Just tried to renew my car tax online , when I got to the pay section , I had the following message unable to verify payment due to technical issue , please phone number shown to speak to advisor to confirm payment , just done that but they say they cant send an email to confirm payment , and if there is a problem use the reference number shown on reminder if it doesn't arrive in a few days - here's hoping it doesn't go tits up .

I would be a bit dubious of phoning someone to give my credit card details, have heard of scammers cloning sites and doing something like this, when you phone they get yer credit card details and steal yer hard earned. Hope it turns out ok for you.

Sounds very dodgy that. You sure it was the proper DVLA website ?
I've seen something recently about some sites that are set up to look almost exactly like the official ones, but are run by scammers.

Oops , i'm usually on the ball with that sort of thing , just typed in the web address as shown on the reminder , and it says a successful application has already been made , and the phone number I dialled is the one shown on the reminder , so hopefully I haven't been scammed .

Always, always only ever use a site that starts with www.gov.uk (http://www.gov.uk)
