FZ1: Mirror Mod - FZS mirrors on FZ1
« on: 05 December 2020, 02:51:00 pm »
SUMMARY

So I am buying a 2007 FZ1, and one of the issues that needs to be fixed is both mirrors need replacing. So before the bike shop replaces them with stock mirrors, can I ask has anyone fitted different or other Fazer mirrors to the existing mounting points..? Im asking because FZ1 like the Z1000SX have mirrors that don't move all that easily. I commute in/out of London so need mirrors that pull in & push out as easy as the ones on my FZS1000 did.

THE MOD

So 2 options I'm looking at are -
  • Adjust the tension on the base on the FZ1 mirrors so they fold back easier.
  • Or cut the bottoms of a set of FZS and FZ1 mirrors and weld the FZS base/s onto the FZ1 mirrors. Allowing to them mount the FZS mirrors on the FZ1.

Where have you found those adapter please?

I am thinking about some different mirror for my gen1 too. I am not too happy with standard ones.

One of the option I d like to try is to fit mirrors onto the handlebars.

Regarding the adapter phone, it was a random picture for a duckduckgo search.
you can find bar end mirrors all day long.

As I needed a pair of mirrors for the FZ1 and had been unable to find some s/h OEM, I went and got a set from Wemoto and to be fair thay look quite good and the rotating hinge and pod joint feel the same as OEM. Anyway back to my mirror mod, I now have a set of FZ1 and FZS mirrors and have come up with a possible solution.
I will approach a machine shop to get them to make up a set of spacers that the FZS mirrors will bolt too and then themselves bolt in-place of the original mirrors. The rubber boot is the perfect size and depth to base the spacer dimensions on and shouldn't require any modification of the FZS mirror base. So am wondering if this bracket will have to be machined or if it can be 3D printed.

So stay tuned.

So after a quick chat with Gnasher, he suggested a much simpler solution. As the mirror mounting nuts aren't captive and as I have plenty of clearance under the mirror mount points on the subframe. All I have to do is elongate the holes inwards to accommodate the FZS mirror studs. So order of operations on paper are -

  • The stud diameter is 6mm on both mirrors so holes will not need to be modified.
  • The stud spacing on the FZS mirrors is 27-28mm and on the FZ1 mirrors its 40mm, so I only have to elongate both holes inwards by 6mm.
  • It looks like I will have to re-use the FZS mirror spacer-rubber, so I will be swapping out part 42 in the attached image. And I will have to possible enlargen the holes on the rubber spacer to accept the metal spacer the FZ1 mirrors use(see part 44).
  • Then finally I will cut a 2-3mm rubber space of the same footprint as the FZ1 mirror boot to fill in the gape/space FZS mirror base the fairing.

Where have you found those adapter please?
Its made my SW-Moteck, I have checked and its still a current stock item, but your looking at January now - https://www.sw-motech-shop.co.uk/Mirror-extension-Profile-Black-Yamaha-FZ1-Fazer-08-

And looking at the spacer I should be able to apply Gnasher's suggestion to that also. Ive been told my the shop above that its polymide plastic, so even easier to elongate the holes with a round file.

So found a set s/h on FB, so it should be dead easy to mod them to accommodate the FZS mirrors

So the adapters arrived today, will see if I can find a local machine shop or guy with a overhead mill to elongate the holes.

So finally got around to fitting the FZS mirrors to the FZ1 and they work as intended, only fly in the ointment is the even more prone to fowling on the bar on full lock than they were on the FZS. So I am going to appraoch the company that makes the adapters and see if they might be interested in making a tweaked adapter for FZ1 riders.

I have to grind down the ends of the studs on the FZS mirrors by 5mm as they were a tad too long, and I put some grease under the bottoms of the adapter to prevent dust/grit ingresse between the fairing and the adapter. And also 2 washers under the FZS mirrors as spacers to prevent crushing of the rubber boots against the adapters.
