Title: Mod 1 test
Post by: Panthor on 13 April 2012, 01:21:59 pm
On Monday I will finally be doing my mod1 test and if all goes well mod2 on Friday. Just wondering if anyone has any advice? I've got training on Sunday but any extra advice would be much appreciated

Expect the examiner to come accross as very serious :'( but expect this from the (tw@*) and dont let it put you off.  Take loads of deep breaths when hes telling you what to do next as soon as youve listened ignore the rest of his blurb tell yourself to do your shoulder checks keep calm and relax and show him what you can do. I was absolutely crapping myself  :lol  but i passed with no minors and found it easy just keep watchin all the vids on you tube then the mod 2 is a piece of piss regards Kazz :D .

what is this mod that people talk about
(http://www.urbanimage.tv/highlight_images/rock-and-pop-sting-and-police-quadrophenia.fl_0257.jpg)
in my day you hacked up with a rough h@nda g5 and twice around the block and voila. you only failed if you hit the examiner on the e stop.
good luck...........and just think of the examiner naked........with a ball gag and butt plug inserted :b

As above relax.
But don't be so relieved about passing mod 1 (as its allegedly hard, its not) that you relax too much in mod 2 and fail it like i did, twice. :lol
Still got loads of practice out of it.
Good thing doing it on different days though.
Let us know how you get on.

instructor advised doing different days so we can concentrate on mod 1 training the day before that and mod 2 training for the 2 days before that test.  I think im just getting a bit nervous cos i really want to pass and go out for a ride on my fazer.

Lol I was the same as you shiny new Fazer sat in the kitchen wanting to go out and play :sun . Couple of things that helped me Dont use any back brake on emergency stop and start to brake as soon as you go through the speed trap , and when you do the swerve dont go through the cones straight go on an angle towards the swerve cone makes it much easier also shut the throttle off as soon as you go through the speed trap on the swerve as it makes the steering (swerve) really easy remember the examiners an  :moon ..with a gimp mask on..lol
Good Look Kazz

Apparently there's nothing wrong with asking the examiner if you were fast enough through the speed trap on your high speed stuff. I think it's after the swerve you have to park up with your front wheel in a square of cones, make sure you do cos I saw someone fail for stopping where he shouldn't.
Don't look at the floor when you're doing the slow stuff, your body has a tendency to go where your head is pointing.
Do your observations every time you start to move the bike (even when it's turned off).

Following on from the rest of the sound advice I would add the following:

When doing your faster elements (emergency stop, hazard avoidance) DON'T GO ABOVE SECOND GEAR WHEN GETTING UP TO SPEED!
This  is one change too many and over complicates things.
In addition, when you come off the throttle IMMEDIATELY after going through the speed trap, you have the benefit of engine braking to assist you with your emergency stopping.
This same engine braking will mean you carry out your avoidance manoeuvre at a much reduced speed making it easier and less severe.
DO ask the examiner what your speed was after your first go through the speed trap, it is allowed and knowledge is power.
If at all possible, get to the test centre an hour before so you can watch earlier trainees doing it for real. When you see someone pass who clearly isn't as good as you, it is a real confidence boost.

8 months ago, I was in your shoes. I passed both Mods first time (Monday and Friday like you) and now wonder what all the worry was about.

I WISH YOU THE VERY BEST OF LUCK

Thanks for the advice guys. After the training yesterday I was confident going into it and passed with no minors and really felt kinda of silly building it up so much. Just gotta get mod 2 done now and then it's fazer time! :D

Nice one, remember mod 2 is still a test. and other road users are involved and not under your control.

well in, good luck for your "propper" test. If you can get out on a 125 the day before to practice riding whilst doing all your observations/procedures and talk yourself through what you are doing, helps relax you.

Well done on passing your Mod 1, my wife takes hers soon, she is in two minds as to what bike to take it on, use her Suzuki vanvan 125 or a bigger bike so no restrictions, what bike did you take your mod 1 test on  :lol

Congrats, just Mod 2 to go.  I was in your shoes almost 2 years ago now.

I was told with regards to Mod 2 that the examiners like to see you make progress, my instructor (toungue slightly in cheek) reckons I passed within the first couple of minutes because we left the test centre (Herne Bay) and went straight on the the dual carriageway, I came off the acceleration lane just as a lorry had passed, a gave a good life saver, straight out in the overtaking lane and overtook him!  Apparently that's how to get on the good side of the examiner!  :D

Practice hill starts and pulling out from being parked up behind a parked car.

Ride confidently with good lifesavers and great road positioning, especially at junctions and you'll be fine!

I did it on a Kawasaki z650n. Excellent bike for learning on, I did have a go in the test yard on a new Yamaha 125 that the instructor wanted to test out but I found to do the speeds on that it had to be in third gear which just added to the things you had to do and I found using the 650 a lot easier.

Well done and what a first bike to be starting off on! I had to continue with my 125 for a couple of weeks until I could find my first big bike (the longest 15 days 13hours and 10 minutes of my life, not that I was counting  :lol )
