Can't upload a picture from hard drive

Had a go at posting a picture earlier, but the site wouldn't upload one direct from my hard drive 
 
Any ideas, do I need to check anything specific in my profile settings?

Seems to throw a wobbler if the size it too big, although I recently increased the limit to 15MB - how big is your pic?

What happens when you try to upload one? What prevents you?

I'd put some text in this box, then clicked on 'Additional Options' --> 'Browse', selected the picture I wanted to upload, clicked 'Preview' and the text was there but no picture appeared.
Original file was 1.75Mb, resized to 744kb, same thing happened with both versions.

That's interesting, when I don't bother with 'Preview', & just Post, it appears

ah, that worked nicely  .  now for uploading avatars
