I have had some bikes with a lot of mods over the years and I have learned the hard way that you are wasting your time trying to explain mods to your average insurance call centre gibbon. What I do these days is get my quotes from the comparison sites, pick the cheapest two or three for the levels of cover you want. Then email them a list of mods and ask them if they can still do the same price. Otherwise you end up trying to explain why you would change a perfectly good standard clutch for a slipper clutch or the benefits of carbon wheels for hours to someone that doesnt really understand or care and just wants to tick boxes and get commission.

Back in the day (2006 ish) I had a crash on a heavily modified fireblade which went to insurance. I wanted to buy the bike back because the bits on it (undeclared) probably doubled the value of the bike. The insuance assessor didnt give a monkeys about any non standard parts all he was interested in was if any of the damage would have made the standard bike uneconomical to repair. He decided that a tiny scuff on the swinging arm would qualify it as a write off and was happy to get me a payout and let me buy the bike back for next to nothing.

I dont understand Carol Nash anymore. I was with them years ago with my R1 and they were cheaper than anyone. They wouldnt insure my Aprilia RSV Factory so I had to go to Equity Red Star then I had years of KTM's and kind of forgot about Carol Nash. Because of this thread I thought I would get a quote from them for my MT10 and Tracer 900 Gt and got a ridiculous £441, well over double any of the other quotes.

re-attached the photo for you fella, youi should consider removing the Nitron shock and selling that separately on here.

Thank you. I put the bike on ebay today, priced at £3750. If the bike goes without the shock I will list it on here. I also have an absolutely mint set of R1 forks (2001) to fit the blue spot calipers. I got them rebuilt with new seals and oil in 2016 as I was planning on an upside down front conversion but never sourced a suitable headstock. I will dig them out and list them in case anybody is looking.

I always do the comparison site thing and then phone a couple of the cheapest to get a quote for two bikes. It usually seems to be Hastings Direct or Bennetts for me these days. Hastings will only cover 2 bikes max I think Bennetts will cover up to 4. I have max NCD 9 years given but actually about 25 years since I had 7 years off bikes, 3 points for speeding and live in a town / semi rural location. I have comp with protected NCD declare I will do about 5000 miles per year but, to my shame, usually do a lot less. I include pillion cover but dont have breakdown, legal cover or any of the add ons.

Last year for a 2016 MT10 and a 2004 FZS1000. Hastings quoted £150. I would have gone with that but I bought a new Tracer 900GT in June and Hastings got a bit greedy with their quote so i went to Bennetts

Bennetts quoted £178 for 2016 MT10 and 2020 Tracer 900 GT. I didnt add the FZS 1000 as it is stored and to keep the the quotes like for like.

For Sale & Wanted / BMW S1000RR Shock
« on: 12 January 2016, 10:08:32 am »
BMW S1000RR Shock from 2013 bike.

Has been adapted to fit Fazer 1000 Gen 1. Will bolt straight on. I bought this from the US and it was fitted to my bike for about 500 miles last summer. Only removed as I lucked into a used Nitron shock at a good price.

It is far better than the standard shock and fits the same linkage. However at 13 stone I still found it a bit softly sprung for sporty riding so anyone heavier may want to get a heavier spring. There is a thread or two around with this modification and I think the american guy used a fireblade spring in his.

100 quid plus postage if anyone wants it.

Dont know if he is legit, I reckon he is on drugs. Personally, I would never buy a bike with even 4 owners but some folk do.

If I were advertising one I would be trying to emphasise my personal connection with it, mods I had made and talking about my experiences with it.

I dont want an advert that is a typed out HPI report I will be getting my own HPI report before I part with any cash.

« on: 06 September 2015, 09:07:08 pm »
I bought a one owner from new 5000 miles 04 (black engine model) for 2.5k in March 2014. Nice to have a totally std mint buke but I am not sure that is the way to go I have since spent:

300 quid Ivanise(Full Monty)
300 quid end can
250 quid on tyres
200 quid fork rebuild
300 rear shock replacement (Nitron)

Those are the essentials, and it still needs braided hoses and probably some better brake pads.

Non essentials

Hot grips
Renthal bars
Pazzo levers
R&G bar ends
R1 forks (not fitted yet)
Givi top box and rack

So my 2.5k bike stands me over 4.5k and likely over 5k before it is finished. It is worth, at best 3.5k and a bit from the saleable parts. I wont get my money back, for sure. Lucky I am keeping it but if you arent planning to, try to buy one that someone has already done the bulk of the work on.

« on: 30 August 2015, 10:11:16 pm »
I have been on two test rides of the Tracer it is the first jap bike I have been interested in for 5 years plus. My circumstances are a little unusual as I have a Superduke R for hooning around on and a Fazer 1000 Gen 1 for commuting and touring. I dont want to part with either bike so it is a case of buying another bike that can justify its place alongside them.

The Superduke is good fun on twisty roads and for blasting around country roads with my mates. However it is too uncomfortable to ride more than a hour at a time.

The fazer is a brilliant do anything bike but it is a touch heavy and lacks a little braking when really getting a move on. Plus it feels a little long in the tooth, it isnt but analogue clocks and right way up forks date it somewhat.

I tried a KTM990 SMT which was great but too much like the Superduke. Then tried a Triumph Tiger and Sprint 1050 which were nice to ride but felt heavy and poor build quality. A Z1000SX too vibey. A S1000XR too tall, too revvy and not enough wow for 14k. Both a 2013 and 2015 Multistrada I really want to like these and they are getting better but I just cant love it enough to pay 16k odd for one.

The MT09 Tracer is an absolutely brilliant bike it weighs nothing and encourages hooligan behaviour. I was straight onto gravel strewn single track roads which I would have hated to take my other bikes on and loved getting it sideways on them. I found it all day comfortable and the crossplane triple was a brilliant torquey motor than loves to rev. It can tour, commute, plod around town or rip around backlanes. You can take one offroad far easier than a KTM Adventure or Multistrada.

I havent bought one yet as they are only 9500 euros in Germany which works out 6500-7000 pounds at current exchange rates. I will wait until the new reg next week and then head over and buy one as soon as 1 pound gets back to 1.4 euro.

I am happy to shell out for steel brake hoses, a 700 quid Akrapovic full system (from Europe, 900 odd over here) plus a Nitron rear shock and a fork cartridge kit, plus an ECU reflash to remove the limiters in the top 2 gears. I reckon I could easily gain 5bhp anf shed 5kg in weight perhaps more. Especially if I chuck some carbon wheels on it. I reckon it will then be a match for any advebture styked bike on the market and close to a supermoto on tiny B roads.

Apart from the carb mods a bit of work goes into making the bike breathe better. Dead easy to find out. Take off tank and get you mouth really close to the airbox, shout Ivan and listen for the echo. If you hear Ivan,Ivan. Ivan, Iva, Iv, I it it means the mods have been done and your bike is Ivanised.

Dont ask me how you find out if yours has had a full monty.

Otherwise you could just ask Mike.

Dont buy anything Furygan. I did and it leaks like a sieve. The waterproof layer is the detachable bit with the quilted thermal liner on the inside. So it obviously never rains in the summer where the furygan designer lives.

I could take the thermal / waterproof liner with me everywhere but it is easier to put a thin waterproof overjacket on instead. I know this defeats the object of textiles and wont be buying any more Furygan crap. Nothing good ever came out of France.

Looks good. What lower yokes did you use? Was it a new steering stem you got made at a toolmakers or something else?  What do you reckon this mod has cost you in all, top yoke, lower yoke, steering stem, bearings, yoke extenders and machining costs?

Are the cables and brake lines the same or do they need changing?

I have forks ready but the rest of the project has gone on hold until I come back from France next week.

However, I have just stuck a Nitron shock on mine today. :D

Plus a pair of T30 Evo's  :D

Finally got it Dyno'd again after Mike's full monty job on it +7bhp  :D

One thing that may be holding mine back a bit is because it was a Tazz bike American import it hasa some kind of charcoal filter thingy behind the headers, perhaps an early attempt at a Cat Convertor? Is it possible / easy to remove this and what would be the gain to do so?

16
You are right Mike, cost does have to be considered so I have set my budget at 400-500 quid tops.

For 450 quid I can get a set of ready made billet yokes from ebay. With no adjustability, hopefully replicating the std bike's geometry but who knows? Made primarily for the shiny chrome streetfighter crowd. This guy is just replicating his original design so perhaps we can say 100 quid for materials and 350 quid for his time and profit.

Would they be strong enough, who knows? They are probably fine for those folk that ride 50 mph upright between bike shows, bulldog bash, mayday run etc. How they would cope if you are wanging it around a corner, find a tractor in your path and have to make a quick direction change on a potholed Uk road, not so sure.

But is it really cheaper to use various Yamaha bits off ebay? Not from what I have seem: Gen 2 top yoke with risers 100 quid, lower yoke about the same, steering stem 50 quid for a stock one you have to get machined or 100 quid for a custom one. Plus getting it all fitted together. I reckon you are still in for 450 quid ish.

Also you still dont know if what you have created is strong enough. All of those bits designed for other bikes were not designed to work together so again, do we really know if they would cope in an emergency. I accept that most of us are just doing this mod for our own use and will take our own chances but I wouldnt recommend lending a modified bike to a mate or selling it without putting it back to stock.

The only way I can get adjustable yokes designed and built withing budget is to find someone that does that type of work as a hobby / sideline. Those sort of people are involved in racing and particularly in Supermono where there are few restrictions on engineering. I have a few contacts in racing and they are all pointing me to the same people. If I can get them interested enough to take the project on I reckon I can keep it within budget....I hope :eek

Nah, I want the upside down forks and 5PW seem to be the best option as I can keep my standard brakes and wheel.

The next bit is interesting though as there are folks that have used 5PW lower yokes, 4c8 lower yokes and various other R1 lower yokes. None of them seem to know, or be willing to share, what offset or steering angle they have achieved. Then, even if they have this info they are stuck with what they have, they cant adjust anything. How without adjustable lower yokes,do we know what is optimum is?

Then we know that all the USD R1 forks are shorter than the RWU  FZS forks. There is a chart somewhere that tells us how much shorter that I have seen on here, I would be grateful if anyone has a link. Now general consensus is that this is a good thing as it puts the bike more on its nose, like a sports bike and I agree but again, what is optimum? And then what does optimum matter if you cant achieve it as the forks you bought are too short?

So if I can get someone to design a lower yokes with eccentric adjustment in the steering stem plus a stepped top yoke so that any ride height from std down to the more radical R1 settings can be achieved wouldnt that be a good thing? More so if they can make a  suitable steering stem from a drawing. Then make the fork holes oversize so they can be shimmed out to fit R1 forks but should you want to fit KTM forks in the future or use them on a different bike -not a problem.

So if anyone has a drawing of the steering stem that the american forum used I wquld be grateful.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / R1 Forks, Techical Stuff I dont Understand
« on: 23 May 2015, 07:45:43 pm »

Ok I have R1 forks (5pw) everything else is still a mystery. I was half inclined to buy a set of custom yokes and be done with it. The downside is that I will still have the same offset and sterring geometry on the std bike and I want it more on it's nose like a sports bike with handlebars.

One of the major benefits, to me, of this modification is to put the bike more on R1 geometry than its current its sedate steering.

I am pretty sure this can be achieved by using R1 lower yokes and a  Gen 2 top yoke but I dont have those bits and dont really know what years etc, plus I dont want to end up with a load of bits I may or may not be able to get someone more knowledgeable than me to splice together.I know Devilsyam was planning a solution with these bits but it wont happen unless 10 people commit and there is me and maybe another atm.So today I have been chasing up some racing contacts in the Supermono mob and have found some guys that will make adjustable yoke sets, knock me up a steering stem and programme the lot into their CAD database incase anyone else wants the same done in the future. So, what I need is a drawing or measurements of the adjusted FZS steering stem if anyone has one. Also, the angles of rake and trail that can be achieved with the R1 lower yoke set up.In an ideal world we will end up with a correctly specced bottom yoke that can adjust from the std offset to the most extreme R1 offset available, plus a stepped top yoke that offers the current fazer ride positon plus a variety of sportier alternatives. None of this will happen without your input as I know nothing.

38-250-XX springs and 1.0kg/mm for a firm setup.

Thanks for that. I have standard 2008 RC8 springs kicking around the garage as we put the RC8R cartridge kit in mine. However, I am guessing these springs willl be in the 2002/3 R1 forks anyway, unless it transpires the forks have been upgraded in the past?

Think I will get the refreshed anyway as the oil might be 12 yrs old by now and take a view on springs once we know what is in there.

After half a dozen unsuccessful bids I have finally got a set of R1 5PW forks for my front end conversion. They are gold, and black would have looked better but otherwise happy days.

Anyway, I am likely to be waiting a while for either a custom yoke set or for Devilsyam's steering stem so I am thinking of getting the forks sent off for set up. I know it would be best to wait until they are fitted but it would be great to have everything in place so I the bike is useable as soon as it is bolted together.

Has anyone running R1 forks done this? Did you need to go up or down from std springs? I have the std FZS forks set up with 9.5nm springs  and weigh about 13 st with kit.

Been to a few forum group trackdays. The only one where everyone turned up with the bike they was the first couple of Superduke crash fest at Cadwelll. We did one with Aprilia owners at Brands and most of them were riding assorted trackbikes of non Aprilia origin, same with the Ducati mob.

The Fazer is a big old girl for trackriding, I doubt I would chose it over the Superduke i also own TBH. I got the Fazer as I dont do so many trackdays now and wanted something a bit more comfortable for road riding.
