General / Drillers funeral today
« on: 23 January 2014, 05:26:21 pm »
Hi all
Just got back from drillers funeral. Lashed it down all the way to his house ( 75 miles), mini feat of endurance. GS was well up to it though , this is its element. The house was full of family and friends, he knew a lot of folk along his life. Met his son alexander, over from the states, a tall spitting image of John for sure. 5 bikes came, including myself, matty , jase, debs and steve pring , one of the longest serving fazer owner. He travelled from Tunbridge Wells. Amazing .
The service was preceeded by us revving our bikes up while the hearse slowly moved past ,a fitting tribute to John on his final journey. The service itself was very personal, and very moving. We all struggled to stop the eyes leaking I can tell you. We learned so much about John from the eulogy , like he was European Hang gliding champion , before he got into bikes in a big way.It was one of the most apt funeral services I have ever seen, and whilst we all were so sad at his passing , it was very fitting.
The wake was held at the house, and John had always complained about " funeral food"...so we had a pig roast ! Fantastic food, best wishes to the family for their incredible hospitality.A dear friend , he will always be remembered . RIP

well I suppose it had to happen at some point !...but my faithful fazer has developed a fault after 5 yrs and 30k miles of my ownership. The first one mind.
Basically I just noticed a blub blub blub type noise up to 3k rpm at small throttle openings. Like  a misfire but no backfires, so it seems like a fuelling issue to me. Once over 3k rpm the bike runs fine, and mpg seems Ok too. So I dont think its  a main jet issue. I suspect a blocked pilot jet in one carb. Never having touched the carbs I am hesitant to mess about. But does anyone know how easy it is to remove the jets to clean ? I suspect Mike will know in a flash. Is this something I should contemplate doing myself or best to book in to a dealer ??

I hope its nothing more serious than this.

General / Dremel recomendations ?
« on: 24 August 2012, 07:45:34 am »
I am thinking of getting a dremel multi tool, primarily to experiment with cutting some screens to size...has anyone tried the cheaper alternatives from the likes of silverline etc...or is it best to stick to dremel ?
I ask since I have existed without a dremel for the whole of my life up to now, so may not use it much in future....but do want a tool which does the job.

an astonishing piece of news given how much progress has been made this season...BMW only going to race as Motorrad Italia, with just 2 riders.

does this mean bmw are cash strapped ?...or are they planning a foray into motoGP?

maybe GS sales have dropped !...and economies have to be made...blame Triumph !!      ;)

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / K TECH shock - SHOCK !
« on: 23 April 2012, 07:04:27 am »
I still cant quite believe this has happened, especially after all my glowing tributes to K Tech.....but the shock which was refurbished in march has failed !  :eek ...after just 3 hours on the road!
I only had the bike back together late  last sunday , didnt want to try it in the  evening rain, so only rode it first time on saturday, a quick 50 mile run, albeit at road legal pace , where it felt fine if a tad firm...now the rebound damping has gone, oil is leaking from the shock, and it makes a funny sheeshing noise when the back of the bike is bounced. The bike just bounces straight back up, not retardation at all of the movement... I still am gobsmacked at this.
You know I am even now suspicious if my forks have had the full treatment too. I was a bit unhappy at how firm they were yesterday, kicking off bumps, pretty much how they felt before the work....I backed off all damping , to see how the forks feel  , but the forks dont compress and rebound very fast at all...so much so I now wonder if they are still full of old oil !! Just how do I check if it has been done ?....at the moment I feel like insisting they open up the forks so I can see the oil is fresh ...at least that will prove somethinghas been done.
The real pisser is the time I have wasted stripping out the bike, taking the units to Ktech etc...at the moment , all for nothing. Luckily I have a spare OE ( refurbished ) shock which I can put on to keep the bike on the road, but I feel totally pissed orf !

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Front sprocket
« on: 28 March 2012, 08:04:04 am »
As part of my ongoing refresh of my gen1, I am replacing the chain and sprockets. Its actually the first time I have had the sprocket cover off since buyingthe bike in 08 and was expecting some force to remove the sprocket nut , but it was almost loose ! The copper tab washer was in place, and the nut  came off very easily.I was quite surprised to see a lot of wear from the sprocket , as the rear is almost like new ( 37 k miles !)...but the front is u/s...and the teeth very thin indeed, and visibly hooked .The chain itself is not totally worn out , but it was a bit of a shock to see how bad the sprocket was. Food for thought as if it had got any worse, possibly  the chain could have jammed, should one or more teeth collapse.... :eek

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / plastic repair to hugger ?
« on: 13 March 2012, 06:49:14 am »
my plastic hugger  has cracked around two mounting points. One bit ha scome off, the other about to do so... I reckon its either fatigue cracks or my dealer overtightened the mounting nuts last year after replacing my rear brake hose , as its only after then that  the cracks appeared ...but how do I prove such ?

Its an ermax hugger, color coded, so I was wondering if there is anything which would glue the bits back on.? A new one is at least £80 + painting...

The pieces are not small, about 30mm across, so I can get a decent amount of glue onto them.

any ideas ?

cheers

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Suspension overhaul
« on: 23 February 2012, 07:29:52 am »
I have just been talking to K tech about servicing  my suspension. My K tech forks are 4 yrs old now, and the " full monty " shock 2 years old. Just lately I reckon its lost a bit of lustre, suppleness has diminished etc and the rebound adjuster on the shock wont turn properly.Being a fazer the bike still runs fine, handle sgood etc, just dont have the subtleness in damping  which I used to notice..... So its time they had some TLC.... They have quoted £100 to service the forks, and £80 the shock. Thats a full strip , rebuild , regas/oil. It will be interesting to see if there is this cartridge tube wear which maxton talk about...
It will take 3 weeks( thats their turn around time currently) , so I cant give  a quick resume of what the difference will be.
