fzs1000 new clutch cable
« on: 17 April 2016, 06:22:06 pm »
Thought i post this incase it helpd someone,i purchased my new fzs1000 on 1st March 2006,the bike would have been in its 3rd year with 8000 miles on it before i first lubed the the whole clutch cable with WD40 or light weigh oil, since then i have done it at least once a year until i see oil dripping out the bottom of the cable, well i bit the bullet last week & ordered a new clutch cable from fowlers £40.57 + vat+ £3 postage! today i have fitted the cable today & i cant seem to get my head round how much lighter the clutch now is,its gets better than that all the gears up or down now select much much easier,if anyone was thinking of buying a genuine Yamaha cable i hope this helps, cheers Steve

I've been thinking of replacing the clutch cable on my Gen 2, but have been put off by reports that it's real pain and involves removing the tank amongst other things. Did you find it straightforward?.

HI Rob,sorry I should have may it clearer,my bike is a fzs1000 gen 1 etc that was purchased just as the first of  the new gen 2 were in the showrooms,it took me a relaxing 30min,i not read much about gen 2 replacements but I sure there be some one on here close to you who give you a hand as sure its not that hard, forgot to mention do not buy any of the after markets replacements as I brought a SlinkyGlide 2 years ago & the bevel? end that's goes into the chrome adjuster by the clutch does not even fit! cheers Steve

Routing the clutch cable on gen1 is not that bad. Lifting the tank helps access but is not absolutely essential. I suspect the new cable is so much nicer because WD40 is not the right tool to lubricate cables with. It works well in the short term, but the fact that it is a solvent means not only will it dry out, but it will clear out any other grease that was in there. Stick to 3in1 or light oil.

Thanks for the replies.
I think that the problem is access at the clutch end for the Gen2. The only good thing is Fowler's list the cable at £29.
