front discs
« on: 12 May 2012, 11:46:21 pm »
anybody know if a bit of pitting in front discs will affect mot? just overhauled front calipers today and noticed pitting in a few places mainly on inside of disks! no scoring  or warping tho!!

Hard to give a definitive answer without seeing them, but it probably won't be a problem.
So long as the discs aren't developing deep grooves, worn to the thickness limit or warped (which would be obvious at the lever as a loss of braking effectiveness), a few rust pits won't concern the tester.

"hardly any ware on discs its only done 6500miles cant understand why they started pitting?" - quite possibly started pitting / rusting through lack of use (the more use they get the "cleaner" they tend to stay).

The brakes get checked on a roller (function tested to make sure they work), as long as the brake discs aren't obviously damaged (warping / cracking / heavy scoring etc), they'll be fine.

yes! i know what ure saying adieR But it must be also down to the grade of stainless the nips use? because i have a 1977 norton commando interstate 850 in storage! and thats been off road for 17yrs and the discs on that are realy good !! no sign of pitting whatsoever? and the mileage on that is only 13000!!

Pitting's not a problem, slam the brakes on, you'll still stop!!!
Why they're pitting, i can only guess the bike's being left out in bad weather?

Pitting will mean a MOT failure the tricky bit is how much is too much, some pitting can be picked up on the latest brake testing machines and shows up as a warped disc!

As with most things MOT it's up to the discretion of the tester, if they want to screw you for some work they could well fail it/them in the hope you will get them to fix it and they earn out of it.  >:

thanks for that gnasher! cheered me up no end! :'( the pitting on one disc is only visible on the inside" covering a area of about 1 inch, on the opposite disc its just odd specs here and ther!!! no judder at all from front braking gently or heavy? no signs of any on rear either!!
