Hi all

recommendations for roadside puncture kits that actually work and gotta be able to fit under seat on a gen 1.

These are good.
Only thing you have to be careful of is that over time the glue can go off. It'll be a long time though as it's not exactly something you'll use often unless you're unlucky (like me).

When you push the rubber strip into the tyre with the eye tool how come it doesn't just pull it out again as its threaded through the eye

+1 for the Stop'n'go. No glue to mess about with. Has got me out of trouble on two occasions. You could either carry sparklets to get the tyre inflated, then go to a garage to fully inflate and check the pressure. Or do as several members do, and carry as small 12v pump, which can be plugged into a cigar type lighter, an optimate lead, or clipped across the battery.

I use that style plug. Never had a problem with them. If you look very closely at the picture in the ad, the tool for pushing the plug into the tyre is split at the end so as you pull the tool out the plug is pulled through the gap in the tool and remains in the tyre

I use Crafty Plugger, it’s a really small kit that uses mastic-covered cord.
Bridgestone tyres and taking care to keep the bike on the cleaner bits of the road has meant punctures are a rarity for me. However, I’ve a PR3 on the rear at the moment and that did get holed a couple of years back. I was intending to take the tyre off and put a mushroom in, but never got round to it… the tyre’s holding up fine still.
Not sure if the company is still in business though, the website looks a bit unmaintained.
As for the pump, I didn’t fancy relying on an electric one that’s going to spend years under the seat before needed so opted for a compact bicycle pump.

A couple of years go, the local IAM Group did a session with Russ Tappenden of Russ' Tyres down here in Portsmouth to try out a bunch of these kits.

We found that, after several different tries, the Stop and Go kit was by far the most reliable out of all the ones we tried which included the "sticky cord" and Cargol "Twist and Go" versions.

Do a search on eBay, chances are your local bike shop will only have their own preferred makes ( Or whatever the salesman has pushed onto them)

On some of them, the bradawl pushes the plugging material in, then when you pull it back out the inner part of the bradawl is shaped like a blade so cuts the plug as you pull it.

I still use a very old school version which my brother gave me probably 20+ years ago, and the plug is actually rubber bootlace, which i cover in glue.

The Sportsbike online shop sell the Cargol turn & go kits. They've not had any reviews yet tho. I like buying from them. Reliable and great service.

Does turn & go work well?. Would you recommend?.

Had to use them twice over the years. Got me the 300 miles home last time. Keep them screwed into the covers until you need them.

When we tried it out a couple of times, on one attempt it didn't plug the hole properly and was the equivalent of a slow puncture. It probably would have got you home ok if you'd kept the speed down and weren't going too far, but it was only a temporary fix*

Also, of course, it only works on round holes, if they're elongated or oval, it wouldn't work.

* I would put the usual caveat here that any roadside repair is only a temporary fix until you've had the tyre checked properly as there could be damage to the inside of the carcass that isn't visible.

Oh and if you have the FZ6, it's *really* not a good idea to put the CO2 cylinders under the seat as it can get rather warm with the under-seat pipes and they have a recommended safety temperature of 50 degrees!

I've bought one of the little pumps which I can connect up to the Optimate charger lead

Would never consider any roadside repair a permanent fix, only a get you home fix.
I always permanently repair with a mushroom patch on when I get home as long as I didn't use the Tyre Weld.
I always carry a can of Holts Tyre Weld wrapped in Black Duct tape and cable tied to the underneath of the top box rack just in case.
Almost invisible when wrapped with black duct tape.

Rema Tip Top Tyre Puncture Repair Kits, they supply BMW as standard. Not permanent repair but will get you going again, I've known them to last the rest of a touring trip no bother.

Mini digital electric air pump with croc connectors to attach to the battery, which I test every couple of months just to make it will work if and when I need it!!

Just check that it does the job on your tyre valves!

I had the OEM ones replaced with 90 degree valves to make it easier to use garage forecourt pumps, but I didn't realise that repeatedly pushing the air hose on and pulling it off would wear the threads a little.

When I tried to use the pump above, it's designed to screw into place, but it wouldn't grip on the worn threads!

Fortunately it was easy enough to get them switched over and it works ok now, however it's only really a "get you going again" system and you still really need to get to a garage to inflate your tyres to full pressure.
