« on: 19 December 2014, 11:42:04 am »
Thanks for the replies guys. So I can add a bit more info..

I did the test moving the handlebars from left to right - smooth as a babies back side! One finger from left to right with zero distortion.

Tyres - I have a set of Pilot Road 3's on the bike since May 2013, around about 4,500 miles done on them.

Forks - my dust seals are looking quite worn, it's a job on the to-do list but there is no leakage so it's on the long finger.

Weight - well I weigh about 110kg and I've a large givi top box on it (52L I think) that usually has a gym bag and waterproofs stuffed in it.

I don't usually take my hands off the bars but I was just wondering if this was going to be the start of a bigger problem.

Yesterday morning I discovered a wobble in the handlebars. I was coming up to a red light and coming to a stop but for some reason took both my hands off the bars and sat back. When the wobble came into the bars I grabbed them again and let out an almighty ripper  :lol

So I replicated it after the lights. Took my hands off the bars and sure enough after 2-3 seconds and good amount of wobble in the bars.

Everything I've read would seem to indicate steering head bearings?

Are they a pig of a job to do? Is it DIY'able? I got a quote of €150 for top & bottom bearings but for a pair of uprated bearings with 3 year guarantee from a friend of a friend who has a shop.

What would I need to give this a bash myself or could there be any other cuplrit to that kind of wobble? Thanks

I've the same rack on my foxeye, would recommend it for sure!

The relay I had the problem with was just behind the clocks, remove the windshield and you have full access.

Just to note these are the exact same symptoms I had with mine - fox eye and all to boot.

I have a hat here and if your problem isn't fixed by replacing the relay I will eat it.

I use an app (android) called Fuelio. Been using it religiously since I bought the fazer tracking both fuel and other expenses such as parts and tyres. Find it provides very useful information at a glance.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kajda.fuelio&hl=en

That is just some of the fuel stats, there's another 3 sections above it with more details. And then if you have been entering other costs like I have there is a seperate section for that.

It's handy, I take out my phone after I pay for the petrol and put in the details before I leave the station. No websites to be going to, no spreadsheets to be updating. You can even let it track where you get the fuel by GPS or add notes to the fill up so you know what stations are putting out piss for petrol. Get significantly worse fuel economy from one particular station? Don't go back!

edit: I've not been on the bike since May practically due to a broken finger so those stats are from Jan-May, and yes I only use about €40 petrol a month.

Check back through my posts for the thread posi, I had it up a while ago.

My problem - which had the exact same symptoms as you - was down to a faulty relay. If you want I can try meet up with you so you can plug mine into yours and see if it fixes it for you (i'm almost 100% positive it would)

I got a replacement relay from City Spares for a tenner I think it was, not the exact same relay but one that did the job.

Sorry the picture is so big - has anyone painted/polished the torque bar on the swing arm and how did it turn out?

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Clutch question
« on: 21 August 2014, 04:24:39 pm »
Unbeknownst to me the easy pull had arrived in the post yesterday and was sitting in my post box all day while I fidgeted about lubing up my clutch cable. (I'm an idiot!)

Good news first: after lubing and adjusting cable yesterday I took it for a short spin. Felt good to be back on it but I reckon a lot of my gear changes on the road were clutchless, which is ok because I could manage it at lights stopping and taking off and that was my bigger worry.

Bad news was when trying to fit the easy pull this morning my helpful neighbour decided he would give me a hand and ended up breaking one of the cables provided with it (it comes with 2, one shorter, one longer) so I had to use the shorter.

Long story short I couldn't get it to work. Here's a picture: https://www.dropbox.com/s/yaffhukiiscch8s/20140821_105547.jpg

So my clutch cable sits in the top slot and the cable from the easy pull sits beneath it and attaches to the clutch lever. Could get that far but.. there is no resistance on my own clutch cable housing to actually pull the cable and operate the clutch. I played around with it for a while and couldn't get it to work properly at all so I've left it for now - possibly for good.

I reckon a trip to local bike shop tomorrow pick up some gt85 grease in a can and have a look at behind the sprocket cover is my next step.

I gave the cable a good lube there with some 3 in 1 spray (all I had to hand) and have it adjusted, it's definitely a little better.

I'll have to get some proper grease for the bearings behind the sprocket cover before I got at that - what would you recommend?

I know your pain darrsi, i've been off work since the 1st of June and we've been having some spells of fantastic weather which I enjoyed indoors with a sweaty ass arm in a stupid ass cast with pins sticking out of my finger.!

I've had my fazer about 17 months now, only really done about 4k miles on it but I have no real idea of the history of it before I bought it so i'm not sure if/when the clutch cable was last changed/lubed! (I haven't lubed it during my ownership but i'll change that tomorrow)

FZS600 Fazer / Clutch question
« on: 19 August 2014, 05:01:08 pm »
So i've been unlucky this summer. I filled my tank on the 29th of May and it's still full. Did this to my finger on the 1st of June and needed surgery on it, then just after I got the cast off and pins removed from my hand I get landed in hospital with a kidney stone which required more surgery!  :'(

I've been out of a cast since 11th July and even with all the physio and rehab, my hand still isn't back to where I need it to be to use the bike properly - I can barely pull in my clutch. (Did I mention i'm only in my late 20's  :lol )

I ordered this part 2 weeks ago but apparently it's on a slow boat from the US and god knows when it will arrive.

My clutch is quite stiff, I sat on a friends dragstar 650 2 weeks ago and found his a lot easier to pull in and engage.

I'm hoping the easy pull system will change the feel of it completely but in the mean time until that arrives would fitting a new clutch cable and housing make it any less stiff to pull? Might be a stupid question but sure it doesn't hurt to ask! I'm also thinking of putting on a shorter lever so I only have to use my index and middle finger to pull it and avoid the broken piece of crap ring finger, does that make sense?

Thanks!

Nevermind! I see in his ad for breaking the whole bike you have agreed to buy this from him!  :lol

FZS600 Fazer / Re: video of chain jump please help diagnose
« on: 21 July 2014, 01:17:58 pm »
I assumed it was normal with mine but nice to get confirmation. Might sound silly but if I'm leaving it run a little like that (supervised of course), when I'm applying chain lube for instance will it cause any damage? I normally apply a small amount of revs and it's gone anyway.

Don't get into that habit. Do it by hand. Get used to doing it by hand. A moving chain catching some loose clothing or loose body parts can end in catastrophe. Just don't do it.

Posi, i'm in Lucan and have the same bike, most tools needed, a haynes manual, a small bit of experience working on my bike, plenty of patience, and as of right now a broken finger that won't heal right.

I'm out of work for the next few weeks (and the past seven  :eek ) - you are more than welcome to drop over and I can provide another pair of hands & eyes and help out if I can!

I would also recommend avoiding the SSD and just getting a good old regular Hard Drive.

Both is better  :D

Really though. I bought a 64gb SSD about a year or so ago and just installed Windows on it. I then had a regular 1TB hard drive for storage. Which i've managed to fill so put in another 1TB last week. The great part about it is having Windows on the SSD means everything is super quick from booting up to browsing forums.

If I had to recommend just one computer upgrade to anyone, a SSD would be it. The prices are becoming more reasonable by the day, there is no reason not to buy one. In terms of value the performance boost per £ is unrivalled.

I know it's not quite what you asked but..

I have to recommend a desktop. You can get a very good Intel i5 processor, 8gb+ of ram, a large solid state hard drive + a huge regular hard drive for storage, official copy of windows and all the bells & whistles for between £5-600. Sure it's not portable but the performance won't be beaten, particularly with a SSD for your operating system and most used software. You then have the added bonus of being able to upgrade individual parts in 12-24 months to make it more modern and last longer.

You can spec this up like so

This is a monster of a computer, will do all you ask of it and more. Down the line you could add a graphics card or more ram to make it even better.

I might jump on board and ask a question in here if you don't mind?

I'm thinking of replacing the standard indicator's also - any recommendations? I'd like something smaller that look better and possibly have a good quality LED light source. Ebay can be hit and miss so looking for someone who has gone before me  :lol

I bought the boots for my daily commute, they're fine. A little extra protection around the ankle and toes nothing major - they were €40 over here not sure how much £ but for commuting they are doing me fine. They're sold as touring boots so they're pretty tall. Haven't been in torrential rain yet but has held up in heavy showers.

I've this Shark Vision R from Helmet City, great vision out of it, much better than a cheapo Ducchini I had starting off in.

This is my second Vision R actually because I managed to come off my first bike in the first Vision R the second time I wore it... and it worked so I bought another  :lol

Not sure i'd buy something like this without first seeing sample clips of the quality and/or reading a few reviews.

Here's one I bought for the same price, http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,12091.0.html

Like someone said above, I've bought a cheap one to see how much I use it and to see if an investment in a top end gopro is worthwhile for me.
