Wanted: Rear shock for FZ1
« on: 27 May 2023, 06:28:31 pm »
So after having not ridden the bike for a while I had forgotten how close to worn out the rear shock was. Despite Gnasher tweaking it, the lower speed comp/reb daning is not cutting it.

So am after a stock shock that I can get rebuilt or a aftermarket one that isnt worn out.

ta.

Mate from memory (it was couple years ago now) you was right at the limit of the spring.  The damping wasn't too bad but was struggling to control the maxed out spring.  You could try just a replacement spring which is matched to you.

Obviously the best option is a new shock and/or a rebuildable replacement, that said by the time it's been rebuilt and re-sprung you might not be that far off the cost of new.  What's your budget?

Ah yes I forgot about the spring, vertain the cheapest option. I dont suppose you know what the stock spring weight/rate is and what i would upgrade too..?

Its a £3-4k bike so dont want to be spending mutliple hundreds of pounds on a replacement shock, so best bang for buck would be preferable.

The spring is determined by your weight in your commonly worn kit and that of a pillion, etc.  Take a look at Hagon, they've really up'd their game in recent years. Fully rebuildable remote adjustable preload around £650.  They're not to Nitron's standard but way better than OE and they come with the correct spring.

What about YSS @£350?

I put a YSS rear shock on my FZ6 which was an improvement on the OEM one and good enough for the riding I do.

Frankly, unless you're doing track days etc, I don't think you need to spend more for Hagon/ Nitron etc.

Hagon used to build shocks to order they don't list mono shocks by bike application, just type and price.   I'd be surprised if they wouldn't do one for an FZ1, give them a call.

YSS I wouldn't touch them heard too any stories of quality issues and failures at low mileage. Possible these have been sorted but its cheap for a reason.

thanks chaps, will drop Hagon an email, but checking the priced its £391 for std chack with them, thats only £60 cheaper than a Nitron.

might look at the getting a stock shock rebuilt w/stiffer spring and see what the cost of that is.
