I fitted a mudsling to close off the rear shock.  Yup like too many modern bikes the rear is too narrow and too short.  Yeah muck goes everywhere, and I’m told a hugger doesn’t make much difference.

Apparently, this New Zealand only OE BMW part is a possible solution.   It sits behind the indicators and license plate.

Not decided on it yet.

Travel restrictiona were lifted in Scotland last weekend - naturally it pissed down the whole weekend. So took the day off yesterday and headed oot fae a spin.  My first proper run on the R1250R.
Headed to Gourock, ferry to Dunoon.  Portavadie, ferry to Tarbert, got a good soaking on the way up to Oban (spot the weird bike parked up in Oban).  Top notch fish super from the George Street Chippe.  Up to Glencoe, doon Glen Orchy, a wee rest in Arrochar, then back down to Dunoon for the ferry back to Gourock.

The twat in that video says how it's the hot exhaust pipe that's igniting unburnt fuel and that you need the pipe nice and hot....but it also works well with a cold exhaust :rolleyes . What the foc is he on about?. How can it light off both hot and cold?.

Anyway I thought it was flame from successful combustion following on behind the unburnt fuel in the exhaust that ignited it?.

 Not watched that video.

But some of these tunes are squirting a little fuel in when you come off the throttle.  So, with no spark when you lift the throttle, that fuels goes into the exhaust to give you some crackle and pop.

Now get this.   I’m told some of these fucking wankers fit a spark plug, apparently just after the last box, so I am told, and have got it wired up so it sparks every time they left right off the pedal.  Those are the guys making the big bangs and backfires everywhere they go.

It’s not just annoying and anti-social but it can give people a serious fright.  It’s also a serious issue for folks with cats and dogs, horses, not to mention detrimental to wildlife.

I could go on.

I’ve no doubt something will happen here soon.
It seems to me that the majority of Harley owners fit short slash pipes or similar, with zero silencing.  They are annoying and anti-socially loud.
Then there is the trend for cut down cans.  Plus, loads of modern bikes being de-catted, which often means replacing the combined cat/silencer with a bit of stainless tube, along with a six inch straight through ‘silencer’.
Some of these bikes can make you jump as they pass they are so foccing loud.
All the boy racers are in on it now too.  De-catted hot hatches, free flow exhausts, and worst of all ‘crackle and pop’ tunes.  The people who sell and set up ‘crackle and pop’ tunes along with those that own such modified vehicles – well how about hang and quatre – foccin muppits.
Look I like bikes and cars that sound good, that make a wee bit of noise.  But I also like to be able to start my bike at 7 in the morning and ride off down the street without annoying anybody.
I fear that bikers are, and because of ever increasing noise, once again being seen in general by many as anti-social pests,
At some point there’s gonna be new laws and enforcement.

Plus Gas was what I used last year on my Speed Triple. Got them all out, and they'd been in there 25 years.
That sounds good.

VNA any idea what dinged your downpipe mate?
No idea to be honest.  I just noticed the ding one day.  I can only presume some a car kicked up a decent sized stone – glad it hit the downpipe and not the oil filter.

Anyway looking at my studs, there may be some hope there.  From left to right no.1 and no.4 look OK-ish,  no. 2 is the worst.  The stud towards the centre doesn’t look good – it’s right in line with the front wheel and I don’t mind the rain that much.  It’s full of crap in there, so I need to have a good clean and have a closer look.  No.3, the one nearest the centre sits higher and has been protected a little by the radiator.

Anyway other jobs to do first.

Don't you think however smooth and used to it you are changing without the clutch puts wear on some parts of the box? I would have thought just fanning the lever and dropping the revs a gnats' would be a far kinder way of going up the box, then again if you've had no problems doing it fair enough,I personally do it if I'm going for it through the gears but not as a constant thing, only my opinion .
It’s how I’ve been doing it 25 years or more.  I can’t see how it can do any harm.  I also often go down the box without the clutch at low speed.

I do wonder however, if gearbox issues will become more common now that we are in the age of the quick shifter.  The two I have tried were crude compared to an old-fashioned clutch-less change.  I just don’t get what all the fuss is about quickshifters.

be worth doing mate. im guessing mine will look the same
I’d love to get behind there and clean everything up.  And change that hose – I take your Fazer is all original hoses too?

Anyway, lots of other things to do.  But maybe I might come back to those downpipes.  Another option would be to get a quote from a decent bike mechanic – as I’m thinking mine probably aren’t that much of a challenge to an experienced mechanic.

135
Cheers Robbo.  I guess they could be a lot worse, certainly the nuts are good enough for a socket to grip.  But……..

Anybody swapped that wee hose out without taking them off?    Anything else behind them that I need concern myself with.

136
Here's what the downpipes look like.

I guess I’m starting to miss my Fazer.  She’s sorn and was lying abandoned at the side of the garage while I tried to make up my mind what to do about her.  So, travel restriction has been lifted this weekend in Scotland, but guess what – it’s pissing down.  So, I started fiddling.

There’s no hurry here.  Just do one thing at a time, and as I please or not.  Of course, I worry I might start breaking things.   If I do, or I get bored, I can always off-load her – presumably.  Also there is still space for another a bike – I keep searching e-bay…………..hmmm.

Having bought the FZS1000 zero miles pre-reg in 2004, the one thing I regret is not popping the downpipes off a dozen years ago or so!   Looking at them now I’m thinking – just leave em.  I’m guessing some of them will just snap if I try.

So, radiator is off, for a clean up and a lick of paint.  Wondering if I should treat the bike to a new set of hoses.  I’ve seen the Samco stuff – but umm, 175 quid a set!  Is there anything else out there?

And, has anybody managed to change the wee short hose behind the downpipes – that is without first removing the downpipes?  Can it be done.  I take it all the other hoses are straightforward?

138
I like the look of the blue and white ones.
I take it FZ1S is the half faired FZ1 Fazer.
Is FZ1S the best e-bay search term?

That’s a sweet looking little thing.  She's got potential.   I take it there is a side cover missing?
You giving it the carb treatment?

I find a lot of 24hr services are no quicker than the budget option.
I figure often the tick box is just there in case you fancy paying extra.

And don't start me on the post office.  They just love to try and sell you their rip off insurance.

You know if their insurance rates were reasonable I'd take it out everytime, but it's just a pure rip off, and then their staff are trained to write 'customer advised' on your receipt to further pressurise you into taking their insurance.

Now I'll tell them what I'm sending (I suppose it's fair to ask to check that what you are sending is safe) but I refuse to discuss value.  Just give me recorded delivery please.

I got the same dilemma as you now VNA. Ive got my fazer back, but have only ridden it once.
Yeah – good to hear you got it back. :thumbup   Take it things have much improved for you.

I’m gonna be back at work five days a week next week.  Shocking, I’ve been doing alternative weeks since lockdown – apart from a three day week this week.  I’m gonna complain to the union. :lol

A pisspot?

You know what?  I miss my Fazer (it’s sorn and needing a little TLC)

Plus, though, I don’t mind riding in the rain.  Well the Beemer is spotless.  I don’t like taking it out in the rain.

I  also fear if I start trying to take things apart, I’ll just start breaking stuff.  The Fazer scrubs up no bad, but she did live outdoors for her first 7 summers, and I’m not bothered about riding in the rain – so there are lot of foosty fasteners.

no close-up shots though, and asking £4500 for a 2001, even with only 3k on the clock is pushing it.
Probably all a bit high.  I’d say they are all asking dealer prices.  The other thing is, sadly, the reality is more and more people are gonna have to let bikes go over the next year or so – I think dealer and private prices will slide a little.

FFS!  That was a close call.  Hopefully you are not missing any significant bits.
Good to hear you are on your way to getting it sorted.
What years were affected with this?

Blind and paranoid then Dude :lol

But no, I hear you.  If I was getting really tempted, I'd still want to pop down and eye ball it, hear it running, and if poss have a five minute ride.  Photos are one thing, but seeing it in the flash is another.
And of course carbs, along with modern fuel, good chance they are a bit gummed up.

But I think those three may well be real minters.

Naw Dude I think you are seeing things. The only thing I note is the frame covers over the swing arm pivot have a few marks.I think it's genuinely mint.3 owners, seems a bit odd that not one of them put any miles on it.But naw it looks like the real deal.

Now and again I have a look at what's for sale on e-bay.
I've still got my thou lying in my garage looking sorry for itself.  It needs some TLC.
But then I keep wondering, if the best route to keeping a thou on the road, is not to spend time and money on my exisitng bike, but to pick up a clean low mileage used example.
I mean look at this.  It looks genuine, it's even still got the crap Metz OE tyres on it.

Too far away for me.  But that could be a very nice bike for somebody.

This isn't really cool, its just absolute bonkers.
And nope it's not a historic bike - it's a new build.
Should make 240bhp he says.
