Every 6000 miles. (6k minor & 12k major). Yamaha also "recommend" a fluid change every 2 years (brake & coolant) if not covered on the normal service.

Over the years I have often had this kind of premonition which has saved me.........

Every single day on my commute to work  :rolleyes

General / Re: hotgrips problem
« on: 09 September 2012, 11:24:32 pm »
Had this problem loads of times with Oxford grips, especially when wired up via the loom or into an ignition live.
I contact Oxford a few years ago and they said that their grips are designed to run directly via the battery and not into the bikes electrics.
Since then I have always wired them up this way without a problem. Do need to give it some revs though  ;)

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: alarm removal
« on: 06 September 2012, 07:20:46 pm »
2 of my previous Gen 1's had Meta 357 alarms fitted (factory fit). When I look at it myself all the wires were the same bloody colour. Asked my Yam dealer about removing and they advised a new loom was required at £400....yeah right!!!
Took it to my local independant dealer who had it removed in 1/2 hour costing me a grant total of 20 quid ;) . Funnily enough my second one went to the same place.
There are mobile alarm removal companies that specialise in this type of thing if you do a search on the net.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: BT023 Vs PR3
« on: 02 September 2012, 06:35:41 pm »
I've had BT020, 021, 022 and 023. I've also had PR2's and PR3's. Now I've got Metzeler Z4's.

All of these were chosen for longevity and wet-weather grip. THAT's what they're good at! According to your post, you're not interested in either, so these are not the tyres for you. Look at Michelin Pilot Powers or Pirelli Diabli Rosso, etc, etc.
Agree with MadDog on this. I have used all of the above Bridgetone tyres and, although grip is great, I find the 023's the worst of the Bridgstone range so far. Also had a set of PR2's but for some reason did get on well with them. Took me ages to scrub them in aswell.
I currently have Michelin Pilot Powers on my Gen 2 FZ1 and they grip very well in the dry but do not seem as good in the wet. Also a much steeper profile than the touring tyres mentioned so the bike tips into corners faster than I'm used too  :\

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Gen 2 - TPS Setting/Adjustment
« on: 02 September 2012, 06:28:17 pm »
Following a recent post about a really snatchy throttle response on my '10 Plate Gen 2 my local dealer suggested it could be the TPS.
Looking online the comments are that the closed TPS setting should be between 15-18. I stuck the bike into diagnostic mode and mine is sitting at 16.
Is this ok?
Seems to be within tolerances but should it not be higher?

« on: 01 September 2012, 11:45:23 am »
Great suggestions on bikes. Never had a BMW or Suzuki before. Really fancy a BMW Rockster (weird I know) but not many of them around with lower miles at right price).
I have always avoided Suzuki's as I have a few mates with different models and, although they like their bikes the build quality is just not up to scratch.  Seen 2 ZRX's which are right price and condition but just too far away.
Interesting comments about build quality though. I have had 5 x Fazer 1000's and have never had any problems/isses with any of them. They worked great through winters and stood up really well to the salt. Ran my CB1300 for 3 years and it was a nightmare. Forks and shocks corroded. Casing corroded all within the first month. Brakes needed stripped every 2 weeks during the winter or they siezed.
Interesting thing about Honda was they used to manufactor all of their own parts. In 2003 they subcontracted to a Chinese company and ironically this is when their quality issues started. All for saving a few quid!!
Savings are not passed onto us though

To add to the CBF1000 saga my father-in-laws 12 plate with 3000 miles on the clock is with the dealer and has been for over a week. it conked out while he was riding and wouldn't start again. last time i spoke to him they had replaced the ignition coil and this has not fixed it... in short they do not know what is wrong lol.
How about a V-strom 1000 or a TDM900?
Pretty much my experience with Honda UK and my CB1300. Great bike let down by poor build quality and really poor Honda service. Parts were exceptionally expensive with David Silvers seeming to hold a tight grip on spares and you pay a premium for them.
Never fancied a Suzuki as their reputation for falling to bits at the first sign of moisture put me off  :)
Have been looking at the ZRX1200s but all the good ones are too far from me. Had a ZRX1200R briefly but sold it after 8 weeks for a Gen 1 funnily enough as the Yam was by far a better bike.

How about a Hyosung. Great bikes. Reliable, immense build quality, great electrics, fast, comfy, look the shizzle, 2 up touring a breeze, great warranty, amazing dealer back up.
Don't they also make blenders or something  :D
My criteria is 1000cc (ish) with fairing, low(ish) miles, and easy(ish) to work on for 3k  ;)

General / CBF1000 - WTF
« on: 30 August 2012, 07:34:53 pm »
Decided to get myself another "general bike" for all round bad weather and commuting. Trying to keep the Gen2 for nice weather. Didn't want another Gen 1 as I've had 3 of them so "done that".  :)
So I thought I would have a look at the CBF1000 since there is one going cheap near me and they get good reviews.
Having owned a CB1300 previously I have first hand experience that Honda UK are a pile of cack and build quality on bikes is lacking I thought I would do some research. With this in mind I visited the CBF1000 Forum.  :rolleyes
WTF........ why would anyone buy a Honda. Build quality issues, duff batteries, duff stators, wobble issues that dealers cannot fix, vibration issues that dealers cannot fix, having to take off the fairing to replace a bulb.....the list goes on.
Now the Yam's are by no means perfect in any way but the the issues listed on this Forum pale into insignificance compared to the issues with the CBF.
So stuff the idea of getting a CBF....I'm sticking with Yamaha and now going to look for a cheap Gen 1  ;)

For Sale & Wanted / Re: 4year old S2 Fazer for sale
« on: 14 August 2012, 05:32:59 pm »
Hi, I'm looking to generate some interest in my 4 year old Fazer S2..........I need rid of her......................Clean bike never dropped, only light scratches in places.......... Pictures are available. Bike is in North Yorkshire, I'm not. Reasonable offers considered.

If you had read some of the previous posts in the For Sale section you may have noticed the scathing comments some members make to those who come onto this Forum just to sell stuff. This tends to be a social forum and is not an extention of Ebay.
Generally a little post in the Introduction section, introducing yourself would not have gone a-miss.
In addition you are not exactly "selling" your bike very well based on your comments so posting pictures would help.
Don't leave us guessing about price and location either (why is the bike in one location and you are not?)......tell us where you are and how much you want otherwise you will get appropriate comments/offers.  :rolleyes

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Where's the best deal for a battery !
« on: 12 August 2012, 12:20:06 pm »
I agree go for YUASA if you can (IMO anyway). i have been through umpteen batteries and this brand seems to last longest.
MDS seen ok and they have an Ebay shop with the batteries at a lower price : http://compare.ebay.co.uk/like/300683821608?var=lv&ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar&cbt=y
I actually bought my last battery for my Gen 2 from Tippets Honda as they were 1/2 the price of anyone else. Great service too.
Worth giving them a call to see if they have your specific model (Tel: 0208 399 7449)

General / Re: Bike Sale... So What Am I Doing Wrong?
« on: 05 August 2012, 10:44:57 pm »
Most of the feedback given here is great, especially from pickle about the ad itself.
I generally change my bikes every year and it is becoming more difficult to sell each year. Your bike has to stand out somehow and ultimately in an Ad this means price. Pitch your price based on similar bikes in your "local" area and your target audience. Local area to me normally means 100 mile radius.
Is £2400 a fair price for your bike.........yes. Will you get it....doubt it.
I have just missed out 2 Gen 1's, both with under 14k miles (04 and 05 models) and both were under £2200.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: I think its time to sell
« on: 01 August 2012, 08:11:24 pm »
Agree with Falcon on this. Review what you want before you consider selling as you may regret it later.
Your bike looks really nice but you have to sell at what people are prepared by buy. This will depend upon your location and other bikes for sale at that time.
An '05 with 15K miles "should" be worth £3k+ privately but there are some advertised for much less at the moment (£2500 ish). As a CAT C you will have to reduce your price considerably and IMO by £500+. With this in mind it may be worth reviewing whether you want to sell

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Annoyingly Poor Fueling/Ride
« on: 28 July 2012, 07:17:33 pm »
Just spoken to my local Yam dealer describing the problem who said....."its not the throttle bodies or the ECU...somethings broken........".
Not very useful info and I suspect they want the labour rate for investigating the issue....annoying!!!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Annoyingly Poor Fueling/Ride
« on: 28 July 2012, 01:54:32 am »
Bike feels like it has really badly balance "carbs" (if it had them  :) ) and fuel consumption is laos very poor. if feels like it is running "rich" hence my thought of throttle bodies or ECU but dont' treally know enough about the ECU side of things to thinks of suggestions.
i know from when I had a CB1300 there was a specific way of resetting the ECU cos of fueling issues but cant remember what the process was or if possible.
It is possible that the previous owner had the bike remapped or equivilant so trying to get a starting point to come up with a resolution.....i hate going to a dealer with the view of "can you fix this..." as it gives then the £'s sign. Much better saying can you do this...... ?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Annoyingly Poor Fueling/Ride
« on: 27 July 2012, 07:34:04 pm »
I have just replaced my Gen 2 '06 FZ1 Fazer with a '10 Plate, mainly because I fancied a different colour   :\
Now the '06 model, as you would expect, was a bit snatchy with the fuel injection, especially on a half throttle. Although it was noticable I could ride around the issue and it was perfectly fine.
As the ECU was changed for the later models my expectations was that things should have improved a bit........how bloody wrong was I. My new bike looks great but the fuelling is so bad it is almost unrideable. Fine on closed or full throttle but anywhere in between it is bloody awful.
Now I know the previous owner had a race can on it and "may" have had a power commander but both have been removed so what could be causing this and what can I do to rectify:
  • Could it be that the throttle bodies need rebalanced?
  • Could the ECU be out of sync having had a PC/can on it and needs "reset"
  • Anything else?
If 2 how can you reset the ECU?
Looks nice though  :)

Both the Yamaha and Givi screens for the Gen2 have useful side addtions that work well to keep the wind off the hands. Great in the winter hence why I am looking at these models

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / FZ1 Fazer Screen - Givi Touring screen??
« on: 16 July 2012, 11:51:31 pm »
I used to have a Yamaha Touring screen on my previous Gen 2 which I found was "ok" but loads of wind noise and buffeting on my lid. Much better than the standard though.
Looking for any alternatives and have seen the Givi and Puig touring screens. The Givi, whilst looking a  bit ugly, looks the most practical Anyone tried either of these?

For Sale & Wanted / Wanted - GEN 2 Standard Seat
« on: 14 July 2012, 05:36:12 pm »
Needing a standard seat for my Gen 2 if anyone has one "spare" to sell me  ;)
Just bought another FZ1 but the clever previous owner has cut the original seat down to fit his short dumpy legs and it does not fit well with my legs (or ar*e for that matter).
Any condition considered!

173
Dont understand why anyone would buy a new FZ1. List price of 10k.......you are having a laugh. I admit the build quality of the Yamaha's is very good (better than Honda IMO) but not to carry that premium price.
You can get a 2 year old bike for under half the price. I have bought an 18 month old '10 plate with nominal miles for 5k.
Makes a better should than when playing on my organ too  :rolleyes

General / Re: FJR1300 or Tiger 800????
« on: 11 July 2012, 12:06:30 am »
Two Wheels in Edinburgh Gringo. Sales guys are great but servicing/after sales are ridiculously bad. Dealt with them years ago when I had my CB1300 and actually tried to persuade Honda to remove their franchise  :lol . as I had a list of owners with serious service issues from them. Obviously failed in that attempt and the service from Honda UK was even worse.
Unfortunately having spoken to current triumph owners in the area they have not changed. Was going to buy a Tiger "down south" but then servicing was always going to be an issue.
Looked at a Gen1 the other day but they seem to all be high milers with a high price to match.
Looks like I am going to get myself another FZ1....seen a few 09/10 plates for 5k which is a bit of a bargin   ;)

General / Re: FJR1300 or Tiger 800 - Buying neither!!
« on: 06 July 2012, 11:57:44 am »
Gave up on the Tiger idea. Also gave up on the FJR as I could not see the FJR coping with my kamikaze filtering techniques. Looked at the Z1000SX but they are ridiculously expensive. Cheapest on MCN is £7300.
I was also looking at another FZ1 but would need another bike for the winter as I found the FZ1 a nightmare in slippy conditions.
So looks like I am following Pitternators lead here and "regressing" back to a Gen1  :rolleyes .
I said I would never do it as I think the Gen 2 is a better bike for me, but picking up a '05 FZS1000 for a decent price and will run this all year round.
With the additional funds I am saving I may wait til next year to buy a "toy" ( unless the wife gets here grubby hands on the cash first  :'( )
