Some info in this thread
Also not just a few days of plusgas - go for a few weeks and but on after each ride when warm.
Fazersharp, I think you forgot to include the link there....?

But thanks for the plusgas tip

Hi all,

Just had the bike through it's MOT.

Only thing that cropped up was a slight blow on the downpipe collector under the engine.  Garage put some sealant on for me but it's going to need replaced.  Time for some nice stainless steel downpipes (still got the original mild steel ones on it).

So recommendations for the downpipes sought?  Delkevic and Motad have both been  mentioned in the past.  Is one better at fitting than the other?  Better quality, etc  Which of those tow, or another brand, do you recommend?

Secondly, as I'm unable to do the work myself due to some medical issues (Shoulder surgeries plus other things) , can anyone recommend me a good place to take it to get the exhaust work done?  Anywhere in North or Central Bristol would be ideal, as that's where I'm based.

(I'm giving up on my current garage as they've made one or two slip ups in the past, one left me with no front brakes when I rode off after a tyre change, the other left me with no power doing 70 in the outside lane of a dual carriageway (they forgot to reconnect the fuel tank after an air filter change during a service)

The fiancée was less than happy about that last one as she was a few cars behind me on the dual carriageway and got the fright of her life as I was dodging traffic to pull in.

I also intend to pick up some PlusGas or similar to help loosen the nuts on the exhaust and treat the bike to it for a good few days before I take it anywhere to have the work done, might as wel try and make it easy for the mechanic eh?  Anyone make any recommendations on what or where to get it?

So any recommendations for downpipes, Bristol mechanics, PlusGas?

Thanks to the group mind for letting me pick it's brains

I have a 55 litre Givi E3 Box on my FZS600, so no I don't think yours is too big.

Thanks Darrsi, that worked a treat.

Still some vibration in that rev range, but then so is the whole bike.  At least the screen is no longer buzzing like a 2-stroke is chasing me :)

Check all engine mounting bolts are okay, loose or broken bolts, or unbalanced carbs, are the main causes of vibration.

Oh she's fine, I may be over conveying the amount of vibration, just normal engine running stuff, nothing abnormal at all.

but thanks for the pointers, I have checked the engine mounts before today.

check the mirror carefully, i broke mine off in a crash but after looking at it it turned out only the screw inside where it pivots had sheared off, was an eaasy fix

Oh the mirror needs replaced, it was sheared off near the mounting point of the mirror.

I got the paerts today, took the old screen off, fitted the new mirror, refitted the LHS mirror to sort the loose rubber on that side.  Fitted the new screen , started up and noticed a vibration in the screen between 2 and 3 k rpm, tried adjusting the screen screws and managed to shear the head off one.  Fortunately I managed to get the thread out nof the hole, and have ordered these on Ebay

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SCREEN-BOLT-KIT-YAMAHA-FZS600-FAZER-97-99-6-BOLT-BLACK-ALUMINIUM-/291008769324?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item43c1796d2c

Oddly, after I did all that I noticed the vibration is less when the bike is off the stand, so we'll see what happens.  The replacement screen is a bit more scuffed than mine, but doesn't have a massive crack, maybe next time I drop a screen I'll get a slightly dearer one off Ebay that looks better, though this one looked fine on Ebay.  It took a bit of coercing into position, i think it's been out of a bike for too long.

Hopefully the new nuts will improve the vibration.

Needless to say I was being v careful putting the bike on to the centre stand today.

Thanks all for your help

Well if my guess is right, based on the number of Royal Mail cards through my door, the mirror, screen and the first of the GF's Xmas pressies are all waiting for me at the local sorting office, yay!  Just in time for evening opening tomorrow!!!

Just a question about the action of the choke lever...mine seems to do nothing until it gets about 1/2 through it's total travel.  It's not really an issue as I can still push it all the way and it revs up to 4k or so, just wondering if it's supposed to be that way.

Don;t know about "supposed to be" but that's how mine is

After experimentation with starting my bike in the recent cold and wet weather, my Fazer likes full choke to start and no throttle whatsoever. About 3-5 seconds after it starts, the revs die down so much (around 1k or just under) that it sounds in danger of stalling -- but it doesn't. It was at this point I was previously giving it a bit of throttle but this floods the engine making it stall and difficult to start again for about 30 minutes. So I resist the throttle and after a few more seconds the revs pick up to 2-3k and I can start reducing the choke.

Added this in case any other noobie like me has the same problems starting a cold, soggy Fazer.

Yup, that's what I find is working, max choke, no throttle, push the button till it starts and let it settle before adjusting anything.

Thanks to you both.

I ended up finding the cheapest second hand original screen I could on ebay as there were three I could find, and all else being equal, get the cheap one.  at least I didn't need the fixings.

Mirror has shipped from WeMoto so with luck I'll have it for the late night Wed pickup at the sorting office.  Screen will be coming Parcelforce which is a pain as that means an out of town depot.  Don't want to ride the bike without a replacement mirror, even if it is legal it ain't safe.

I was in the garage, putting it up on the centre stand after a wash, and when righting it to go on the centre stand, I righted her too far and she went over.  Crashed into some metal shelves, top box scraped the wall, jammed the shelf upright between the brake lever and the right handlebar.  Couldn't budge her.

A swift call to my mate a fellow FZS600 rider to come and helpme lift her and the damage became apparent.

Right mirror sheared off.
Crack on the windscreen starting at the top and extending for a few inches down.
Possible additional scraping to the RHS fairing (there was some already)
Definite scraping to the GIVI top box
Possible further damage to the existing crack in the fairing near the mirror mount on the RHS.

Possible slight cosmetic damage, the engine bars never came into play, the shelf jam and the top box kept the pegs and exhaust off the ground, indicator never touched anything.  all the electrics  work and the brakes actuate fine.

Thankfully I'm ok, and all the bike needs is a new RHS mirror (Vicma OEM one already ordered from WeMoto, about £23 inc shipping) and I need to decide whether or not to get a new screen.  I would like to.

I have the original screen, which is fine for me, I'm obviously the right shape for it.  WeMoto make them to order:

http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/yamaha/fzs_600_fazer/98-99/picture/screen_as_standard/

I'm just not sure whether to get one of theirs or pick up a second hand one off Ebay

Another thing, the original screen is not clear, obviously.  WeMoto do 4 colours, clear, light tint, dark tint and solid black.  I don't think clear is the way to go, I'd rather not have black, so I'm wondering if anyone knows which is clearer to the original colouring, light or dark tint.

But any advice on where to get a replacement screen would be appreciated, and tips on getting a decent match to the colour of the original.

The main thing is I'm annoyed at myself for it happening, but as my dad and bro said, "bikes get dropped, it's how gravity works" :)

Thanks

Side note:

At least she's starting okay now(My problem last week) , the problem seems to have been me not giving her enough choke in the cold weather.  My Dad's idiot instructions were "Full Choke, no throttle, press the button till she starts.  Honda started doing it that way in the 70s and it's only gotten better since"

If the battery is low or old then leaving it idle in cold weather may have just been the final straw.
As the Dude says, you could always try bumping it, but if you're charging the battery my guess is it'll probably start okay next time.
You need to speak to Red98 about your girlfriends stutter.  :rollin :rollin :rollin

yep....iam good with stutters....send her down for the weekend and i`ll see what i can do  :lol :lol ....classic symptoms of flooding and low battery....she`ll be fine now, suggest you get out and use it more, the bike not your girlfriend  :lol

LOL!

I did try a bump start before i posted here, used to do it on my CG225 all the time, but the road outside isn't steep enough to get enough speed, steep enough to be a pain to push the bike back up though :)

Thanks again

3 and a half hours on charge while I went into town on the bus (I feel so dirty ;)) and she started first time.

No clicks from the fuel pump, the carbs were probably still overflowing.

Battery has always been fine, but this is the coldest and longest between starts I've ever had since I got the bike in April.

Best theory, I flooded the bike, then in my continued attempts to start her I drained the battery too low to be of use.

All being well the bike will be fine unless I screw up again.

Thanks all for your help and advice, but for the sake of my relationship with the gf I will NOT be showing her your comments lol

« on: 15 November 2013, 02:35:38 pm »
Today let gf start bike under observation. But I forgot to use choke. Bike had been laid up for a fortnight.  She started but then stuttered.  Added throttle and choke but the bike died. Now despite being left for a good half hour she won't start.

Tried normal choke. No choke with no throttle,  no choke full throttle.  She coughs once but won't pick up. Left the battery charging and will try her again tomorrow morning.

I hope I've just flooded it but any advice or other suggestions welcome.

Thanks

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Stripped thread swingarm mounting point for hugger
« on: 17 September 2013, 08:07:01 pm »
you did use a nyloc (or split washer if people get pedantic about nyloc's not being locking nuts  :D )  didn't you ? ;)

Hmm....... :eek   I mean yes of course, I didn't just nip out and add one on the end right under the nut.... ;)

Thanks for the tip

So now it goes bolt head and then the bolt passes through, in order from the outside in:

Penny washer, tax disc holder, rubber washer, hugger hole, swingarm hole, penny washer, spring washer, nut

All nicely tightened, will check periodically, after my next ride, I'm still laid up with a tummy virus.

At least I know I'm lubing the chain enough, my right forearm is covered in it from the chain, rear sprocket and rear wheel hub. Swarfega for the win :)

Thanks for the help all

Bore and retap later is my plan, but in the meantime I want to get out on ti and see if my washers and new bolt method worked.  Should do.

At the moment I'm laid up with some vomiting bug, the boiler has packed up and it's cold with no hot water.  waiting in for a boiler man, hoping he doesn't arrive mid bout of vomiting

FZS600 Fazer / Stripped thread swingarm mounting point for hugger
« on: 16 September 2013, 10:38:30 am »
So this weekend when I fitted my new trax disc and holder, I managed to strip the thread on the swingarm where the hugger attaches.

Managed to sort it with a 10mm bolt and a washer on both sides with a 10mm nut on the back end.  Thankfully the bolt was short enough not to foul the sprocket.

Thankfully I had a 10mm stubby spanner to tighten the nut on the back, barely had enough room to get the ring spanner off between the boolt and the sprocket.  Only after I finished did I realise that that is what the open end of a spanner is for !!!! D'Oh!

I'll probably retap the thread sometime in the future, unless the next time I ride I discover that the tax disc is loosening.

The mocking may now commence :)

« on: 06 September 2013, 01:10:35 am »
Well I went out on the bike last night, a little bimble round Southmead and up to Cribbs and back in Bristol.  Nothing faster than 50, but it felt good to be back in the saddle.

My bro got a shot on it too, he likes the bike, and just like my Dad, he told me the reason I'm having rough gear changes is all down to me, he says the gearbox is the best he's ever ridden.  D'oh!

My bro also opened the taps a little on the M5 to check the bhike out after the 8 week lay up.  Nice of him wasn't it? :)

So asuming my shoulder continues to take it, back to my evening and weekend riding, yay!  Thanks for all the support guys

A mate with an FZS600 recommended Kellaway Motorcycles, which is near me, so I'm sorted for garages.  Main problem is Speedway was one of the best dealers to go looking for affordable motorbikes near me, what do I do for my next bike?  A problem I'll solve assuming I survive this one, still need to get back in the saddle after myshoulder op.

Left / blue one is an FZ1 and right / yellow is an FZS 1000

Yeah, I noticed now that the blue one actually says FZ1 on it D'oh!

Greetings fellow foccers,

Iwas wondering if anyone knew anythign about Speedwell Motorcycles in Fishponds in Bristol.

I got my 99 FZS600 from them in April, I've been laid up since mid July from shoulder surgery, and now it seems they've shut.  Website is down, phone number doesn't work.

I'll try and swing by this weekend tosee what's up with the actual shop, but does anyone know anything?

Failing that, anyone recommend a good place to go in/near Bristol to get any work I need done on the bike doing?  Bad shoulders and lack of experience means I rely on garages a little more than i'd like just now.

Preferably in or near north Bristol.

Thanks
