TPS ok, went to 5000rpm. Just been out on the bike and it seems ok apart from erratic tickover and I think a slight loss of power. Going to get the carbs balanced next week but in the meantime, any ideas as to why it would suddenly cut out the way I described ?

Thanks for the correction. Havn't done anything yet. Could you explain what I would be doing by setting the tacho at 10000 rpm and exactly how I eliminate the TPS from the list of possible problems

Just realised, TPS would be on injection engine, mines '98 carb. Apologies for the confusion.

Hi all,

Four months ago my '98 fazer died on me on the by pass doin about 80.
Fiddled with the choke an dropped down to 3rd and it picked up again but wasn't running quite right. managed to limp home 4 miles,  by which time it it was back to normal.

No probs since then apart from tickover so, 3 weeks ago, took off the tank and drained off quite a bit of water. Cleaned thoroughly an flushed carbs out till they ran clear. Have had no trouble till today, when the same thing happened on the same by pass!
Got home again with the help of the choke and low and behold its now running 'normal' again.
However there is a bit of a missfire when revving steadily up to 7-8000 rpm and tickover is a little erratic, the rev counter fluctuating 9-1000 rpm.
Seems like a fuel issue but would be glad of any advice.

FZS600 Fazer / 28000 mile service
« on: 09 January 2013, 06:57:29 pm »
Hi, I own a '99 fzs 600 and for the last 3 years have enjoyed riding it. My only gripe is having to rev the nuts off it to get away from a standstill.
The bike has full service history up to 24000 mls and has now just passed 29000 mls.
Can anybody tell me what I should be doing for its 28000 mls service, I have replaced chain and sprockets and stripped and greased up the swing arm linkage. Brakes are spot on, very little play in the headstock. Engine starts and runs sweet although there is a slight tappety noise on start up. :rolleyes

Introduction / 28000 mile service

Hi, my '99 fazer600 has now done 28000 miles without any probs. It has service history up to 24000 miles. I do oil / filters myself, swing arm stripped and greased so no excess play, brakes ok and generally seems in good condition. Any suggestions on what I should be doing for next service would be appreciated. :rolleyes

If anybody is interested,  I've found this site for free workshop manual download.

I got the Fazer 600 '98 and I think there is a 2000 one. Loads of other bikes too.
Well worth a look

Down in darkest cornwall virtualy no street lighting and road markings are generaly covered in mud. Soon as your lights go on they seem to be absorbed by the bushes, hedges and trees, hence the need for good lighting.
Also in recent years,  the deer have become so common they almost graze like cattle in the fields. Very dodgy at night, there have been lots of incidences just recently. Do Halfords do a clip on body heat detector ?

yep, that 2 hr stint sounds a bit right. Any other comments on a bit faster speed, don't want to blow the guts out of the bike though.

Has anyone done a long trip on a Fazer. Thinking of going to Assen for this years Moto GP. Got to get from Cornwall to the tunnel first.
What would be a reasonable, sustained cruising speed  and how long between breaks on average, bearing in mind I'm an old git

In reply to major rant, my lights are wired opposite way, right hand is 60/55 and left is 55. Both lights on full beam. Passed its test that way too.
Any way, whichever way you wire them you won't get much more light than a parrafin lamp.

Yes, just had it confirmed, deffo illegal.
Mechanic at local test station reckons upgrading to 100w bulbs could do the trick, he's going to check with sparky tomorrow.
Might be a much cheaper option,  though I haven't looked at the "100 %" brighter ones yet.
There is also a HIR type bulb which is  halogen infra red. This is supposed to be loads brighter without the ballast needed for HID or the legality problem.  More sniffing on the interweb needed!
Interestingly, MOT man said that the problem with HID fitted into halogen reflector is they are not designed the same as a HID lamp and so would possibly not give correct light pattern and therefore would  be a fail. However, if the beam pattern was ok and they were adjusted correctly (spot on), he would pass.
He who dares??

Just spotted this thread on lights and would be interested to see if there are any Fazer jockeys who ride faster than 60 mph at night on unlit roads.
I ride a '99 er,  the lights of which can only be described as barely adequate even though both are wired up to come on together.
I can remember a BSA 250 centuaries ago that I would gladly swap lights with!!
Was speaking to a ministry gentleman last week who put me off the HID conversion kits which he said are illegal as a retro fit.
What can be done to "let there be light".

Howdy, just joined the forum and initialy am interested in gaining experience in FZS 600 mechanical servicing, repair etc.
Living in Cornwallshire and enjoy buzzing around whenever I can, which is quite often now I have retired.
Will trawl the forum to see what's doing. :)
