Struggling to start/cutting out when warm
« on: 20 December 2016, 06:51:29 am »
Hi all. I have a 1998 Fazer which I have owned since 2012. It's a weekend pleasure bike with only 37K on the clock and looked after.

I took her out this weekend, started with no issues and ran as she always does however after about 30 minutes of riding it felt as if she was bogging down and juddering at low speed/revs.

I managed to get home and turned the engine off but when I came back to the bike to restart and move it into the garage it just struggled like nobodies business. It was as if it was fuel starved cranking over, ticking at very low revs before cuttting out quickly.

About 12-18 months ago I had the fuel tank repaired because of a mystery leak that occurred after it had been in a local garage for MOT/service and seals.

Could this be a potential breather pipe issue or does it sound more complicated?

Thanks

The easiest way to check if it's the kinked breather pipe problem is to try and open the petrol cap when the problem occurs.  If it is the blocked pipe the cap will be hard to open and when it does open there will be a big rush of air into the tank.

How was the tank repaired?  It could be dirt from the tank repair blocking fuel filter or getting past filter and blocking jets in carbs.

Is the fuel pump making the usual couple of seconds of clicks when the ignition turned on?

Hi,

Yes the fuel pump makes the clicks when the ignition is turned on.

Yesterday I opened the fuel filler cap and got a massive rush of air outwards. As for the tank repair, I am not entirely sure. I left the bike with the garage for about 5 days where they stripped the tank off and repaired it.

Massive rush of air would have been inwards.

Your breather pipes are blocked or kinked meaning the tank becomes a vacuum resulting in zero fuel flow and the bike cutting out.

Make sure that you give the black pipes 3 iirc underneath the bike by the exhaust/center stand a good tug down whenever you remove or lift the tank or you risk getting a face full of fuel when you next undo the tank cap as pipes can get kinked.

Cheers. I will have a look over the weekend and see if I can lift the tank and refit it.
