Title: Tyre choice
Post by: fazerdude1 on 29 April 2012, 11:40:12 am
Hi all, can anyone recommend a good sports touring tyre for my 00(y plate) FZS600? I currently have Sportmax on front and rear, these are what was fitted when i bought the bike so stuck with a match when the rear needed changing. I'm not the sportiest of riders and would like to put a more durable tyre on for longer trips and a bit of rance this summer. Cheers.

i have dunlop roadsmart tyres and i cant fault them. i've probably done about 1000km on them and thers no real signs of wear on them yet so they should last well

Im running Bridgestone Battlax BT023s front and rear - cant compare to anything other than the worn out tyres I had before (BT016s) which were so worn it was an unbelieable change. In any case, im very happy with them so far both dry and wet :)

 :agree
Run 6000 miles through mine and starting to show signs of squaring off, ok i don't rag it but my mate got the same milage out of a z1000 and he does rag his bike.

Michelin PR2's prob'ly last longest but also cost the most
Pirelli Diablo Stradas last nearly as long & were very cheap on M&P website recently
Bridgestone BT023's most people rate them highly too

Like RobFZS, I am also loving the Michelin Road Pilot 2's.

Great in this interchangeable weather.

Inlaw and myself both use avon storms on our fazers, get around 5000 out of a rear and no issues.previously tried Conti attacks they squared of at 3000 .

My PR2s are just about ready to need changing and they've done 7000 miles in all weathers. Very impressive grip levels. I'll be replacing with same.

Road pilot 2s are the best tyre I have had but they cost a lot. Mine are beyond worn now - getting another pair on Wednesday - but I did at least 11K miles............

Just got some Road Pilot 3s.

What with the wet weather I've not really scrubbed them in yet - but they still offer confidence inspiring levels of grip.

As to the cost - yes - pricey.  BUT for the odd 30quid for a pair in the scheme of things is good value for the wet grip that might save you from a spill which could cost lots worse....

Running Maxxis Diamonds on my fazer 1k.  So far, love 'em but not really able to comment on the tyre wear yet but have seem reports of 7 - 10k before needing changing.

Michelin PR3s on mine & they really are superb, never felt so secure on wet roads & they seem to be wearing very well too.  I did a 3K+ mile tour down to the Alps for a play on them last summer & when I had it MOT'd not long afterwards,  the guy mentioned that they looked pretty new & looked genuinely surprised when I told him they'd been on there for 4K miles.  :)

One of the things I've always wondered about is how you find the limit of grip in the wet,,,,,

Personally, I choose life!

Well, Jesus...

Went on the Bridgestone web site to find the idea pressure for my tyres and it said I should be running BT 023's!

You would be amazed at the amount of grip in the wet  :eek
Once you get some heat into the tyre (and not too ham fisted with the throttle/brakes)
It's all about confidence and getting the 'feel' and feedback to push-on
The Pr2's are a very good tyre and last about 6000 even with 'spirited' riding
+1 for Michelin

Yeah, it's normally worn out road surfaces, shite and diesel holds me back! And the repair bill....

Avon Storm 2 Ultra. Still excellent after 5k in all conditions. They are duel compound so unlikely to square off prematurely.
I have never taken them on a track though.

Metzler z6 Cheap, reliable (especially in the wet) and durable...purchased on the recommendations of local garage who have been in business longer than I have lived

Just done a 1000 clicks to Raasay and back on a new pair of Dunlops. In the dry and wet they behaved impeccably, first time on Dunlops for me and they get a big :thumbup 's up.

Metz or Pirelli (merged, make similar tyres). Loads more rubber and a lot firmer tyres than most other I've came across (including Mich. Pilot Roads, Conti Road Attacks, etc...). A definite plus for the badly paved roads in my country.

Michelin's all the way. Road pilot 2's were good 3's are better. A good example is one of my friends he goes the same way home from work every evening for years he used michelins. Early part of the year he changed maxxis tyres for budget reasons. a couple of weeks ago he slid and fell on a manhole cover that he has ridden over previously with the michelins and not even a twitch. No diesel involved he looked when he got up.

PR2's were good but had a lot of punctures. not had before (Metzelers) or since. Coincidence? I don't know
but it was bloody expensive.
Now on Avons and once the pressures sorted they are as good as the PR2's wet or dry.

Pirelli Diablo/Rosso, for the last 4 or 5 years, I am so happy with them. I am not able to compare them except to older Dunlop models. Not good for wet roads though.

Do you think that Metzeler are exactly the same or do they change a bit?

i have not had one fault with maxxis Tyre either the sport touring Tyre or the super sports they don't do the touring tires anymore just made the sport touring ones capable for bout rather than touring sport and super sport even the super sports which are the ones i always run a great in all weather have even rode in the heavy snow on them and they didn't spin not even a little only tires i will ever run on my bikes put it that way.

It's the same company now. Merged. Tyres look and feel the same, but I bought Pirellis, because of the cool diablo trident. :)
