Weekly Insurance
« on: 06 May 2013, 12:48:53 pm »
So, I've just bought this second bike which I'm probably going to rob the best bits off and then sell on.

I'll either have to insure it, or declare it SORN and lose 5 months road tax (and sell it as SORN which doesn't look as attractive as taxed).

Anybody ever taken out something like a weekly policy for a bike they own (as opposed to borrowed)?

I only pay £80/yr TPFT on my 600, but that's with a stack of no claims discount.

Any thoughts appreciated.

You can send the tax disc back for a refund (which I've done at least a half dozen times in the past 9 months) and then re-tax it when you get round to selling it :)

Can't re-tax it unless it's insured, can I?  Used to be able to do it with a cover note mind :)

Re-tax it online with just the v5 number or reminder note number. No insurance required as far as I remember

Insurance is 100% required to tax a vehicle, not only that but if you want to tax online it takes more than a day for databases to update insurance details.

A cover note from the the insurance plus v5 and a visit to the post office is quickest way to do it.

I just went through all this on Saturday picking up an untaxed bike btw so I know its correct!

When taxing a vehicle online they can check MID for insurance, (it has to be insured) you now cannot keep an uninsured vehicle taxed you must cash tax in and sorn it. HTH.

If you worried about falling off your bike, you'd never get on.

See how much it is to add it to your existing policy. Some companies only charge £10 to add a lower risk bike.

One days van insurance was £28 for my son, cash the tax in, it won't make that much difference to the resale value, save all the hassle.

Thanks for the replies, I'm going to cash the tax in and SORN it.

As I understand you can't do that at a post office, you have to send the disc to DVLA?  Does that cause problems if the old owner is slow sending in the V5 to be changed?
