Title: Chain measurement question
Post by: YamFazFan on 19 October 2014, 07:19:59 pm
Hi guys.Hope you can settle this for me.If the final drive chain length on a bike is specified as being 96 links,do you count the number of rivet pins to get the 96 figure?.Many thanks.YFF.

Thanks for the info chaz.I bought a length of chain today from off a huge coil for my old Kawa trail bike, using the pitch & link number spec from the service manual.Got home & thought i'd bought half a chain :lol. Was thinking only the outers count as links :rolleyes(was too dark to go out to the shed & check it against the old 1).

The answer seems obvious now :rolleyes. You count the inner roller link in addition to the outer pin link (the part I allways think of as 'The Link') don't you.eg 48 roller links + 48 pin links=a 96 link chain.

Listen to the video, he talks about the width of the chain then measures the pitch, then he goes on about the width of the chain, fair enough he measures the distance inner plates and roller, surprised that cycle chains are still measured in inches etc!

I know nit picking

Top tip ;).Never bought a chain this way before (broken to length from off a stock coil).Seems good value tho..£19.00 for 96 links.
