MS outlook question?
« on: 25 July 2013, 11:13:20 am »
I used Hotmail for years with no problems. They are now apparently OUTLOOK and I wonder if any of you techy types can answer a question.

Being a canny pensioner (aka tight) I use my phone's 1GB allowance to link to my laptop.
However, whenever I log into Outlook it seems to just keep on gobbling up MBs. Almost all my daily meagre allowance.

Is there some secret setting I need to check/uncheck to stop it downloading the equivalent of the Bodleian library at each visit ???

........................... and NO, its not my porn filter struggling with the overload!!

I used to not give a foc, then I discovered Red Bull and now I don't give a flying foc !!!

I'd have thought ADSL & wireless would be the canny thing to do  ?  Home broadband is a lot cheaper than a mobile tether.

You can install an adblocker and/or in Chrome you can right click, inspect element and then look at Network to see what the network utilisation damage was and what caused it.

For example this page  was 20.2KB and loaded in 656ms. with the main elements being quote.gif taking 328ms and the initial response from the page load of 229ms.

The Fuelly link in my sig takes 488ms to load which probably indicates I should remove it ;)

There are no settings you can configure in outlook web/live mail that I can see that will improve your situation.

The instant messaging feature seems like it takes up quite a lot of data and refreshes on an ongoing basis.

My suggestion is to drop it an move to gmail or some other provider.

You can enable email forwarding and forward all the outlook mail to your new address until you've migrated all your accounts.

Instead of using the webmail client try using the office outlook. That way you could run it offline and only connect when you sync.

you should have a setting to download only headers. This basically downloads the subject line to your phone and if it interests you, you can select that and download the contents of the message. should reduce the amount of information exchanged.

The big difference is that using Hotmail your messages stay on the Hotmail server, you simply view them on there.  Outlook downloads the messages off the server onto your computer so if you've been sent an HTML email with lots of pictures (which many will be) then it will gobble up your data allowance.

Home broadband would definitely be the way to go rather than tethering your phone, a hell of a lot faster too (unless you have 4G).

you could setup windows live mail on your PC. this will get all your emails from outlook (and any of your other email accounts) without all the graphical garbage bogging up your data allowance ;)

Thanx for the info and just to expand...............

I had NTL/Virgin broadband/landline/TV for many years but the price kept creeping up and I was using it less and less.

Gave them the chop and saved £25/mth.

Now have a deal with Vodafone for £13/mth incl. 1GB which is generally more than enough.

I notice BB is getting cheaper but I would still need a landline and that is about £15/mth plus initial install?

yes. Unless you go for fibre or cable broadband you would need a phone line. Even some of the fibre/cable suppliers insist on the phone line even though it isn't used for broadband.

Some like talk talk give you free broadband if you take the phone line from them.

That may be yer problem Del. Emails won't take much from your 1GB allowance, but windows updates, porn etc. will. I don't think emails are yer problem here.

What version of Windows do you have ?

Windows 7 has an excellent resource meter which will tell you the connections to the internet from your machine and the data being used across it.
