FZS600 Fazer / Re: Oil recommendation?
« on: 29 May 2016, 03:37:54 pm »
Never heard of that brand, a quick google shows theyre a "family run oil distributor" according to their website - http://www.westwayoils.co.uk/#!about/c10th

So they buy oil from somewhere, stick their own label on it and sell it on. If theyre able to sell it on at £20 for 5 litres, and make a decent enough profit to bother with it, they must be buying some dirt cheap stuff... if it looks too good to be true, it probably is! Or maybe Im just being too cynical!  :lol  Either way let us know how it goes, if it turns out to be good, for that price Ill stock up on it!

I used this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motul-5000-FZS600-Fazer-98-03-Oil-And-Filter-Kit-/351278293650?hash=item51c9d16292:m:mog0RUj5b_ujSjeYeJeLcNg

Seems alright to me, surely oil is; oil does?  :rollin  Is it really worth paying double the price for Fuchs or Shell or some other premium brand covered in technical mumbojumbo like "Electrosyntec Technology" (wtf is Electrosyntec Technology ????) and shiny pictures to entice the people in Halfords?

Gear change is a bit clunky, but then its always been a bit clunky. I was under the impression thats just how Fazer engines are!

FZS600 Fazer / Re: What have you done to your FZS600 bike today
« on: 23 May 2016, 09:15:18 pm »
Fitted new K&N air filter and Iridium spark plugs. Took the sprocket cover off to check the front sprocket whilst I was there... then proceeded to spend the rest of the afternoon cursing and swearing and having a proper tantrum trying to figure out why the hell the clutch stopped working! Taking bits off and attacking things with spanners and nothing I did seemed to make it work.

Turns out that for some reason when I took the sprocket cover off, it reset the clutch cable to maximum slack and stopped working!

Ive not really noticed any difference from the K&N like some people seem to claim it fixes everything on the FZS600! Though it does perhaps seem to start a little easier, and whether its just placebo effect or not I cant tell but maybe the acceleration from about 4-7k seems a little smoother?

:rollin  yeah got it off Sinto here!

Not really noticed any difference yet, though not had a chance to try it out properly either! It does look gorgeous though and thats gotta count for something!  :D

Forgot to say earlier when I looked at your pic, aren't those rubber bootstamp for the mirrors meant to be underneath the end part to stop them flapping about?
Yeah probably! But theyre old and dont fit and keep popping out! What Id like to do is get some folding mirrors for extra tight inner-London filtering ability! Someone told me the mirrors from the R1 might fit it, if I can find a pair might be worth a try.

Double bubble screen fitted and some sexy anodised blue bolts :) Now for a lovely ride in the sun to see if it actually makes any difference. If nothing else it makes the bike look significantly sportier. Forgot to buy new trim for the screen though, whoops!

Next on my list of mods:

- fender extender
- rear hugger
- more modern looking indicators rather than the horrible chunky originals
-braided brake pipes (more anodised blue of course :V )
speaking of which, I heard theres various forum/club discount codes floating around to get money off braided lines from somewhere, anyone know more about this?

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Fitting more stuff on the handlebars!
« on: 11 January 2016, 11:11:27 pm »
RAM stuff looks nice, but the actual phone holders and other assorted RAM bits seem to be well expensive!  :eek  (and Im a cheapskate student bum!  :D )

I do have a tank bag with phone/satnav pouch thing on top, but its next to useless because as soon as any kind of sunlight hits it, you cant see the screen, and its at such an angle that youve gotta stare right down at the tank to see it, not really ideal for trying to avoid hitting the car infront  :rollin Thats why I prefer solid cases with rigid screens, nothing to ripple and reflect sunlight, or at least something with a solid back I can wedge stuff under to force the phone against the screen and flatten any ripples.

Might have to give that eBay one a go, but it looks a bit ma-hoo-sive!

FZS600 Fazer / Fitting more stuff on the handlebars!
« on: 11 January 2016, 08:34:30 pm »
Maybe Im just not making the most of whats available, but does anyone else find theres bugger all room on the standard handlbars for mounting stuff? Theres no room on the right side due to brake fluid reservoir, I cant fit anything in the middle because of a big bolt head meaning nothing fits under the bars, and the little room on the left side is taken up by heated grips control switch! I want to fit a phone/satnav holder but cant find one that fits!

I got one of these extension arm thingy mounts and fitted it to one of the fairing bolts, but it vibrates so much its practically unusable, youre busy focusing on the satnav wobbling so much by the time youve figured out where youre meant to turn youve missed the turning!  :eek

Anybody got a solution? How have you lot mounted various bits and bobs on the handlebars? Anybody got a link to a phone holder/mount that doesnt suck? :)

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Fuel tank range?
« on: 21 December 2015, 01:44:02 pm »
With the bike level and stationary I measured it needed 1.5 litres before fuel flowed due to the stand pipe inside the tank. On mine it took another 2.3 litres before the fuel gauge registered anything. Those figures will be less when on the move and yours might be different anyway. I wonder why I bothered writing it? :\

Didnt think of the fuel already in the pipes, thats an interesting extra variable. Also noticed than when moving theres a huge difference in fuel reading, I seem to "gain" 1/4 of a tank when moving :P So in theory as long as I never stop moving Ill never run out of fuel... right? It totally works like that doesnt it?  :rollin

Yeah its got a digital odometer that you can change between odometer/total miles, trip 1, trip 2, clock.

So 20L tank you reckon? Might have to be brave and let it run a bit emptier next time, see how much I can really squeeze in there!  :D

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Fuel tank range?
« on: 21 December 2015, 01:06:43 pm »
Im not sure whether mine is an 18 or 20L tank actually, bike is reg'd in 00 but think it mighe be a 99 model? Any easy way to tell? I think the most Ive ever wedged into a tank is 17L, but cant tell if its near empty or has a few more L sloshing around in the bottom!

Did a 200 mile trip yesterday, fuel light came on at 1/4 of a tank, and I chickened out and filled up at approx 170 miles because gauge was showing empty and I didnt fancy running out of petrol on the M3 at 2am! Wedged 16.7 litres in it then so still had at least 1 litre+ left

FZS600 Fazer / Fuel tank range?
« on: 21 December 2015, 12:01:31 pm »
From what Ive been able to find on t'internets, Yamaha suggests the FZS600 should only be capable of 130 miles to a full tank?  :eek  What on earth are they doing to get such poor mileage? Ive ranged between 150-220 miles to a full tank depending on how ballsy I was feeling between fillups and how far I could push my luck! :P

Whats the sort of average MPG and range you get out of the Fazer? Ive tried using fuelly but cant get it to work properly, plus I dont really bother keeping petrol reciepts and noting the mileage! Rough calculations using an MPG calculator puts my MPG anywhere between 45-55MPG which dont seem to bad, and thats with fairly conservative riding.

Also the fuel gauge seems to be totally useless, when filling up to the brim, it stays above the F marker for about 80-100 miles, then instantly drops down to about 2/3rds of a tank, and the remaining 2/3rds vanishes very quickly! I dont really want to run it til its totally dry and risk wrecking my carbs or dragging crap into the fuel system.

What can be done to improve MPG as well? I generally tend to run on "super" petrols, because it only costs about 30p more to fill the tank and maybe the placebo effect benefits are worth it so why not? :rollin Ive not really owned it long enough to make a judgement on it, but I do seem to get marginally better range on super unleadeds. Filters and plugs were all done about 2 months ago so they should all be good. Ive heard mutterings that changing your sprockets can give better economy too, any truth in this?

Cleaned it, fitted some R&G heated grips, put cutiemarks on it. Sorted.

Need to get round to ACF50ing it at some point too

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Heateg Grips too long!
« on: 05 December 2015, 01:47:06 pm »
I got a set of R&G heated grips too and having the exact same problem! although mines the boxeye not fox and bars are slightly longer it seems, only overhangs by about 3mm or so, I got around this by fitting a few shims on the screw that holds the bar end, so it still tightens up fully but doesnt press against the grip. Not sure if you could do the same, might be worth a shot but 10mm is a bit more of a significant gap :P I'd be tempted to try it and threadlock the bar end screw so it doesnt wobble loose from not being fully sunk in.

« on: 23 November 2015, 12:30:31 pm »
Side of helmet, anywhere else makes you look like a tellytubby! Or worse one of those permanantly angry lycra clad peddle warriors with a go pro sprouting from their lid, that go around screeching peoples number plates on youtube every time they feel mildly offended by someone.

Ive got a Drift Ghost HD which is a bigger bulkier thing than that one, dont get an problems with turbulance. The built in mic is crap though, nothing but wind noise if youre travelling above 20, but Ive got an external mic tucked away inside my helmet that sorts that problem, dunno if that cam supports external mics but theyre well worth getting if you want to record sound too.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Tyre Pressure on Aftermarket wheels?
« on: 15 November 2015, 08:58:17 pm »
The pressure they would have been set at on the R1

I thought that would be too obvious  :rollin  thought different bike, different weight etc that they might need to be set differently. Google seems to imply 36 front 42 rear (for an R1) which seems a bit high to me, then again Ive only ever had a 125 with cheap shitty chinese tyres that were a simple 30PSI all round and forget about it!

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Oil Filters
« on: 15 November 2015, 10:22:36 am »
Ive always just used halfords own brand ones on my cars, cheap and do the trick! Not sure if they do own brand bike oil filters.

K&N are renowned for being pretty good at everything so I cant imagine there would be anything wrong with using them! Never heard of hiflo. I'd be tempted by K&N purely because of the nice design they use of welding a nut onto the end of them to get a spanner around! Why dont all oil filters do this? So much easier than using a stupid strap wrench or screwdriver method

FZS600 Fazer / Tyre Pressure on Aftermarket wheels?
« on: 14 November 2015, 10:15:49 am »
I *think* the previous owner of my Fazer has fitted aftermarket (possibly R1?) wheels, and fatter tyres than the stock ones.

Whilst this makes handling lovely, and long sweeping bends an absolute pleasure (though it does give me the turning circle of a battleship)... Ive got no idea what pressure I should set my tyres to! Any suggestions?

I think tyre sizes are front: 120/70/17 and rear 190/50/17 (though doing that from memory, at work at the moment! Will have to double check when on break! :P )

Introduction / Another newbie!
« on: 09 November 2015, 09:57:15 pm »
'ello all!

Just passed my DAS last week (first time too, much better than car test which I failed 3 times  :rollin ) and bought a lovely 2001 FZS600 for my first "proper" bike, upgrading from a lil YBR125 that Id been on for 18 months.

Touch wood, Ive not had any issues with the Fazer and hope it stays that way, but thought Id join here and get to learn a bit more about them!

Currently living in London, moved up here from Cornwall last year to train as a paramedic, got about 6 months left til graduation and eventually aiming to have a crack at the medic bikes but lets not get too far ahead of ourselves :P

Heres my new baby, only picked her up today and its the most fun Ive had biking so far by miles... absolutely shafts the ER6 I was learning on.  :D
