Stripped my exup valve today it was siezed solid partly open. The cables had been slackened enough so that the servo still moved so didnt throw up the 7k tacho error. Amazingly all the bolts came out without breaking  :eek  and its a totaly different bike now its working properly. Hadnt ridden one before mine so didnt realise how strangled it was at the top end till now.

grats on getting the bolts out. once serviced once its so easy to keep on top of. hope you replaced the bolts with good SS ones.
i tend to replace even the SS ones each service to.

I fitted good quality ss will def be keeping on top of maintaining the exup. Not a hard job did it on my R1 before. It would appear that the prev owner or the dealer i bought it from couldnt be bothered fixing it so slackened the cables right off to hide the fault  :( .

Ah the joys of owners forums!  This post has just informed me, without even having to ask, why my gen 1 is not revving out (when the gearbox is working!), so that'll be another little job to do whilst the engine's out. Thank you:0

Another common cause of not revving out is obstruction to the mouth of airbox.  It's a tempting area to store waterproofs, stash Optimate wiring etc etc ;)

Yes, on the Gen 2 as with most modern bikes the exhaust valve is just for noise reduction. The Gen 1 is a different matter entirely.
