knocking through foot peg??
« on: 26 July 2015, 10:00:53 am »
hi all
went for a ride to south wales yesterday on the way back..at Bristol she developed a slight vibration then a knock
on which was coming through the foot pegs...at that point I pull in when coming to a stop there
was a squeak coming from one of the wheels..well that's where I thought it was coming from

almost like a dry bearing and the knock could be a missing ball bearing?????
so set off doing 60mph towards Exeter...get to Exeter on the slip road change down to 1st...pull off
and it then sounded like the chain was rubbing on the sprocket as I was going through the gears
so then thought it must be the front sprocket coming undone...got here home took the front sprocket cover off nothing
hasn't moved no sign of movement..so I got back on went around the block with no helmet on and the squeak and
what sounds like crunching was still there

so I have taken the rear wheel off late last night...
going to check bearings...but don't think its going to be that simple???? :'(

could it be behind the front sprocket don't know whats in there yet...but would think it involves all the gearing
release bearings and things like that.....I hope I don't have to go in there....

the squeak is like a dry bearing noise....

A knocking feel through the left footpeg is normally caused by stiff chain links. Basically they get dried out through lack of attention and just seize up.
Sometimes you can try and work them free with pliers and plenty of oil but i've normally found that once they start seizing they're on their way out.

If you put the wheel and chain back on with a bit of tension, have a look at the lower level of the chain while slowly moving the wheel around by hand.
Stiff chain links have a tendency to jam in a very slightly diagonal position, so will stand out to all the other horizontal links.
It may just be the one link or it could be several. If it's more than one then personally i'd just change it'cos it'll never be decent again.
Chains do need proper care and attention, especially during winter or these random monsoons that we get, and will need a proper clean with a brush every now and then, but must be kept well lubedall the time otherwise even a new chain can dry out quickly and be knackered in no time.

+1 for chain.  I had this on my FZS600, knocking through foot peg.  Changed chain and sprockets and it went.

Definitely worn chain and/or sprockets if all the bearings check out
