Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Fazer1000 gen1 suspension upgrade
« on: 01 August 2014, 07:27:16 pm »
I put hyperpro front and rear springs on my gen 1 to cope with varying loads (solo vs luggage/pillion) and it made the bike ride a lot better. Obviously not as good as a complete suspension rebuild but for a couple of hundred quid well worth it. Also put a taper roller bearing in the head while it was apart. Supposed to be better than the standard ball race.

MEZ4s are the worst tyres ever! Yamaha might have sold loads more FZSs if they hadn't speccedv them with MEZ4s from new! Best thing I ever did was replace them even though they were hardly worn. And when they do wear they develop a little ridge in the middle of the front which makes it fell like you're riding on marbles!

Oh well I'm glad to hear that not everyone thinks 30k+ is the end of the line! My 54-plate gen 1 has got about 32k on it and has never missed a beat. Some engine paint flaking off at the front but otherwise all good. If matey with the 40k bike gets asked if he'll sell maybe I should put mine up for sale!

Its a thing we all will face at some point. I have owned gen1s since 2001, when I bought my blue Y plate. Did 38k on that. Sold it for sprint 1050 in 2005, quickly realised it wasn't  a direct replacement. Bought another gen1 in 2008 with just 8k on clock. That now has 42k up, and just been serviced , including some work by dealer. Who praised the bikes power and handling. That's 1990s technology against 2014 current bike range....so it kinda makes one think 2 questions ...
1. Is there a bike out there to replace the fazer ...kwak sx1000?...maybe new s1000R ( faired)...whadya think ?

2.If not , how long will it keep running ?...my only concern is the exup valve, as dealer reckons its wearing , and is reluctant to touch it ! I can see some rethreading being needed this year ( again ! )..it still works , but is getting loose due to end wear. But that could be a blessing in disguise...as it wont probably seize.

Hey Jon, I'm pretty much the same. I put about 38ish on my lovely blue '02 one, traded it for a 54 plate with 8k on also in 2008. That also now has about 32k (or is it 36?) on it, but I'm starting to feel the urge for something different. I wondered about the Zed Thou SX but in the end I decided to get something totally different as a "second" bike tha would be a bit lighter and easier to thread through rush hour traffic in central London. Ended up with a Street Triple R. Nothing like the power of the Fazer, or the luggage capacity, but more suited to the kind of riding I do these days, and a lot smaller and lighter. Haven't really ridden the Fazer much this year, so in spite of new chain and sprocket, and barely used tyres, I'm thinking of letting her go. Feel a bit sad about it really as I've had Gen 1s for so long, but can't justify 2 bikes any more. It's amazing what a contender the old Fazer still is though – I just watched Sadlonelygit's track video!

Very nice! Not often I sit through 16 minutes of someone else having all the fun, but that was ace! I was like "go on, 'ave 'im!"
Amazing to think of what these bikes can do in the right hands (i.e not mine LOL!)

Nice bike  :D  esp liking the crash bungs , how much and where did you get ?

Cheers Jason. Most people think my bungs are a bit weird, but I like them because on long trips I get stiff legs and these bungs are knurled and not conical so they make an ideal place to rest your feet on for a bit when on the Autobahn. They are actually a custom job, the bungs themselves fit on to the back plates of the Yamaha accessory crash bungs. I just removed the black plastic conical bungs and bolted these on in their place.
They were made for me by Justy, don't know if he's still got the prototypes knocking around?

Well, I'm not the expert either, but I think if you actually do have an issue with your timing chain, you would first hear rattling, then more engine vibration than normal. Once it slips a tooth that can result in the valves dropping and hitting the pistons. If that happens you would lose a lot of power and shortly afterwards the engine will die and never start again. You may also get backfires. It happened to my car (which had a belt snap). Chains don't snap generally (less often than belts anyway) but if the tensioner fails then the chain can easily jump and wreck your top end.

Seems worrying that the mechanics in country didn't want to get involved, so maybe it really is the timing chain.

There is a thread on here not very long ago where someone had a cam chain tensioner fail twice. He'd be in a good place to tell you the exact symptoms on a Fazer.

With my bike (2004, 32,000 miles), I had a problem where I rode down to the Nürburgring and back with no problem, parked the bike up for a couple of weeks, and when I came to start it, the engine wouldn't fire and was turning over so fast I thought it was that the starter clutch had failed (see recent thread). Bump starting wouldn't work either. Turned out it was turning the engine over (I could feel gases at the exhaust) but it had lost compression due to the oil draining out of the bores and the rings getting stuck in a 'loose' position. Thank goodness this turned out to be the case, and was fixable.

The only reason I mention this is because the cause (long ride on old-ish engine followed by a lay-up) and the symptoms (lack of compression, not starting) could be confused with a timing chain issue at first glance.

2004. Pic taken after I junked the old Blue Flame Evo for a nice carbon Mivv.

Other mods are Renthal 758s and Oberon s/s weights, heated grips, comedy stick-on blind spot mirrors, trimmed rear number plate holder, triboseat, belly pan, Hyperpro springs front and rear, some kind of double bubble screen of unknown make, Pazzo levers and some custom crash bungs by Justy that are knurled ally so you can rest your feet on long trips.

Well I'm nowhere near. I had a 2002 bike that I bought in 2004. Put maybe 30,000 miles on it and decided to buy a really clean 2004 plater in 2008 when I realised my old faithful was getting a bit scruffy and I didn't want a gen 2. Have since put another 24,000 onto the 8k that was on it. I'm looking after this one…

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: cooling?
« on: 27 August 2013, 11:23:55 pm »
That's normal behaviour from a gen 1 Thou. The fan comes on after a couple of minutes idling (well before engine temp gets hot enough to make the light come on) and stops when you put it in gear. It will then subsequently only come on if the coolant temperature reaches a certain point (such as when stuck in traffic on a hot day). I think the light only comes on if the temp gets "into the red zone" or if there is insufficient coolant.

Well, you were right. My '3M' (mechanically-minded mate) came over for a pint and fish'n'chips and as soon as we turned it over he said it's lack of compression due to dry bores. He reckoned that the rings can get stuck in their compressed state as the pistons cool after a long run and the oil drains down, especially if there's a little bit of carbon making them tight in their grooves. That can be enough to lower the compression to the point of no starting.

The 'quick fix' that worked for us was just to hook it up to my car and jump it. Once I revved up the car to the point it was kicking out decent amperage the bike caught. Jeff reckoned this is quite common but a bike battery, even fully charged, can't do it. He said turning the engine over fast enough draws oil up from the sump and also can generate enough heat and vibration to help the sticky rings pop out again and restore full compression.

Anyway, whatever the intimate details, seems that solved it! Thank goodness it wasn't the starter clutch, I was fooled by the speed at which it was turning over. You live and learn. Gotta love forums and the guys who share their knowledge.

Cheers Mike, I'll give that a go. Could that be responsible for it not starting? I rode 1000 miles on it at the end of July with no problems.

Just tried to bump it again – still nothing, though there was enough compression to make it drag the rear wheel when in 1st. I then thumbed the starter again and it made the normal "attempting to start" sound (i.e. I think it fired but didn't catch). Tried again but it was back to the higher-sounding fast turnover. It's very strange, but at least I think we've established it's not the starter clutch, which I'm told is 3-4 hrs labour and £250 parts.

Thanks mate, I believe there are 2 coils, so I don't think it's them.
I've tried connecting and disconnecting various connectors and checked the fuses (including the main 30A one in the other box) and it doesn't seem to be that.

I'm not really very good with electrics so might have to call out a mobile mech.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Starter clutch?
« on: 27 August 2013, 03:30:10 pm »
Hi chaps, some of you will know me from the other FZS1000 forum, but it's a bit quiet over there these days so I thought I'd post here.

Got a bit of bother with the old faithful. (Gen 1, 2004, 31,000ish miles)
I rode down to Germany recently with absolutely no issues, parked the bike up in the garage and haven't ridden it for a couple of weeks. Went to start it the other day and all I got was the starter motor whirring away but nothing from the engine at all.

It sounds to my (untrained) ears as if the starter clutch might be sticking/knackered. I don't remember ever reading about anyone else having this though. Seems unusual but I'm a bit worried it's going to have me off the road for a bit as it sounds like it's probably an expensive thing to fix. Anyone know anything about this?

Many thanks for any constructive replies! Worried this might bankrupt me.

***EDIT***

I might be wrong about this. Just tried again and I got a big backfire, so I checked and it seems that vapours are coming out of the exhaust when I turn it over. But it seems to turn over quite easily with no spark. Might not be the starter clutch. Tried bump starting it. In 1st there's loads of compression, in 2nd it turns over well enough but still seems as if there's no spark. I've checked the little fuse box but they all seem ok. The plug caps are all properly seated and all the other electrics seem to work OK. Got a full tank of fuel. Carb is probably flooded now from me trying.

Any ideas what I need to try next?

Here's mine just after fitting the Mivv I got off one of the forum guys. Well chuffed. One-off crash bungs/foot rests by Justy. Nice to stretch out on during a long journey or when overtaking Harleys!

In action at a certain well-known location in Germany.

I had the same issue (fork comp screws) on my first (02) gen 1. Was the first thing I checked as soon as I was out of sight of the dealer's when I test rode my current one (54). Take a flat screwdriver with you when you go to see it. But yes, they don't really do much anyway! Suspension is probably the only thing that lets down one of the best all-rounders you can get. Being a cheapskate, I just went for a Hyperpro respring front and rear, which helped, but is no substitute for a proper revalve on the front and a Maxton/K-Tech/Nitron shock, so I'm told.

When buying, one tip is to check for vertical play in the swingarm (bike on centre stand, lift rear wheel). About 1mm of play is actually within spec but lots of people don't realise this so you can bargain to get some £ knocked off, or if in a dealer, get the bearings and linkages repacked, which will need doing anyway at some point.

The engines go on for ever if you change your oil regularly. Stripping and greasing the EXUP should be done at least once a year. Make sure the EXUP valve works (and bolts aren't seized) before you part with any cash. It has been known for people to remove the pulley and flog the bike with a stuck valve.

Apart from that, nothing much to watch out for really, except the same as when buying any other bike.

Oh, and it's worth mentioning that I've just hit 30,000 miles on my 54 plater on the original chain and sprockets, due to using a Scottoiler. Replaced with DID ZVM and JT sprockets for £170 fitted.

I know what you mean about just having to get out. We went for a blast down to Brighton (from Bagshot) yesterday. It was great just to get out, roads were damp and sketchy to start with but got better. I was also very glad of my Gerbing gloves!

Unfortunately (I noticed you mentioned brand new Pirellis), one of the lads on a brand new Street Triple just lost it on the way into a roundabout. No brakes, no diesel, the front just washed out and he wasn't even going quick. We had only been going 5 minutes, so the tyres were stone cold. He'd done about 800 miles on these tyres (Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa), but due to the crap weather they weren't properly scrubbed in, and the "chicken strips" on the front were like most of the tyre. Anyway, they looked and felt like shiny hard plastic so I'm kind of not surprised he lost the front. Just saying, be careful out there!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: BT023 Vs PR3

I've had 020s, 021s and 023s on my Thous, and Conti Road Attacks. Currently got Pilot Road 3s.
020s were a million times better than the OEM Metzeler MEZ4s (not difficult - worlds worst tyre)/ I took them round Snetterton and bobbled them up nicely.
021s were grippier than the 020s but didn't last as long
023s were somehow a mix of the two, warmed up fairly quickly, nice neutral profile, OK in wet. Lasted maybe 8000 (rear)

Only had the MPR3s for a couple of thousand miles, but they are really nice. Neutral and confidence inspiring, look hardly worn after about 2000 miles, warm up in about 500 yards or something, and are really good in the wet (which does matter to me). They do look a bit odd with their wet weather tread pattern, seems to attract comments - some love the look some hate it. So long as they do the job I don't care! I would say they're my favourite tyre yet, but then I don't push them as hard as, say, Pitternator.

I'm not a knee-down demon, more of a commuter/tourer/backroads Sunday blaster, but as someone said, the tyres we commute on nowadays are better than what Barry Sheene and Eddie Lawson raced on back in the day, so you pays yer money and takes yer choice.

BTW Mike, I think the BT020 suffix/nomenclature was 'U' IIRC.

Some ham-fisted muppet had used my toolkit plug spanner to try to undo the front wheel (I assume) and it's knacked. However I managed to use a socket with a long bar and a swivel joint on it, plus one of those bendy grabber thingies. Replaced all 4 plugs without an issue. See pics:

I've just replaced the chain on my Gen 1 at 29,000 miles. TBH it wasn't completely sha**ed but the gear changing had started to get awkward and it had a bit of a tight spot. I just decided I was happy to have got so many miles out of a chain and treated the old girl to the absolutely top spec gold DID x-ring - should get another 29 out of that. Changes gear much sweeter now too. I'm surprised the chain has as much effect on that as it does.
