Is this normal?
« on: 30 June 2015, 12:25:22 am »
I'm a bit perplexed. I pulled up next to another Fazer today and noticed it it had a different speedo to mine. Mine has a 260mph speedo. The other Fazer had a 260kph/160mph. Mine has no kph scale. Is this normal?

notice your "mph" sticker that is covering a kmh print.

it will have a speedo healer built in to take it to mph.

Or if it doesn't have a healer fitted, you have been riding very slowly lol.

:agree

That is the speedo off of a European bike. Your bike may be a parallel import rather than a genuine UK bike or the speedo may have been changed for a euro one.

Hi 7omly,

in top gear at around 5000 revs have a look at what the speedo reads . . .
Is it 60 or 100? This will tell you if your reading Mph (60) or Kph (100)  :rollin

Anyway, 260mph! that's the top end of this Porsche 9FF, even if it is blue  :lol

I know some people make a lot of stuff up on here to look cool but come on man.. a blue car doing 260mph... only a black car can go that fast.

Around 60mph at 5000rpm. The good news is I can simply replace it with a genuine UK speedo? Anyone got one going cheap?

7omly - There will be a box of tricks somewhere between the sensor and the speedo to make it read 60 instead of 100. You will have to remove that if you fit a UK speedo.

Thanks BBROWN1664, I thought as much. I'm hoping it's just behind the speedo. To get a replacement with a time clock isn't easy as most are the earlier 1998-99 ones. It's still a fantastic bike and has rekindled my love of riding. The divvy was more or less for commuting but the Fazer is for everything because it's just fun to ride. I even find myself riding when it's rainy instead of using the car. :)

My bike is a 2000 FZS600S with the time clock on it.  I thought of buying the dial  but was too keen on taking off the speedo needle. If I buy that dial will I have to remove the speedo healer. At 70 my needle is only one third of the way round the dial but on UK bikes 70mph is almost half way round.

Thanks for the advice. I'm now unsure if the clocks are even off the right bike. Mine have odometer, trip one, trip two and time clock respectively when you press the top button. However I've seen what I assume are later boxeye clocks with a separate LCD display at the bottom of the rev counter. The more I look into it the more confused I am.

My bike is exactly the same.  Please correct me if I am wrong, but if you fit a new U. K. speedo face obviously the needle will then not read correctly, you will have to remove the electrical corrector box.  But the bike will then record the mileage in kilometres as it is a genuine European speedo you have stuck the new face onto!  I think?

If you convert the speedo (as 7Omly's has been done) the odometer starts to increase in miles instead of km's from the point of the conversion.

Sorry I wasn't very clear on what I was saying, I meant if he tries to change it to be like a U.K. bike by fitting a replacement U.K. style  dial face and removing the corrector, the speedo will be o.k. but it will revert back to recording the distance in kilometres.  I think! Please correct me if i am wrong.

yes. That's right.
Dismantling the speedo case will often cause more problems than it solves too.

The nightmare continues. I purchased a low mileage (15,500 miles) and they look mint. I followed the advice of foccers and removed the speedo healer. I fitted the replacement clocks and the fun began. As soon as I switched the ignition on the speedo needle went to 28mph. I took the bike for a ride and ridethe speedo responds oddly. I reckon I was doing around 45 but the speedo was showing around 75mph. My bike appears to have an electronic speedo pick up on the left fork leg. Are these Kmh or Mph specific. I beginning to despair. The bike runs perfect in all other respects. Whilst I was removing the speedo healer from the junction box under the tank I found this item with a green wire going into one side and a black/red one coming out of the other but not connected to anything. Any help would be grateful because I now have the better half nagging me about buying a dog, not the canine variety but the bike. Women don't understand that at 15 year old it just might need some maintenance.
