Another ebay waste of my diesel
« on: 23 June 2014, 11:47:37 pm »
After the debacle of the ducati owner who wouldn't make an effort to be home to sell me the bike, tonight we had the R1 that wouldn't rev over 9k.
I think it's going to be biketrader only from now on

It's a minefield innit, that old zed I bought out of classic bikes had about a million things wrong with it, and had been mot't the day before I bought it from the crafty " nice old feller type"lying b@stard git...
Worse thing he did was let me ride it the forty miles home with the threads in both front calipers gone so unbeknown to me if I had grabbed a big handful of brake in would have been messy to say the least.. If he hadn't of been 70 years old he would have had a return visit for that. There's good bikes out there, it's just finding them.

I bought a project off eBay - it was sold as 'working but needs a new starter motor'. Well, anyway, I got the starter motor working after a decent clean out and new seals. But I'm thankful I had always planned to strip the bike down and put it back together piece by piece (after painting etc). Last night I stripped the frame down to its bare bones, and I'm so glad I bought it and not someone who would have jumped on and rode the thing. There was barely a tight nut on the whole bike (and those that were only were due to rust), and the amount of incorrect nuts/bolts/screws - I'd take something off held on with 2 bolts and one would be a 10mm and the other a 12mm, or one would be a 14mm and the other would be a philips head. Not the worst thing in the world, but just stinks of DIY bodgit.

Anyway, frame stripped - time to grind the tabs off and have it painted.

It's unreal what some people can live with just to sell a bike. No conscience whatsoever. When I took out the wheels to. Paint them, this was the sprocket carrier bearing...no only was it bolloxed, but it had been for a long time, no trace of the missing metal and liberally engorged in grease..it was obvious someone  had seen it and put it back in albeit with shit loads of grease...everything had a story..took the Genny cover off to polish it and put a new gasket on to cure it's oil leak.. The bloke had snapped one of the screws in the stator windings, then tried to force the Genny cover back on and put a small fracture in it hence the oil leak...45 quid for another cover in the end though I've had the old one repaired as a spare....similar to you I ended up checking the whole bike. The only thing that had no issues was the lump and the carbs..just got them back together and was amazed there was no superglued diaphragms etc.. They were sound.
Sadly, this bike is gonna be one sorted old girl by the time it's painted, but I gotta sell it to fund my paint course and compressor and tools. I've lost count if the hours I've put into it, it's a foccer I can't keep it.. :(

Ooh that would have been bad nogster... Years and years ago I used to swap one tax disc between my escort car and escort van..got stopped in the van and done for it..no fixed penalty....had to attend court because it's fraud against customs and excise and carries a possible jail sentence! Shit me self in truth...didn't get banged up but got far more severe fine than if I'd had no tax. Serious shit. I'm sure it wasn't the sellers intention but repercussions for you would have been very, very bad

Think yourself lucky you aren't buying stuff from the States.  For a country where everyone seems to want to sue everyone else at the slightest opportunity, it appears you can put anything you like in an ad for a car or bike.  I'm involved, with a couple of friends, in importing cars and the odd bike from the States that are destined for France.  As the French are such a pain in the arse (witness Christo if you think I'm joking), they normally get MoT'd and registered here before going to France to be stripped, fully restored and then sold on.  We bought an E Type Jag that was described as "mechanically sound but may benefit from some minor cosmetics".  I nearly didn't take a trailer to the docks to pick it up, just a can of petrol and a battery pack but thought better of it.  Now to me, mechanically sound means that the engine starts, runs and the car can be driven not that it had been hurriedly bolted back together to be sold by someone who had obviously lost interest or ran out of money.  Carbs that were seized solid due to having been stored somewhere wet, no fuel lines, engine electrics, brake pipes, battery, clutch lines, water hoses and an engine that appeared to be seized.  That one wasn't MoT'd but just sold on as is.

Latest that I picked up a few weeks ago was a 1969 Triumph Bonneville.  Again described as running but when I got it the oil tank was attached with a couple of tie wraps, no oil or fuel pipes, all electrics disconnected, no rectifier or Zener, etc.  Once I'd got the oil system connected up and pushed it up and down the garden with no plugs in it for ages to get the oil circulated, I tried to get it to start.  After about 2 hours of the odd backfire or spit back through the carbs I discovered that the ignition coils were connected arse about face so it never could have run.  Eventually got it into a state where it could be tested but came to the conclusion that something described by some as the pinnacle of British motorcycle engineering is probably the reason for the demise of the British motorcycle industry.

Yep someone on here im afraid...not with mega posts but still seemingly legit & all that....im actually considering messaging him just incase there has been a genuine mistake........but really speaking doesnt the evidence speak for itself in this case...fact is the thou wasnt taxed so not like the discs just got mixed up.....i should have checked it but when you see all the discs in chronological order in the book you just take it for granted that they are for the bike.

Ok so it isnt the worst sin ever and im just glad the bike is pretty solid and hasn't broke down on me....theres a few snipped wires on the left handlebar which look dubious...ive replaced a spring on the ASV levers which just got worn out and snapped.... but apart from that the bike is great.......but it is just these little things get you worrying and they tarnish the buy.

This is why my next bike i will buy new....or nearly new via a dealer....ive already decided that....even if it is a lesser bike.

Never managed to do it myself.  Probably because I haven't put the tax disc on the bike in about 5 years, I keep it in my bike jacket pocket.....

You can check via gov website, not sur how much a replacement disc is but probably cheaper that a ticket if you park it up and an over zealous traffic warden spots it.....worth checking in case ANPR picks it up
