FZS600 Fazer / Re: MAGNATEC 10W40 OIL
« on: 08 April 2012, 10:39:58 pm »
Don't use "Magnatec" ... it has molybdenum sulphide in it and that may well bugger up your clutch. That's what Mr Yamaha means when he says "Avoid oils woith friction reducing additives"
Having said that, several on here have used Magnatec or fully synthetic with no reported problems.

Any standard car oil that meets the SE, SF or SG spec or has a grade "CD" or higher will do fine: (ie NOT "Car-lube's" cheapest offering).
Asda or Tesco semi-synth are both cheap and good.

If you like your oil to be "reassuringly expensive" then use something with a picture of a motorbike on the label.
Bike oil is simply car-oil with added marketing by suits that sponsor bike-racing. I have yet to see any evidence otherwise.

i dont wanna fight this one too hard!!! cos everyone has their own thoughts.................
however..................for FZS600 prior to 2002 Mr Yamaha states DO NOT USE "CD" OR ABOVE!!!!

My huggers a pryamind, anyone know where i can get those nuts from? my tax disc flew off, managed to find the tax disc no look in the bolt though  :\

do you mean the countersunk washers that fix the hugger? if so they are available from pro-bolt, http://www.pro-bolt.com/index.php/stainless-steel/stainless-steel-bolts-and-washers-countersunk/stainless-steel-countersunk-washer-m6-x-22mm-o-d.html

although with some searching around you can probably find them cheaper.

no the 2002 chain guard was fairly durable plastic, could still flex a lot but there wasnt any signs of mine twisting at all.

I know what you mean about throwing time and money at it thou, im trying to keep mine pretty standard but am adding bits that will help preserve the bike, as i ride all year round and its kept outside under a bike cover so I really have to try and stay on top of keeping it clean and protected
my next want is stainless radiator cover.

yeah the tie wrap is for  the scotoiler, ive got the tourer type mounted behind the No-plate, there were 2 ties last week looks like ive lost one over the weekend....... was going to replace them anyway they get pretty grubby and the nylon does breakdown with UV

apparently its the spacing and position of the holes for the chain guard that changed, not really sure why??

yeah Im really pleased with it  :D :D :D
I ordered it direct from pyramid with a fenda extenda too on tuesday and it was delivered yesterday.
yep it was a piece of cake to fit, as said 3 bolts to remove chain guard and 1 bolt for the brake hose guide.
it came supplied with new stainless mounting kit and everything aligned perfect.
i agree it definately gives the bike a "bigger" look

that kind of error message is usually due to having the wrong WPA password.
double check your password and make sure if you are entering it from the remote control that you are putting any numbers or capital letters in correctly

FZS600 Fazer / pyramid hugger fitting to 02 FZS600
« on: 28 March 2012, 12:43:49 pm »
Hi all,
I have just ordered a rear hugger from Pyramid but I am having to have it delivered to my work place.
I'm wondering if anyone has fitted one of these and if its an easy job? i.e in a lunch break at work with minimal tools?
or is it likely to need the wheel removed and re-aligned and risk to much going wrong for a lunchtime tinker?

Also since ordering it i have seen a few people with thou's that were not happy with the fit, anyone had good or bad experiance with the pyramid fit on the '02 600's?

many thanks

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Oil and filter change
« on: 23 March 2012, 10:27:08 am »
Oh christ, he asked the oil question.... :'( :'(

Welcome Chris  :D

Oil is a much discussed topic - some (the misguided fools ;) )will say you must buy bike specific oil such as Motul 7100 or similar, while others will say that if Mr Yamaha states CF or SL spec (which he does, for an FZS600) then any that meets that spec is champion. I'll leave you to work out which camp I fall into  8) .

Filter wise, I've always used generic from my local bike shop, never had any bother.

OK, i know this is a touchy subject but i cant help giving my opinion  :\ ,
where does Mr Yamaha state CF or SL for the FZS600?

the owners manaul and the service manual state that do not use CD or Higher ....... but does also say in the specs that SE,SF,SG or higher may be used.

using that info would suggest that an oil that was only SL spec would be fine,
the problem with most of the cheap SL oils that people seem to think are fine for a bike also meet the spec CF !!!!

CF spec oils do contain "slippery modifiers" such as molybdenum which are not good for wet clutches and not great for the high temps of gearboxes.

the asda oil material safety data sheet is here http://www.tetconnect.com/catalogueImages/sds/sds-04417844.pdf

its only my opinion but 10 years ago i would have agreed that oil was oil and been done with it, but new modern cheap oils that are designed to meet as many modern petrol and diesel combustion only all have some form of additives.

you wouldnt catch a cager putting gearbox oil into the engine, nor putting engine oil into the gear box, so why would i put anything other than a motorcycle oil into my bike?

I do agree that if you can find an oil that only states SE, SF, SG regardless of whether it states for motorcycle use or not, that it would be fine.
but i do not accept that CD,CE,CF is of any use.

sorry guys its only silkolene or such for me.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: st stutter!
« on: 21 March 2012, 02:13:14 pm »
its not likely to be a problem with the filter itself,
the first thing i would check is make sure that you havent pinched or kinked the fuel hose or breather pipes.
if those are good then it will come down to electrics (poss caps or plugs) or Carbs.

good luck

FZS600 Fazer / Re: stuttering fzs 600
« on: 20 March 2012, 08:21:47 am »
I think i got lucky with mine, it seems the only issue i had was a bit of water ingress into 1 of the caps. a good douse of WD40 and the symptoms were immediately gone, no matter how hard i pushed it to wot.
over the weekend i had the tank off to replace airfilter and whilst there cleaned and checked all leads and caps thoroughly as well as cleaning the seating area all around the plugs could see no proplems, I waited till dark and checked for any arcing or tracking as suggested, but could find nothing and the bike was still running a treat.
the only additional thing i did was to put some almagamating tape around where the HT leads enter the cap just as a precaution cos i ride all year round and believe prevention is better than cure.
hope yours is running sweet soon

Hi,
my fazer 02 has just developed what sounds to be a very similar problem.
it starts fine and runs fine around town as long as im very gentle and smooth on the throttle.
as soon as i try to give it some beans it stutters/judders around 6k rpm (it almost feels like your trying to accelerate in 3 gears too high) the bike does pull through it and then feels fine but have lost confidence in overtaking.
The thing for me is this problem started just after i had given the bike a real good hosing down, so I am assuming that my prob is almost certainly the caps ( I have just pulled them all off and sprayed with WD40 but wont get to ride until after work to see if it fixes the problem)
I would definately start with caps before taking the carbs apart.
