Title: Cam chain life
Post by: solorider on 16 June 2018, 09:48:07 am
what sort of life would the gen 1 cam chain last? Mine is on 76k and I have a manual tensioner fitted (one of my first mods)

Not a Fazer I know but my tdm's are on 150000 and 110000 on the original cam chains and still as quiet as a mouse.

I would imagine they stretch / wear very gradually but even so, I suspect that if the engine is looked after properly other engine parts will fail before the chain does.
Plenty of people already well over 100k but if you're keeping her and are a bit worried maybe treat her during the 96k big valve check when the cams are being disturbed?

You can download the service history of the 200,000 mile Gen1 from here http://fz1grl.net/2012/03/fz1_maintenance/ (http://fz1grl.net/2012/03/fz1_maintenance/) and no the camchain was never replaced.

As you've got a manual tensioner, you might get premature wear if you don't get the tension right.Mine still has the original tensioner, but she's only done 35,000 miles.

As someone with a manual tensioner it's pretty easy to tell by ear if you have it set with too much pressure on the chain. Conversely it's next to impossible to know if your automatic tensioner is going to give out and destroy your engine. Pretty much equal chance of either happening IMHO, to quote - ride more worry less.

156000 miles, original cam chain and tensioner from new on mine. Fresh oil and filter every 4000 miles and not revving the nuts off it everywhere helps longevity I would think.
