Title: Tyre mileages
Post by: robby boy on 28 February 2013, 12:23:27 am
SWMBO has just announced that there is sufficient funds in the piggy bank for a nice set of rubber for the new season, the bike is currently sitting on Bridgestone BT21's which were on it when I got it approx 6000 miles, I only use the bike for pleasurable weekend runs with some spirited runs through the twisties, cutting to the chase what kind of tyres are you guys running and what kind of miles are you getting out of them.

Mine is currently on BT020's (nearly new when I bought it last year), back is squared off with just over 2k (mostly motorway) miles. Due in for MoT shortly so it's getting a Conti Road Attack 2 on the back.

I got 9,000 out of a Bridgestone 023 rear (mostly pleasure riding through the twisties) before it needed replacing. The front is still going strong at about 11,000.

6000 is very good mileage from any rear tyre, I found a BT 21 very noisy on my 600, I wore it out later on my thou where it was quiet, weird or what?
Inlaw and myself changed to avon storms ,they are good but I would not expect 6000 miles with them

Thanks Bwizz, was looking at changing to Michelins don't know whether to go for pilot power ct2 or pilot road ct2, don't really like the feel of the BT21s as they have never really filled me with any confidence.

I got about 4k on 020s (rear) gone onto maxxis but not worn out yet due to weather, seem to grip ok and a lot cheaper £185 instead of £250 a pair, so if I get 4k out of them I'll be happy.

update august 3rd, done over 5,000 miles now, the rear is ready for changing but can't complain about the handling, better than the 020s

Singapore being a tropical country, I guess tyres wear faster. Bridgestone BT023 180/55 10 months, 21000 km. BT023 120/70, 13 months, 26500 km.

You guys must be riding hard to wear tyres out in 3-5k miles, because as a mostly-motoway-commuter here in Ireland, I got 12k miles from a BT023 rear and BT021 front tyre combo - and I am nearly 15 stones / 90kg+.

I got 12.5k out of my rear PR2 before it needed replacing due to a puncture  :'(   Had 17k out of the front one, but that's not far off needing a replacement now.  Mostly riding in a straight line up and down the A12.

£'s per mile pr3’s are not expensive at all, minimum 15000 out of the rear

And good enough for the barons cbr1000rr on track plus 12500 miles!

A follow up to this: Just replaced the Bridgestone 023 Front at about 12,500 miles. It probably would have lasted longer, but after doing a IAM Skills Day at Thruxton the right hand side tread had pretty vanished :D

average for both tyres =24,000 km = 15,000 miles , tyres wear out faster in a tropical country??? I think you have done really well

Got 6k - 7k out of a Maxxis Supermaxx rear tyre. Going on to Michelin PR3s when the rear gives up the ghost, it's not enough for my taste.

My Fz1 ate a rear pr3 in a couple of thousand miles, I was in shock to see it wear away so quick! The front is still on after about 4k and still going strong.

I know different bike but I had a Z1000SX until a few weeks ago, I never had them (PR3's) but mates did and they say never again, like me on that bike I ran with the older PR 2 fantastic tyre IMHO.

Went for Michelin PR2 in the end, had them fitted and the bike moted at the same time £235 all in (ride in ride out) only done 40 miles on them, bike feels planted but could not help notice the tyres were quite noisy, then again I was not wearing my earplugs, hope to get out for a spin tomorrow weather permitting.

I have Michelin Pilot Road on mine. They were cheap £150 the pair and the paten give a more secure feeling in the UK weather, especially when riding year round for a 40 mile commute. I have done 15200 miles so far and the rear is at have now reached the point of failing the MOT the front is half way there, bit squared but the last moth started sliding a lot.

Check out www.visorshop.com (http://www.visorshop.com) site should lead you to Crossans based in Newry co Down Northern Ireland. They have to be one of the cheapest suppliers on the web and there prices include delivery to main land UK.
I have had two sets of PR2's from them and even though it cost me £30 for fitting and balancing elsewhere I still saved money.
I have nothing to do with this company just giving them a plug as they are excellent..

I just bought Pirelli Angel GT. I don't need to change tyres pressure for riding with passenger. Just one set up. If you ride with passenger they are higly recommnended. Do not buy old model tyres like BT 20 or 21. Compare to latest models they are rubish.

One of the problems with a forum discussion is that you have no idea whether or not the people posting know what they're talking about. Because they all pronounce their opinions as fact we assume they do know what they're talkng about when as often as not they don't. A classic example is the last post declaring BT012s are rubbish compared to the latest tyres. What a load of old toot. In reality there are very few bad tyres out there (again, I might be talking twaddle like so many others) and some of the older models represent a real bargain simply because they are no longer in fashion. One generation out of style tyres were the dogs danglies only a couple of years ago. Top class riders like journalists and test riders thought they were brilliant so they haven't suddenly become rubbish. If you are that good a rider that you can actually make use of the difference between most modern tyres then you're a riding god and should be working for Michelin or Dunlop. The tyre that suits you best is the one you like the feel of and that meets your requirements with regard to the life/grip trade off. If you want to do high miles buy accordingly, if you want sticky grip and don't care about the cost, choose a sporty tyre, but take what people tell you about the tyre they use being the one and only with a pinch of salt!!!

Just realised I have not added to this post since fitting the pr2's. done about 1500 miles on them, (mostly Sunday run outs(blasts)). So far very pleased with them, bike now off the road for some TLC, paint touch up rear swing arm grease, service etc, can't wait for Springtime to come round to get some more mileage on bike and see how they do.
