gearbox drive shaft HELP

HELP, Has anyone changed the drive shaft on a FZ6 (05) its the one the front sprocket is fixed to or in my case not fixed to, see my other thread "cost of spares".

What I need to know is does the engine have to come out? are special tools required? can the average person do the job and has anyone got a spare shaft going cheap.

What are your thoughts on welding the sprocket (nut) on till next winter/ new chain. which ever comes first?

But yes, engine needs to come out and I'd describe it as "above average" in terms of DIY difficulty.
Welding the nut should be fine. I did that on my FZS600, even changed C&S by cutting the old nut off with an angle grinder.

That article is in reference to the OLD FZS600 and NOT the later FZ6 which the OP has.

thanks for the advice, think I'm going for the weld it on method.

Have ordered new chain and sprockets so should be ok for 20 to 30 thou. miles thats 4 to 6 more years.

left the tab washer off put new sprocket on just enough thread to nip it up then mig welded nut to shaft, new chain and rear sprocket, that should do for a few more years?

Should be fine so long as the sprocket has no axial play.
