For Sale & Wanted / BMW S1000RR Shock
« on: 12 January 2016, 10:08:32 am »
BMW S1000RR Shock from 2013 bike.

Has been adapted to fit Fazer 1000 Gen 1. Will bolt straight on. I bought this from the US and it was fitted to my bike for about 500 miles last summer. Only removed as I lucked into a used Nitron shock at a good price.

It is far better than the standard shock and fits the same linkage. However at 13 stone I still found it a bit softly sprung for sporty riding so anyone heavier may want to get a heavier spring. There is a thread or two around with this modification and I think the american guy used a fireblade spring in his.

100 quid plus postage if anyone wants it.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / R1 Forks, Techical Stuff I dont Understand
« on: 23 May 2015, 07:45:43 pm »

Ok I have R1 forks (5pw) everything else is still a mystery. I was half inclined to buy a set of custom yokes and be done with it. The downside is that I will still have the same offset and sterring geometry on the std bike and I want it more on it's nose like a sports bike with handlebars.

One of the major benefits, to me, of this modification is to put the bike more on R1 geometry than its current its sedate steering.

I am pretty sure this can be achieved by using R1 lower yokes and a  Gen 2 top yoke but I dont have those bits and dont really know what years etc, plus I dont want to end up with a load of bits I may or may not be able to get someone more knowledgeable than me to splice together.I know Devilsyam was planning a solution with these bits but it wont happen unless 10 people commit and there is me and maybe another atm.So today I have been chasing up some racing contacts in the Supermono mob and have found some guys that will make adjustable yoke sets, knock me up a steering stem and programme the lot into their CAD database incase anyone else wants the same done in the future. So, what I need is a drawing or measurements of the adjusted FZS steering stem if anyone has one. Also, the angles of rake and trail that can be achieved with the R1 lower yoke set up.In an ideal world we will end up with a correctly specced bottom yoke that can adjust from the std offset to the most extreme R1 offset available, plus a stepped top yoke that offers the current fazer ride positon plus a variety of sportier alternatives. None of this will happen without your input as I know nothing.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Finally Found Forks
« on: 12 May 2015, 09:00:10 am »

After half a dozen unsuccessful bids I have finally got a set of R1 5PW forks for my front end conversion. They are gold, and black would have looked better but otherwise happy days.

Anyway, I am likely to be waiting a while for either a custom yoke set or for Devilsyam's steering stem so I am thinking of getting the forks sent off for set up. I know it would be best to wait until they are fitted but it would be great to have everything in place so I the bike is useable as soon as it is bolted together.

Has anyone running R1 forks done this? Did you need to go up or down from std springs? I have the std FZS forks set up with 9.5nm springs  and weigh about 13 st with kit.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / R1 Front End Cost Estimates
« on: 22 October 2014, 08:39:21 pm »
Winter is coming and the urge to tinker grows stronger so I have been reading up on front end conversions. So I am hoping to gain wisdom from those that have gone before.

I would be looking to add the radial calipers so I guess my choice is either 08 on 4c8 model or latest 14b model. Does any one know if the extra 19mm of fork length is worth the  likely extra money and hassle in finding the latest model forks?

In either instance I seem to be in for the following estimated costs

Forks 4-500 quid
calipers 100-150 quid
R1 lower yoke 40 quid
fz1 top yolk 40 quid
Late R1 fr wheel 200 quid
Discs 150 quid
spindle 25 quid
fr mudguard 50 quid
radial master cylinder 100 quid?

Total 1255 on the guessometer. Hopefully a good bit less as I have seen some US breakers selling complete front ends for 500 quid plus shipping and VAT.

Anything I have missed? What sort of money should I allow for machining the steering stem? Any recommendations on who to use?

Anyone sold or bought a converted front end complete? Obviously it isnt something I would include should I sell the bike for current market value so it would be useful to know if I could recoup most of my costs by selling the ready to fit front end should I change bikes.

Finally, if I end up buying a pair of wheels, how much should I allow for the conversion kit to fit the 6 inch rear?

Thanks

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / What Wheels and Why?
« on: 14 May 2014, 08:17:02 pm »
So phase 1 of my improvements to my 2004 FZS1000 should be complete on Sunday when it gets Ivanised.

Maybe in a year or so I will consider the R1 forks upgrade but I have just had my forks rebuilt and brakes serviced so I want to get some use from them first.

Time to start thinking of the cosmetic improvements starting with wheels. I dont hate the standard wheels and dont imagine there would be much, if any weight saved with aftermarket aluminium wheels or standard wheels from later bikes? I have carbon Dymags on my Superduke but doubt I will go to the expense on the Fazer.

I am not really bothered about a 6inch rear rim so  not R1 wheels.

Does anyone know if the later FZ1 wheels fit? Or are they 6 inch rears too?

Would the FZ8  or FZ6 wheels fit if I just wanted 5 spokes?

If either does fit, would this entail swapping to FZ1 / FZ8 / FZ6 discs also or would the FZS discs suffice.

Any other suggestions?

The other thing I havent noticed anyone talking about is gearing.  Every Jap bike I have ever owned I have gone down 1 tooth on the front or up 2-3 on the rear. Not sure If I will bother with the Fazer as I suspect it will be have plenty of acceleration once Mike has done his magic on it.

What sprockets do you all run?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / GPR End Can
« on: 26 April 2014, 08:34:59 pm »
Anybody had any experience with GPR exhausts? I am thinking about the GPE can in titanium and carbon.

Otherwise what is the recommended end can for these bikes? Preferably not a round can, shorter than the std can but not silly short.

Any ideas?

Introduction / Hello Everybody
« on: 21 April 2014, 11:07:26 pm »
I have been on Superduke and ktm forum for a few years (dont get out much).

Now sold my RC8 and bought a 2004 FZS1000 from a guy who had it from new and only managed 5000 miles (he didnt get out much either).

Got a few plans to upgrade the Fazer and will need to ask a few dumb newbie questions along the way. Please bear with me during this difficult time as the bike is a keeper and I hope I wont be the new boy in school for long.
