FZS 1000 starting issues
« on: 10 June 2017, 11:22:13 am »
My 1000 has developed an issue when starting, sometimes it just clicks like the solenoid is energising but won't spin the starter. When this happens it also resets both trip meters and the clock as if the battery has been disconnected. Any ideas, I presume it's shorting somewhere but any pointers would be appreciated guys!

Don't think it is as when it "works" properly the engine spins quickly and freely. Might look at changing it though as I've not had the bike 12 months yet so not sure how old it is.

If you haven't done already, I would go through all the electrical block connectors, open them up check for corrosion, clean and give them a spray, also check the earth.

The main ones are under the seat, the one that connects the instruments, and one under the right side panel. But do them all, its only time and a can or electrical spray.

Mine used to do exactly the same. I cleaned all connectors with no real improvement.  I found that one of the previous owners had removed an alarm and simply twisted the wires back together rather than crimp/solder. This joint was badly corroded from arcing etc. Bewildered and was fine after.  I found it by using a multimeter on the batt and one of the connectors under the tank.

Hi matey.

Have you checked condition of pins in multi-plug under left fairing infill panel, caused me no end of grief till i pulled every terminal out to clean em, sorted all my starting & lighting faults.
Have you eliminated the starter solenoid?
Mine had an poor internal connection (corrosion) clicked/no crank, got a new non gen unit off ebay £15 posted, also starter button contacts burn/corrode & cause poor contact, i completely stripped handle bar switch gear & cleaned up starter button contacts with a small file & scotchbrite pad, painted all switch internals with ACF50 works mint now ... try bridging starter solenoid across with ignition on, if she cranks then you've likely got a fooked starter solenoid?
Manual may show some resistance values to test solenoid.
Sounds like you may have a few issues, but you gorra check the obvious stuff 1st.

As said above, I'd also advise remove & clean every earth connection.
