Wow indeed. That was ace!
Great skill shown by the cop rider by not backing off, I bet the chap being chased was thinking something like "Heck, I just can't get away".
I was waiting for the inevitable crash into some poor innocent driver and I think the guy is lucky it wasn't nastier with the way he was riding.

Picture doesn't seem to be appearing.

On FLICKR you need to click on the share button. A box should pop up. Select BBCODE and then select the size - for posting on forums I use the medium size as large is too large.

Fazer8 / FZ8 / Re: Hateful 8
« on: 14 October 2017, 08:04:43 pm »
This is the first mention of an 8 since I've been on this forum so I wouldn't say the others hate the model otherwise the threads would be full of comments.
I've got a thou literally because of the price, I've always hankered after one and this one popped up at the right price at the right time. If it had been an 8 I might have gone for that too.
I would say (at a good guess) that the majority of members on here have the 600, so you'll have to make up for the lack of numbers and shout up about the 8.

For Sale & Wanted / Re: Wanted- silencer and wiring loom.
« on: 14 October 2017, 06:36:58 am »
I know a chap in Glasgow that has a standard silencer for a 2004 FZS1000 if that's any good? He wanted £50 for it - he'd probably let it go slightly cheaper...
He was the previous owner of my newly acquired Fazer and I got in touch and bought a number of spares from him, I didn't want the standard silencer. If you are interested I can pass your contact details onto him (send them in a private message to me)

I'll have a look.
I'm not too bothered if they are dearer as long as they are good.

It looks to be a good supplier as they say they test all the stuff they sell.
Here's a link to their 12v page for anyone else interested

General / LED Stop/Tail bulbs - Any recommendations?
« on: 13 October 2017, 09:30:46 pm »

Some years ago I fitted some LED Stop/Tail light bulbs to my FJ1200 as it was a PITA to put new bulbs in due to the ABS brain being completely in the way. The idea was that LED bulbs last longer and I'd have less hassle. The LED's were great and didn't blow so they were worth the extra money.

Fast forward a few years and I bought some LED rear bulbs for the Fazer as I had both standard bulbs blow on Sunday.
These one's I have bought are crap. The tail light is far too bright and when the brake is applied it is very difficult to notice any difference - I am suspecting that they've got the connections the wrong way round. Naturally I have complained and requested to return them.

Has anyone bought some LED Stop/Tail bulbs recently that they would recommend?

I feel I need a holiday after that lot, a few days fishing on the Wye should do it.

Get yer bike out this weekend and enjoy some nice British weather. Although the fishing trip sounds like a perfect way to unwind after your 'holiday'.

Diesels and Lawnmowers (Bike racing n things) / Re: BSB Showdown
« on: 12 October 2017, 06:32:49 pm »
I took the gamble on Monday and bought two tickets on line. Saving £14 with the print at home option.
Was gonna go in the Jag as the M11 is a boring ride but as the weather looks great i'll set off a little earlier and go a more interesting route.
I'm hoping it will go down to the last race but Haslam has got a great lead and it will take a disaster on his behalf  for the others to catch him.
After the race you may see a Fazer howling up the M11...

Plenty of aftermarket handle bar risers available. Nip down to a custom bike shop. Make sure they do other stuff than for Harleys.
If your meaning the top yoke being hollow,  this is a Yamaha thing. I had the same problem on an FJ 1200. I ended up getting an alloy top yoke made. Cost a fortune.

Does a blocked needle valve seat cause overflowing carbs whilst the engine is running?

As for the rest with such blocked carbs I'm thinking maybe the tank is rusty on the inside, anybody heard of this being a problem? I think I'll fill a few glass bottles from the tap on the tank whilst it's off the bike and see if I can see any particles.

Yes, the needle valve being blocked will cause overflow problems.

If any of the particles are black this indicates that the fuel hose is degrading and needs changing. Easier and quicker to take a section of pipe to bike dealer (or car parts supplier if there are no bike dealers) to match the diameter of the pipe. It's not very expensive so buy more than you need. Also fit an in line filter and some proper hose clips instead of jubilee clips.

The tank can go rusty on the inside (it does on most bikes eventually) or get loads of crap in it. It takes a bit to clean them out but it's worth doing. If it is very rusty it might be easier (and cheaper) to find a replacement.

I know it's not ideal - far from it in fact - but you will get home and it will be one holiday to remember for the wrong reasons.

Best of luck with getting the snapped one out - unless you've already done it...
I've got to admit that I hate trying to undo disk bolts cos you never know if one's gonna break.

Mpg doesn't bother me except a sudden drop can point to a problem.
I just like to know the tank range for planning my stops.
I did wonder how much longer I could keep filling but I couldn't be bothered to brim the tank. A quick fill to the top is a good guide.

I went for a ride-out around Shropshire/Powys with a bunch of mates. Total miles for me was 460 which is more than I've done in one day for a long while.
My thou does 160 miles from full to reserve which is from a mix of riding quick and taking it steady. I've been used to bikes that can do 200 miles to the tank (but they cost more to refill) but 160 isn't too bad as I'm usually ready for a break/smoke by that time.

You really need a blow torch on them so they're really hot.
I use thread-lock because the bike manufacturers do. They're renowned for cutting down on grease etc so if the disk bolts didn't need thread-lock they wouldn't put it on.

Went to watch the Somerset Rebels Speedway take on Kings Lynn at the Oak tree arena .

I went to see the return match at Kings Lynn. I don't go to watch speedway often as I don't finish work early enough and it's an expensive hobby if you go regularly.
It was great to see Lewis Kerr not only back in action but also winning, despite him riding for the opposition.

The disc bolts should have thread-lock on them which makes them difficult to undo. You need to give each bolt plenty of heat to release the thread-lock. They are still a devil to get undone and normally make a good crack noise when they start to turn.
When you put a new disc on it's best to also use new bolts with thread-lock, you can use your old bolts if they came out ok and the Allen bolt heads haven't gone sloppy but new ones don't add too much to the cost and I've always thought that bolts that have been heated are weaker which is not a good idea on the most important part of your bike.

Good points there. I'm not too worried about johnny foreigner filling up in Lux or Belgium and running round the UK tax free as to be honest if a reciprocal agreement was introduced after brexit we could end up worse off.
It would be better if the tax 'rebate' could be given at the point of sale (I suppose fuel card companies could do this) but again it could be open to abuse and I'm sure there'd be a few cowboys trying it on.
The vignette system that Belgium/Holland etc use is much simpler, just buy a ticket for how many days you want (which can be bought a petrol stations etc or on-line) and away you go. Even if you get delayed you can buy one easily.

As for VED for UK vehicles, do you think the govt are worried that they'd lose money with a fuel tax system and have to hike up the tax therefore losing votes?

I've tried contacting AutoCoolRadiators and WestMerciaRadiators both but neither has got back to me.

Has anyone had any experience with Motorcycle Repair Specialists in the East Midlands?

A mate had a rad refurbished at Leicester Radiators. It was a similar cost to buying a new Chinese rad. He sold the bike pretty soon after fitting the rad so I've no idea how long it has lasted.

http://www.carradiatorsleicester.com/

I fitted a new Chinese rad to my old FJR1300. There were a couple of fitting problems but not as bad as the one in the pics above. It is still going strong 2 years later despite the new owner dropping the bike in a car park. I know others who have fitted them and not had any problems with them leaking and they ride all year round. I got mine from an English seller (for £67) so didn't face any import charges. At that price I thought it was worth a go as it was cheaper than sending it off to be repaired.

That's a very good price.
I bought mine from my local speedway shop in the village. It was about £18.

I just love Castrol R and I have a can in my shed which I bought to use on my old BSA (now sold) but I pop a bit in my bike every now and then and especially if I'm on a ride-out with some friends just so they can get a whiff.
I was told it is basically castor oil so that's probably why it causes stomach complaints...

Hey Hugh,
Shove a drop of Castrol R in your lawn mower tank about 5 ml will do, makes mowing the lawn a completely different experience.

Ha ha Tommy. Been there, done that a couple of weekends ago. The missus asked what the smell was but my lad knew straight away  :lol  Funny thing was that I cut the lawn a lot quicker than usual...

Yeah I got my maths wrong at 1p a litre for tax. I do think it would be a fairer system as it would also apply to anyone visiting our country in their vehicle (although I would also pay a small VED for cutting my lawn...) but even though the idea has been talked about for a number of years I don't see a government having the balls to implement it.

Transport companies (trucks/buses etc) would lose out compared with now but a scheme can be devised easily enough to off-set any additional fuel tax against other taxes.

I use about 70,000 litres of diesel per year in my truck. The money would have to come from somewhere. I don't think the government would implement a rebate scheme as it's open to abuse/fraud and if the only other way to absorb the cost is to pass it on to the customer then you know what that means as we are the customers at the end of the chain.

I suppose I might gain an advantage in my car as my 'commute' is 15/20 miles per week and I use Sarah's car at the weekend when I'm not on the bike.

I know that seems to be the way to go as it keeps costs relative to your own use but a 1 pence rate of duty per litre would cost us an absolute bomb per year - I can't imagine it would be any less.
