FZS600 Fazer / Things to check/first bits to buy:
« on: 15 June 2013, 07:23:59 pm »
Well guys, as is the way with a new bike to yourself, you feel the need to give it a bit of a check, and do personalise it a bit - make it more your own.

Aside from the front sprocket nut, are there any other hidden things that need to be checked on Fazer? She certainly runs and looks fine, but anything on the inside that would be a good shout?

Also want to personalise her a bit, the brakes are on the original lines and feel a little squishy (although sure pull the bike up hard when slammed on!) so I'll be getting a set of braided hoses for her. Will also be after a monokey compatible topbox rack to pop a box back on her, and possibly a few other bits if money allows - particularly want a Scottoiler and possibly a bagster tank cover (if I can figure out what colour it is I've got!).

Are there any particular modifications that make a really big riding difference to a Fazer 6? The screen I feel could be a tad higher, but I'm going to leave it at the moment as it does limit my motorway cruising speed nicely to about 85! Only other thing I can think of along these lines are possibly changing the handlebars as they do feel quite upright and close, which is a bit of an odd feeling!

Also got a rear seat that has a rip in it to get recovered, would make sense to get it reshaped to make it a bit more comfy whils I'm at it - anyone able to recommend any good shapers in the Leicestershire/general Midlands area?

FZS600 Fazer / Blimey
« on: 14 June 2013, 09:16:02 pm »
Having gotten used to riding a ZX9R and then an FZS1000 (both bigish, powerful bikes), having just gotten in from riding my new FZS 600 home it was a bit of a slap in the face!

The things like a bicycle to ride, feels very small and really tips into corners in a very nice way indeed with little effort. Wasn't originally that impressed with the power (although I did expect that having dropped 400ccs) but then remembered you actually have to rev a 600 - tried that and it gave me a rather pleasent surprise!

Did about 70 miles, seemed comfy enough and it reckons i've done 1/4 of a tank so looks good from an mpg perspective.

Initial things now are to get some photos taken and uploaded, give her a clean now she's been spattered in bugs, set the sag on the suspension, get a scottoiler and probably a bagster tak cover too!

General / FZS 1000/600 Comparison?
« on: 01 June 2013, 02:13:31 am »
Hey guys,

Has anyone/does anyone own both the FZS600 and the FZS1000, and fancies giving a bit of a comparison between the two? I've just sold my FZS1000, and was considering the 600 as its much cheaper to insure (which for me at 21 is a big deal), the main thing stopping me though is that I'm worried I'll miss the grunt of the 1000?
It's been quite a long time since I had a 600 to be honest, last couple years have been on a 900 ninja and then the 1000, both of which even when loaded up with luggage and a pillion would take off like a scalded cat by twisting the throttle (the FZS at lower revs, the ninja faster up top).
THe only 600 I had before that for a couple years was a hornet 6, which was a proper revvy bugger. Was okay by myself, but with a pillion and luggage I did feel it struggled a bit somewhat?

For Sale & Wanted / Wanted, FZS1000/600
« on: 01 June 2013, 02:10:17 am »
Well guys, my lovely FZS 1000 was driven away by a lovely fella from Leicester, which means I can now look at getting another bike!

So, what have you got?

Looking at either another FZS1000 (older/higher milage to get the price down) or an FZS600 (or a CBR600F if anyone happens to have one). If it is a 600, I think I want a foxeye, mostly for the better headlights but the bigger tank really won't go amiss with the riding I do.

So, what have y'all got?

General / FZS600 Model Differences
« on: 25 May 2013, 04:12:08 pm »
hey guys,

Gotten a bit confused on the differences between the different models of the FZS 600, if you fellas could clarify them that'd be great for me!
I know that there was the original, the FZS600
Then the FZS600S came along, and then the foxeye.
Now my query was mainly about the tank size, I know the 600S onwards had a bigger tank, and also had preload adjusters on the forks, but what was the actual difference in tank size? For some reason I thought that the original was 17L, then the S was 18L, and the foxeye was 22L, is that the case?

For Sale & Wanted / My FZS 1000
« on: 24 May 2013, 11:52:12 pm »
Still up for sale, my FZS 1000.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-FZS-1000-Fazer-2003-low-miles-excellent-condition-/330925424776?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item4d0cb14088

As said previously, would consider a CBR600F or a foxeye 600 in part exchange against it, with cash my way?
Price is £2999.99 ONO, would like to get it sold quickly though so price could potentially be slightly flexible!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Fuel Can Strap
« on: 13 May 2013, 06:51:50 pm »
Hey guys,

Just had the strap holding my fuel can on, was wondering if anyone happened to know whether the fuel cans were likely to be a standard size, and as such whether I could buy any old strap for it? Would just get one off fuel as they also do the baffle I need to buy for it, but rang them up and they're closed to Friday!

For Sale & Wanted / FZS 1000 - Any Interest?
« on: 08 May 2013, 03:32:01 pm »
Well due to an unexpected insurance issue (being 21, with a theft and a non-fault accident meaning that insurance was a lot higher than expected), I may have to sell my 2003 FZS 1000 in silver, in order to either pick up a cheaper FZS1000 with more miles/worse condition to save a few hundred quid so I can afford the insurance, or possibly even go for an entirely different bike (ones I've been thinking of at the moment are a CBR600F and a 2002 ZX6R (636cc))

So, is there anyone on here that's thinking of going for a FZS 1000 and wants to take mine off me?
Some details:
2003 model in silver, with just over 18k on the clock. Full service history and service book stamped up until the 16k service. Just had a set of Michelin Pilot Road 3's fitted about 1000 miles ago so obviously in very good nick, and the chain and sprockets are in good nick too. Both mechanically and cosmetically its in very, very good condition (checked the exup valve a couple weeks ago and it's fine).

Added extras that will be on the bike: Matching silver bellypan and hugger. Fender extender. Crash bungs. Radiator guard, and a scorpion exhaust (nice and fruity). Apart from that it'll be as standard (bar a Taurus immobiliser) - (I'll be keeping the givi luggage set for hopefully another Fazer!)
Not entirely sure what to ask for it, but similar bikes on ebay are going for about 3.2-3.5k (and up to about 4k for dealers).

It's really breaking my heart to sell it as I've really started to bond with it now the decent weathers come about, but I simply need to free up some cash somehow, and this is the only way I can think of to do it!

Any questions, or if anyone wants any pics, let me know and I'll get some uploaded!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Iridium Spark Plugs and Carb Balancing
« on: 30 April 2013, 11:43:23 am »
Hey guys,

Got a set of spark plugs sitting on my shelf, bought a set of NGKs before my ninja got stolen, but just wondered if they might be the same for the FZS 1000, and I'll get them popped in? They've got on them: CR9EIX
will keep nosing on the internet to see if I can find this out online!

Also, how sensitive are these bikes to carb balancing? It's coming up to 20k miles so I'll be doing a mini service:
New plugs
Carbs balanced
Engine oil and filter change
Air filter clean (may swap to a K&N, not for power but more that its reusable?)
New brake fluid (hopefully braided hoses)
Want to fit a scottoiler, money allowing
General check of hoses and cables
Check and greasing of bearings and pivot points

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Fuel Economy
« on: 03 April 2013, 12:50:41 am »
Well after my ranting about getting about 32mpg around town, and thinking there was something wrong with the bike, I feel I must make a public apology!
Have done two longer journeys on the old girl now and I was bloody impressed, did a tank of 195 miles, about 155 of that was motorways and 50 odd of that was very short run commuting - mpg on that tank worked out to be 52mpg! Didn't think that was at all bad as I averaged about 85/90mph for pretty much the entire run home from London to Leicester, fully loaded with my hard luggage on the back!
Had an even better result today, went out for a bit of a quick leisure blast, it was still pretty nippy out and there seemed to be cars everywhere so I couldn't properly hammer the old girl around, but on my tank of 100 miles, roughly 50 motorway and 50 having a blast, I got an mpg reading of 56.6mpg! Not bleeding bad at all that in my book, from a 1000cc pretty powerful engine!
Must admit, as much as I loved the top end scream of my old ninja 900 there's something lovely about the midrange on the FZS, the amount of time I spent today trying to put it into 7th! Even when I was at the twisties I was alternating between third and fourth for most of the time and the old girl was surfing the mid-range like a goodun.

They've got quite weird fuelling characteristics though as stock haven't they, I can tell it's running lean as it's quite hard to maintain a completely neutral throttle, and going from closed to open throttle does resort in a bit of jerking. Even more weirdly when I got home the bike smelt quite petrolly (usually a sign in my book of the bike running rich) which I don't really understand, I had flled it up so it may have been leaking a tad out of the overflow pipe or something, but I'd done 20 odd miles between the petrol station and my house!
All i need to do now is win the Euromillions; set of clipons, suspension upgrade, nice set of race wheels and a decent jet kit and setup, and this bike would be a BEAST.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Exup Valve
« on: 29 March 2013, 12:33:31 am »
I've not noticed anything odd with the bike since I bought it, but kinda want to check to make sure the valve is moving.
I've unfortunately not got my Haynes manual with me so can't check how to do this, but it is basically a undo the cover (looks to be 3 normal bolts), take it off, turn the bike on and rev it a bit, and make sure the valve is moving when the bike revs? Out of interest, on the other side of the exhaust pipe there are two small allan key bolts, what exactly do they hold to?
I imagine this would be much easier with my manual  :lol

For Sale & Wanted / Maxxis Supermaxx Touring
« on: 19 March 2013, 12:05:38 am »
Got a part worn set sitting in my conservatory if anyones interested, easy 3mm of tread on the back and 4mm on the front? Taken off my FZS1000, have never really gotten on with Maxxis and much prefer Michelins.
Sizes are 120/70 and 180/55.
If interested, send me a PM and we'll sort something out!
Ideally would be collected from Leicester, but I can sort out postage :)

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Dog bones
« on: 16 March 2013, 04:28:47 pm »
Would adjustable dog bones for the FZS 600 fit the FZS 1000? There's a set being sold on here that I'd not mind picking up, if they actually worked to raise the tail on my 1000!

General / Help Finding a Picture
« on: 12 March 2013, 06:28:49 pm »
During my search for new bars for my FZS1000, I managed to somehow find a link to a forum page on which a fella had posted a picture of his FZS 1000 with a set of clip ons fitted, he'd fitted a custom made carbon yoke cover that had where the holes usually are  for the risers filled in to cover the top yoke up. Now for the life of me I can't seem to find this picture, but I'm trying to find out what bars he had fitted as they looked pretty tidy!
Been searching all over the internet with a combination of "FZS 1000/FZ1 gen 1, clipons and yoke cover", as I can't remember the site at all, if it was American or English! If anyone happens by chance to remember the picture i'm on about, it'd be greatly appreciated if you could post a link up!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Clipons
« on: 12 March 2013, 02:17:27 am »
Anyone ever put a set on an FZS1000? I'm liking the bike very much in general (although at the moment the cold, and short journeys are HAMMERING my mpg), but aside from that there's only one issue I'm not liking much on the bike - the riding position. I'm going to sort some rearsets out when I get the money to sort my legs out, as at the moment it feels practically cruiser like, but the main issue I've got with the riding position is the bars - I came from a ZX9R which was literally all day comfortable as it balanced the weight on my wrists/ass perfectly for me, the Fazer has a heck of a lot more comfy seat, but it gives me back ache after a couple hours, which is really ruining an otherwise excellent bike! Don't want something stupidly low down, but something maybe an inch and a bit above the top yoke would be ideal I think

After a web page I had for the FZS1000, was a yank fella that had done a fair old amount of work to his bike? Had it saved under my favourites and now can't find it for love nor money!

General / New Tyres
« on: 08 March 2013, 02:15:31 pm »
Well guys, I've had enough of riding around like i'm on ice, and decided I'm going to get rid of the tyres on my FZS1000 at the moment - some maxxis touring compound that seems ok in the dry, but can't handle what I'm trying to throw at it in the wet!

Want to go for something sports tourerish, I've had both the Pilot Road 3s and the Bt23s before and liked both, although I suspect the Michelins may help to speed up the steering a tad on the fazer as they felt like they had a more pointy profile, whereas the bridgestones seemed to roll into corners more.

Local tyre place fitted the michelins last time for £230 all in, which I didn't think was too bad. However, their prices have gone up a fair bit now, and i'm looking at about £285 for the set fitted, although there is a current discount of £30 for fitting from michelin themselves.
The BT23s are almost exactly the same price, £288 all in

Anyone know anywhere in the Leicester/Leicestershire based region that could likely beat those prices?

Other option, is if anyone is remotely near me and has the ability/time to fit and balance a pair of tyres, I could buy the tyres online, stick them on the bike and ride to you, bringing a couple cases of beer, or whatever form of compensation you'd like?

For Sale & Wanted / Fazer 1k Shock Wanted
« on: 07 March 2013, 11:46:29 pm »
As in title really, after something decent aftermarket wise for an FZS 1000, ideally something with a remote preload adjuster, and it has to be at least adjustable for individually rebound and compression, as well as the obvious preload. Ride height would also be a bonus.

General / Yamaha Motto?
« on: 16 February 2013, 06:35:19 pm »
Fancy getting myself a half decent license plate made up for my bike, and wanted the Yamaha motto/tag line on it. Used to have a similar thing on my old ninja saying "Let The Good Times Roll", which was the Kwak motto, but what's the Yamaha equivalent?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Recommended Tyres?
« on: 15 February 2013, 02:40:20 am »
Anyone ever tried Maxxis Supermaxx Touring out before? I had a pair of the sport maxxis on my ZX9R and quite liked them, had a decent amount of grip in the dry, only issues I had is they wore very quicly, and I couldn't lean the bike over much in the wet due to the lack of tread on the sides!

Got a pair of the touring ones at the moment on my FZS 1000, and really haven't yet gelled with them. They don't really feel "bad" as such, but I don't really seem to be feeling much confidence in them at all, particularly on roundabouts (although that could also be up the more upright position too). Obviously where it's been wet and cold out I've not been trying out the front brakes particularly hard, but the rear has certainly been a fair bit easier to slide coming up to traffic lights than any previous bike/tyre combo I've had!

Main reason I'm not liking them at the moment though (can't tell if it's because of the cold, or the tyres) is because they are spinning up very easily under power. I've not been properly nailing it yet a lot, but even on dry roads if I give it about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle in first or second it'll quite often spin up, and although I'm getting a bit more used to it happening, it still makes me cack myself a tad when it does!

General consensus, crap tyre, or should I just properly adjust my riding habits and tiptoe everywhere until the sun comes back out properly?

Are there any specific tyres that come highly recommended for the FZS 1000? I've had both Bridgestone 023s and PR3s before and liked both of them, reckon the PR3s may have the edge as they felt a bit quicker to turn in, which on the FZS would probably be a good thing. That said, Bridgestone have got their new sport-touring compound out, so that could be interesting!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Screen?
« on: 12 February 2013, 04:26:01 pm »
Well went for a decent longish ride today, got up to the heady heights of about 80mph, and noticed that I was getting a fair old bit of wind noise around my helmet! I did suspect coming from a fully faired sports bike to a semi faired one I'd notice a bit of a difference, so took it as granted. I did however, then notice that if I sat bolt upright it was a bit better. Stood up on the pegs and lifted my ass a couple inches off the seat, and it was like I'd just put my head into a bubble, it was lovely and quiet! Obviously my body was getting a bit more battered, but my head was in the quiet.
I know the screen on there isn't stock, it's tinted for one thing. It's not a double bubble though and does look to me as though it's roughly the standard height?

So if this is roughly the stock screen, what screen would be recommended for someone about 5 foot 10 to push the wind over my head?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Possible Problem?
« on: 12 February 2013, 04:14:25 pm »
Well the last few days I've been a bit worried that my fuel gauge doesn't seem to work properly, as it had been going down quite quickly towards empty, and I'd only done about 100 miles! Got to 115 today and the light came on, so I went to fill it up to check the light was coming on when it should. Popped it on the centre stand (is that the best way to fill this bike, or is it the side stand?), and got 16.4 liters in it, so if the reserve is the stated 4.5liters it should be, then my reserve light and fuel gauge is pretty much spot on!

This however led to another issue, I appear to have only got 32mpg! My riding for the last tank has been entirely around town, not really any hard acceleration, but there have been a few traffic light drag starts  :lol As my old Ninja 900 would do about 44mpg in the same circumstances, I'm guessing that this does appear to be quite high usage?
The bike doesn't smell of petrol when running, and seems to run well enough for what it's worth! I did check my tyre pressures for the first time today and found them to be about 5psi each below what they should be, so got those filled up to 36/41. Also readjusted my tickover, it'd been seeming like it was going to stall a bit when pulling away in the very cold so I'd upped the idle a bit to help, (up to about 1250), got it back down now to about 1150 (which sounds a bit low by ear, but is the top end of what the Haynes manual recommends).
I think what I'm going to do to make sure that the mpg issue wasn't because of me not filling it all the way last time, is I'll keep an eye on this tank, if it's roughly the same then I know I've got an issue! My bike is stock engine wise, bar a slipon exhaust, and from what I've read they run a bit lean anyway as stock so I shouldn't really be running rich! I also weigh about 10.5 stone leathered up, so it's not because I'm weighing the beasty down - the engine doesn't notice the difference between me and a mate on it, just feels like it wants to lift more with a friend  :lol

73
Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Cigarette Sockets?
« on: 05 February 2013, 01:55:04 pm »
Where abouts have you all mounted any cigarette sockets you've got on your Fazers? On my old bike I had it mounted properly into the undertray under the seat so I could charge my phone without it being on show, but there's really not a lot of space under the seat for a proper mounting! Could mount it into the side panel infill things, but then I'd have to take the cable back right under the seat to charge it.

Current plan is to just leave the socket cable tied under the seat, but if anyone has any more permanent/rigid solutions, let me know?  :)

74
Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Bloomin heck these things don't hang about!
« on: 31 January 2013, 03:27:09 pm »
Got my first proper chance to actually give the beasty a bit of a handful, and what I got was definitely not what I was expecting!
I just came off a ZX9R, which itself had once I'd finished with it, just over 140bhp at the wheel. The Fazer I have now is standard in the engine department, except for a slipon can, so I was expecting it to be down on the Ninja anyway, and due to the "midrange bias" of the FZS, I was expecting the Ninja to be a fair bit quicker once you got the revs screaming.

With this in mind, I pulled out onto the A6 at about 30mph, selected second and nailed it. With the 9, this would result in the front end going a bit light, and then once I'd selected third it'd be solid as a rock until ...mph. What actually happened on the Fazer was the front end came right up, let go of the throttle a bit and it went back down, put into 3rd and nailed it and it started getting incredibly light on the front again!
I've already been very impressed with the engine so far for it's sheer grunt, but now I reckon from 0-100 it'd have my old 9 beat, to maybe 140 odd it'd probably be pretty even, and only after that would the ram air and aerodynamics of the 9 get it ahead.

My general summation of the above: "Re-tuned engine"? Balls, it's an R1 engine that just has flat bars!
Can see me very much liking this bike, although I may need to sort a steering damper out if I start cracking on more as I'm very much not used to how light the bars were on it!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Givi Pannier Racks
« on: 28 January 2013, 07:43:58 pm »
Evenings guys,

Looking at buying a set of Givi E21s and side racks off a fella on here, and had a couple questions about them? In the photo he's sent me, the indicators have been relocated up onto the topbox rack, and then there's a metal brace going between the pannier racks through the indicator holes? I'm sure I've seen givi panniers on bikes for sale though with the indicators in the usual place, so is this back brace not really needed, or is it a different type of rack or something?
