This has got to be up with the most idiotic ideas ever posted on focu. Only a loop fruit would want to reduce braking efficiency. Learn to ride to the conditions, have a full understanding & knowledge of the the limits of the controls available to you & ride accordingly. If you're regularly locking up alter your technique because it's crap.
Noggy, if bfp is correct why does my front wheel come down when I dab the rear brake doing a wheelie ;)

It's the fkin chain...adjust it to about 35mm & all will be good again.

They use the same speedohealer. It's a Yamaha thing.....

For anyone new to the fzs there's no better resource than the following:
http://www.cartestsoftware.com/fz1/ including contributions by the UK guru Mike.
It's been around for well over 12 years & been linked thousand of times & yet it's still ignored by many.
There's no need to reinvent the wheel, it's already round & spinning.

The 4 turns out on the compression is with the lighter oil not the stock oil, should have said 8 turns out. Vodka blue pays havoc with the thought processes :-)
Willy, I preferred 30mm rear preload & 35mm front preload but yes certainly as a starting point they should get you close.
Even with the electronic suspension on my s1r the preload still has to be set manually, having said that I've tried the recommended settings & I prefer it with more travel so you will need to experiment to find the optimum settings for you.

Hi bud
Forks: The compression is a little harsh & the rebound a little soft as stock.
I put lighter oil in the compression fork & heavier oil in the rebound fork.
Till then try 4 compression & 12 rebound :-)
Trial & error for your aftermarket shock but sounds like more compression is required ( assuming you've set sag correctly ) I found 30mm was good on the gen2

edit: after reading a comment above got to say raising the forks makes a significant improvement on turn in. Fact!

It's hiding because you're not worthy.
Of all the tours I've done there's never been one where I considered changing back to the stock gearing.
The intention on all those tours was to maximise my enjoyment, reducing the bike's acceleration would be counter productive.

How the fuck is staying in 5th gear instead of 6th going to give the increased acceleration through the gears that this mod gives.

Thanks Mike, it has taken something special to get me to part with the fazer, having owned both gen1 & gen2 over the last 10 years.
The s1r has 24 months warranty so I'm surprised your mate has been stung, unless you mean the s1rr.
I'm sure you'd love it as a riding experience but like me be frustrated by the fact that there's not a lot that can be done to it in the home garage apart from the menial tasks like checking tyre pressures etc. All is forgotten once out on the road though :-)

Nick, you have a superb bike, it's certainly sexy, I just hope you don't suffer from the well documented problems that beset some. In tests there's nothing to choose between the 1290, v4 & s1r & they are the cream of the crop :-)

Thanks for the comments

Janet, it is a bit taller than the gen2, I have the comfort seat fitted & that's about 20mm higher again. It's definitely at least 30mm higher seating position than the gen2. At only 5'6" I'm on tiptoes but have been with all my bikes. I agree with what you mean by being sat on, rather than in, so I've fitted some 30mm risers to compensate. Taller, by that I mean normal sized peeps wouldn't notice.

Drax, the sports version has gold forks & the standard version has black forks. I'm running it in by motomans method & have been upto full rpm a few times & boy does it shift. Out on it Sunday I thought it was going to pull my arms out of the sockets, the upright riding position is partly responsible for that of course.
Apparently, it depends upon the dealer whether they remove the limiter on the pdi, mine is thankfully. Some people mistake the change gear light for the running in limit. It's not & in anycase the shift light can be set by the rider.

Handling wise, it's a joy to throw around, a proper riders bike this one. I have a 30 mile route around where I live that I have some fun on, it has almost zero traffic on the backroads so ideal. The way this bike, at speed, just takes it all in it's stride is amazing & when, like on a particularly fast left, right, left over a crest the ASC ( automatic stability control) warning light flashes you just know you're pushing on. Stunning.

Then, back onto the dual carriageway, push a button to soften the damping, another to put on the heated grips & another to set the cruise control.
Tell me what there isn't to like.  :)

Meant to add: I do agree that this could be the bike to move from the gen2 to. Well I did. Also bmw are bringing out an adventure bike based upon this engine etc next year, I bet that will be a big seller.

Thanks for the comments.  :)
As to cost Willy, there's 2 ways to look at it.
1) Comparatively speaking with the current crop there's a hell of a lot of bike for the money.
2) £11.4k for the rs + upto now over £1k in mods is a lot of money.
We all have our weak spots, mine is the bike  :)

Went for a blast on me fz1 loved every second of it not regretting getting rid of my gen 1 at all. I proper love the throaty growl of the gen2 and man on man that quickshifter is fun! Think I had it pinned in 1/2 but to scared to look down and see. Gonna try and find a decent sprayer tommorrow for the rear cowl and my newly acquired OCD

Good to hear Paul, it's a cracking bike but has so many mods it's not your average gen2  ;) & glad to see it's not the only thing I passed on  :)

If you get the chance, take a ride on one. They're a serious bit of kit. A stonking motor allied to supreme handling & if you get in trouble a host of electronic aids to keep you in one piece. The bike is bonkers if you want it to be & yet with a choice of soft, medium or hard suspension settings, cruise control & heated grips make this bike much more than a hooligan tool.
I've swapped a few bits out already & will do more this coming winter but really it doesn't need anything, but we all like to mod our bikes don't we.
It'll be touring Europe this year so it'll be interesting to see how it fares, I reckon it'll be a hoot.  :)

Keith, in that link it's only some guys opinions from nearly 2 years ago. They don't actually have any personal experience with them, unlike the manufacturers & more importantly people who have actually bought & used them like me  ;)
I may get one for my s1r

Dazza, it's the 6 pin connector that would cause the problem, when you opened it you probably cleared the short circuit, maybe some water off the jetwash. The corrosion on the pins in the 13 way could cause a high resistance between contacts but unlikely to cause a short circuit. Contact cleaner followed by dielectric grease is the best preventative method.

ok if you want to shed weight
not ok if you occasionally ride (will have to diconnect battery and re connect as they lose charge quicker)  or ride in winter (piss poor starters in cold winter conditions)

Where did you find this information as it's totally contradictory to the manufacturer's description or is it just your opinion.
They claim easier starting in cold conditions ( you leave the ignition on for a few seconds to heat it up before starting the engine) & virtually no loss of voltage over extended non-use.
I have owned 2 Shorai & not found either of your statements to be true.
