Get an Optimate 4, there is no substitute plain and simple. It'll do everything you need, is durable and well built and will condition / recover most batteries unless they're completely shagged

IIRC it'll do small car batteries but for high ampage big car batteries it might struggle to fully recharge a dead one. Worth checking that.

Visordown recently did a review of 7 different battery chargers here...

Optimate are crap I have 2 over the years first one optimate 3 that keep charger the batteries dry so got the optimate 4 and yes did the same again I went and saw a battery expert and he told me he was getting people coming in saying that they battery don't keep the charger any more  went they use so call chargers and he told me and other people who come to his shop is get good changer. Give it full changer take it off  your bike bring it indoor if it cold out side and you can leave for good 3 months and it should  be fine to start your bike  I been doing this for last few years and been fine saving me buying a new battery ever year  :eek

Sounds like you've had a bad experience but wouldn't say Optimate are crap as you're the first negative comment i've heard in a general flood of only good stuff and recommendations so something individual happened with you I reckon?

New update
Today I have just got a yamaha branded one YEC-40 make by ctec 3 years grntee will also charge car batterys £65. There is another one at £45 with lower spec and not charge cars.
I just wanted it today so could not wait for ebay otherwise it would of been an optimate 4 at around £45.
MCA (leicester) had one but wanted £60 + I gota pay to park.
Progress report in my "wont start thread"

Check out ctek. They do a whole range.

Mine is an older model than the current range but has performed faultlessly on car and bike. Much superior to the Oxford/Optimate types I've had previously.
