order and all it needed was replacement of two springs.  Fairly easy job, you do have to remove the clutch but this is pretty straight forward so don't be daunted by doing this job.  Send me a message if you want more details.

I am going to remove some covers and see what's going on.  My lever does have some free play so will tighten that up.  I will update when I sort out the problem.

FZS600 Fazer / Trouble getting into 3rd gear
« on: 31 January 2013, 01:28:29 pm »
I can shift up to 2nd but it won't go up to 3rd.  The lever moves up but it just stays in 2nd.  I then have to change down to 1st then back to 2nd a few times and then the gears work fine for the rest of my journey.  After leaving the bike until after work or overnight the problem comes back until I shift between 1st and 2nd a few times.
Any ideas?  The bike is a 1998 FZS600 with 30k on the clock.  I commute 70 miles a day mostly on the motorway so gearbox is not extensively used and I change the oil every 6 months.

Introduction / New found respect for the Fazer!

After 92k miles the Gearbox on my BMW GS has decided to give up.  While that is being repaired I decided to get my wife's Fazer 600 (1998) back on the road.  Her riding boots were packed away when our first daughter came along six years ago and since then it has been sitting in the garage.  I know, I know its not good for a bike to sit around  :rolleyes .  Well it passed the MOT without any issues and I started using it for my 72 mile trip to work and home everyday.  After the GS it did feel rather small and at 6ft1in the wind was catching my head on the motorway, something I am not used too!  I was truly amazed how nice this bike is to ride considering this was the original Fazer.  OK you certainly have to rev it more than a 1150boxer but it's fast and smooth not to mention bloomin light.  Motorway travel is a joy and I am getting used to the wind buffering my head.  Only thing is I can't see behind me so will have to get an extender or something (any ideas?)  The engine seems to purr rather than growl but have come to love it.  What an amazing little bike and fuel consumption is truely amazing, savings for sure.  When my GS is fixed I may just have to find excuses to use the Fazer  :D
