Title: EXUP Noisy
Post by: BOSSMANJAY on 21 March 2013, 12:42:07 pm
My 2002 fazer's Exup is rattling bad, 37k miles. Can it be removed without any harm? Thx

Depends what you mean by 'harm'.

In order of price, you have four options.

1) Learn to like the rattle.
2) service your EXUP and hope that makes the rattle go away.
3) repair/replace your EXUP.
4) pay for aftermarket  headers with no EXUP but then you will lose most of the smooth low rev torque. You will also take a chunk off your resale value that you should take into account.

firstly, check play in the exup cables. too much slack makes the valve flutter at tickover.

True, that ...

Time to worry is when you can't hear it at all ... usually indicates the bloody thing has seized up! :lol

Mines having a little rattle at the moment, bless it!
Not too worried though cos I serviced at a couple of weeks ago. Will check cable slack when I get a chance, but more worried about my flat back tyre at the moment :lol

Cheers guys, serviced the thing but still noisy. Now I'm thinking that there might be wear where it locates in the exhaust opposite the cable attachments, should there be a shim in there? Or maybe it is just slack cables although bloody difficult to get them right!
More advice please!

Yes there is and very easy to lose as it can slide off the valve as you pull it out, roll under the bike and disappear into another dimension. Found mine about 3 days later after kicking it but had no idea where it had come from until a helpful focc'er identified it for me :o  I'll see if I can find the pics.
