Hi Guys,


I have just bought my FZ6 S2 2008, it's standard bike, ie no Datatag alarm etc, I would like to add an alarm, I have had people say don't bother, but it's a piece of mind thing, on eBay there is a mind boggling amount of systems.
I don't have loads of money to spend, what you anyone recommend? I'm getting Datatag, so something that makes noise would be good, it has YISS built in, so something that would argue with that.

I'd recommend the Datatag too, it makes nicking the bike and breaking it for parts a lot more difficult.

A big, f***-off chain, tied round a solid object should be your first line of defence. If it's immobilised by a chain, your average chav / opportunist thief will leave it alone (most thefts are opportunist, pro thieves are a different thing).

Alarms are a waste of time IMO - nobody takes notice of them anymore. If your alarm is under the seat, you'll use up your already-limited space.

Datatag or Smartwater might be useful if a bike is stripped for parts, BikeTrac might be useful to prevent it getting that far.

A cover can help disguise the bike's identity (to prevent cloning).

Professional thieves however, will know every security system going, and how to beat it, and nothing short of an armed guard will stop them.

The cost of any security is far cheaper than replacing a bike that's been hoovered up by our nations less-honest citizens (and the resulting increased insurance).

I find me 2 fully grown Rottweilers protect my motorcycle just fine :-)

Since you have yiss and datatag, you only really need a basic alarm that senses vibration etc.

A guy in the uk makes and sells some on ebay fot about 20-30  quid that I've used on a tdm before and did the job nicely.

Look for NCS motorcycle alarms on ebay and they have a range but the V2 is probably good for your needs.

Datatool alarm/immobiliser fitted by dealer last summer to replace 10 year old Acumen. My bike is 2003 & pre-YISS.
Icarry a small disc lock under seat & have a "Titanic anchor" size chain/padlock for the shed.
Interestingly my insurance company insisted on a Thatcham approved alarm. But as you have the Yamaha coded keys you should be ok with a simple loud alarm/movement detector. Its all a pain but sadly necessary.

Actually to be more specific I have an Acumen immobiliser and alarm, xena xx17 disc lock and almax chain with squire lock. Ground anchor is the way to go.

Our Fazer's nth have "D" locks on the front wheels and big chains and padlocks (Thatcham approved) on the rear wheels - and they both are data tagged


Liz's Fazer 1000 had a Meta 357 alarm/immobiliser which wasn't wired in properly, which we removed.


My RSV has a Meta 357 alarm/immobili, but also has a self alarming padlock on the front wheel and on the rear sprocket. And it's data tagged


Hopefully, our bikes are as un-nick able as they come.

Whats the thoughts on those alarm disc locks? 

Never been keen as I've thought a big wedge of chewing gum could possibly quieten them down easily, but are they worth getting?

Well if it's noise you are after, an alarmed disc lock is easier to fit, cheaper, removable than an alarm.  Makes a right racket does the xena.

+1 for an alarmed disc lock.. Never been a fan of the often troublesome / battery draining bike alarms..

Don't know if you got your security sorted but I'd recommend people take a look at a company called Pragmasis. They're a UK company that makes chains/locks/ground anchors.

I bought their protector 16mm chain with an 'untouchable' lock and it's brilliant. 2 meters long, uncropable and chained to a telegraph pole. The bike isn't going anywhere :p.
