If I ask to be notified for updates to a topic I get a hyperlink which directs me to the site.  It would be handy if it contained the comment which had been added as well.  This would mean a slight reduction in site traffic (possibly making the site quicker too) but people would still log on/in to respond or get context for the topic.

Every now and then, probably more than once a week, I get an email from someone replying to a PM notification. I'm sure that if the comment was in the new post notification then people would reply to these too. So it's switched off :)
