Title: The cool bike thread......
Post by: VNA - BMW Wank on 06 August 2019, 07:25:53 pm
How about a thread for posting photaes of, and discussing, cool looking bikes?
Post what you reckon is cool.  Call it out if you think it’s uncool.
All whilst staying ice cool.

Well if you are old school like me and use a PC…..
I searched google for pictures of the bike I wanted.  In my case the super cool and lovely Veitis EV-Twin. I clicked on the image I wanted.
Then I right clicked on the image.  I then copied the web address.  The key thing is it needs to be an image address ie ending in jpg.
Then once in the reply box – click on insert image – and paste in the web address for your image.  And post.

Yeah, I am a sucker for a boxer custom dude.

Nah doesnt work for me..... too skinny. I love a fat back tyre and ya need a wide tank over that engine imho. I like the more muscular look of the one I posted

If this thread takes off I predict a stark contrast in what's considered 'cool' based on age. I'd say there will be a split at around 40ish
Those of us below that age will prefer the more modern touch where as those above will prefer a more old school look... just a hunch

That’s what I love about it.  The boxer is such a wonderfully weird looking engine in a motorcycle.
It’s all about those pots.  So skinny it down to emphasize the pots.
And the bike has some nice modern touches too, the instrument panel, the mirrors and lights.

Yeah it’s gonna be interesting to see what is considered cool.
To me cool is style.  Fashion comes and goes, style is always there, it never goes away.  It can be old school or modern, but it has to be timeless, and I would say (maybe the younger ones will disagree) – reasonably bling free.

So says this 50 year old fart

Pretty cool Dude.
Loving the wheels and triple exhausts.

Here's the bike I lusted after for the longest time and still think looks the coolest of the race replicas ever made.

Now there no denying that the VTR is the cooler bike but looks wise I just think the Cbr600rr was so much better.
The angle of the screen and front fairing is sharper, the venting around the tail and that underseat exhaust 😍
As sports bike go this was perfection in my eyes. Was always a dream bike as a teen..

That’s fashion baby.  It’s bling.  It’s even got Dragster written on the tank when it clearly ain’t.

Foc me standards are slipping fast.  The VTR1000 is lovely, particularly the SP2, as is the CBR600RR (thought really your photo should be of the original with the right way up forks – it looks so much better).

These are bikes that look good and go good.

But I think cool bikes have to be bikes that are almost universally cool.  Bikers might stop and stare at a brutal or an SP2 but nobody else will.  Cool bikes make everybody pay attention and think – foc that’s cool.  They are bikes that make you feel cool, bikes that make cagers wish they were cool enougth to ride em.  Ice cool.

Off the shelf production bikes can be cool, though it has to be said the aging process helps, coolness often, like a good wine, improves with age.
Need some off the shelf prodiction coolness?  I give you the Moto Guzzi V7 Sport,

I don't know --- its all well and good looking cool but not many look like they will handle very well in anything other than a straight line. Like those solid wheels - how the hel are you going to get them around the corner with the gyoscopic effect of that mass.   Also manufacturer's are great at showing us bikes without a crappy uk reg plate but as soon as you add one it completely spoils the rear look - heck some don't even have indicators --- yes I know that you don't need them in this country by law but any "coolness" is going to be negated by you sticking your hand out like Frank Spencer when you want to make a turn.
But a having said all that the bike that always seems tro turn my head is a Brutale

And the gear shift looks like it is designed for space suit wearers, seems that cool and practical rideability do not go hand in hand. Or the ability to go around corners

also, I finally got a buyer more than happy to pay proper money for my cb13. Took it out today for its last ride, for a coffee at costa in Chepstow. Sat there drinking me large latte looking at it out of the window and thought 'fuck it. I know I'm broke and not working, but your going nowhere. best I get meself a job...'
I know they aint most peoples idea of cool. but for me, Honda got this bike very, very right, and its got its own beautifully engineered cool, and then some :)
PS guy martins turbo gixxer pikes peak bike. I wouldn't wanna ride it but its deffo cool. as is the man.

Dude look at it, it is so fucking cool.  I don’t even like dragster and chopper bikes, but I cannot deny that thing is cool.  The shapes and minimalism are perfect.  And check the lack of cables, it’s got a twist clutch with the cable running down the inside of the bars.  It is pure stylised handmade minimalist totally bling free cool.

You know Ogri sometimes the Japanese accidently make something cool.  I personally think CB13000’s are cool.  Not ice cool, but cool all the same.  It’s just UJM on steroids and somehow it just looks great.

A Fazer thou might be a far far better bike, but it will never ever be as cool as the CB13000.

I think this one will age well.  And of course it has to be the naked one, a nose fairing wrecks it.

Yeah bit its absolutely foccing fugly

And all the best vehicles are thirsty Haha you dont buy a Ferrari then complain it only does 5 to the gallon. My Gen 2 only does 80-100 miles to a tank because it tuned to shit and rips ya damn arms off everytime you open the throttle....  where as the brothers versys 650 does well over 250 miles to a tank but is dull as dishwasher.... horses for courses and all that. I would imagine the MT10 will have the same MPG as an R1....

Anyways there isnt anything cool about MPG and tank range...... let's get back to buisness

Probably for the same reason it has a Yamaha Blue Spot front caliper - so you can stop.
Which is handy.  Not just from a safety point of view, but you may want to stop and pause now and again so as folks can fully appreciate how cool you are.

Which is handy.  Not just from a safety point of view, but you may want to stop and pause now and again so as folks can fully appreciate how cool you are.

LOL, I was referring more to the fact that it is Honda and therefore assumed Honda parts would be on it!

I'm guessing Zenith Gradua for the bike on the left. I reckon that's the belt pulley adjuster winding device thingy they had sticking out above the fuel tank ;) .

Mr.Red. If you like those old flat tanker, total loss oil type bikes, then you must try and get to next years Pioneer Run from Epsom Downs. It would be an early start for you to get there, as they start to leave at 8am, going from memory. I always go, but more for the social, as always regard that meeting as the first event in a new biking year. It's usually the 3rd or 4th Sunday in March. See you at the tea hut, next year :lol .

There's a bit of a smell of beard oil, with all the hipster-cool bikes on the thread, but I guess cool is in the opinion of the individual. IMO, for example, BMW haven't produced a cool bike since the R90S!

Almost any bike can look cool with a bit of work, take Italian firm RossoChromo's CB1000R-based XESS, Velocity-moto's MT09-based 900LC or anything by Japanese firm AC Sanctuary, but the bike that was cool for me straight out of the crate was the Benelli TNT. Probably totally unreliable, but it looked something else!

I like Sanctuary stuff, but it’s usually on the warm side of cool.  They don’t ooze universal coolness.

I love Katana’s, but I’m not sure if they are really cool.  They are desirable because they look so wonderfully weird, and I am pretty sure they will get attention from both bikers and non-bikers.

So here’s a Katana from Sanctuary.  The front discs with those red bobbins are a little uncool and the exhaust is a little busy, but it’s still reasonable cool.

I stopped off at Asda in Barnstaple on my way to Croyde for a surfing holiday recently and there was a guy there with a Royal Enfield.

I commented about it being a classic, but, to my surprise, he said it was only a couple of years old, he'd imported it from India where they still made them!

Royal Oilfield is quite well established in the UK with plenty of dealerships. They've recently brought out two 650 twin Interceptor models.

I dont think Euro 5 is political really. It's more just legislation that affects all of us buying or riding new vehicles 🤓🤓

And more the VNAs point I cant see it wiping the engine out completely. It'll just mean more investment will be needed into the development of said engine to make it fit the mold thus increasing costs to us....... definitely not cool 👎

I suppose there’s pros and cons.
It’s gonna be interesting to see how the car and bike markets evolve over the next few years.
2020 is going to see far greater choice in the electric car market.
Small 125cc bikes and mopeds might turn to batteries.
For bigger bikes,ie longer distances I don’t see electric working well yet.

What we are already seeing, and going to see more of, is variable valve timing.  I’d say that’s a good thing.  I was well impressed by the R1250R I tested.  Just a shame I can’t get my hands on one right now, that is unless I pay for endless pointless options.

Turbos and superchargers.  We are going to see more of these.

Interesting article here;
https://www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/news-and-views/features/bikes/euro-5-emissions-what-they-mean-to-motorcycles (https://www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/news-and-views/features/bikes/euro-5-emissions-what-they-mean-to-motorcycles)
As for the politics;
Quote
You might think that a piece of EU legislation is relevant only on that continent, but European emission rules are fast becoming the closest thing we have to a worldwide standard. Massive international bike markets including India and China also base their legislation on Europe’s emissions limits, and Japan also aligned itself with Euro 4 back in 2017.

It is not just in the automotive sector that EU legislation is becoming global.   EU legislation and standards are fast becoming global standards across many sectors.

The UK has influenced and shaped these EU/Global standards.  Soon we will be left with no influence whatsoever with respect to new legislation/standards but will have choice but to comply.

Politics over.

The issue apparently for air cooled engines is temperature stability.

It strikes me that to make a bike 'cool' you take a perfectly good machine and make it less comfortable, practical and often more ugly. Whoever decides these things won't be anyone who's opinion I care about (yes I know people don't care about my opinion either). I'm quite happy to be uncool  :)

I think first of all, bikes are in general are cool.  Biking is cool.  Though there are, in my opinion uncool ways of going about it, but in general it’s cool.

But this is about being extra cool, ice cool.  Prioritising cool over everything else.

It should also be about being universally cool.  Cool bikes are not just for bikers.

Comfortable and practicable, or even going fast are secondary considerations on the ice cool bike.

Though at the same time you have a point.  It should be possible to have an ice cool ride that’s every day usable.

It will still emit noise pollution, heat pollution, light pollution, brake dust (unless it has magic brakes?), consume tyres, wheel bearings etc. And the electricity it consumes will pollute the environment too.

Not the best example of a GS agreed, but yeah totally 80's, '79 and '80 being Cooleys best two years putting 4 cylinder Jap muscle, firmly on the map by winning consecutive AMA's and Suzuka two years running. Hopefully there should be a good example for me to take a pic of at the Bol in a few weeks time. Can't wait :thumbup .

The size of the latest lithium bike batteries the well off racers use now are really small, you wouldn't think they'd be able to work properly but they do,in most cases better than good gel ones!

Yup - it's a Benelli - gets a fairly decent write up and build quality seems good for a Chinese build.

No, it's the standard set up. Shaft goes through the gearbox to the other side.

Have I ever claimed it’s cool?  I first got my grubby mits on it back in 1987.  It was sitting in my folks garage with 26 miles on the clock.  I had a slight problem - no money and I wanted a bike – but more than that I wanted a bike license.  I took a good bit of stick for that bike, but I got my license, and in 1988 it got shoved back into my folks garage.

With my ma Dad having passed away at the very beginning of 2016, and my Mother shortly afterwards in a care home.  Well I dug it out of their garage, and it’s now sitting in my garage awaiting the day I decide to spruce her up a bit and maybe even take her for a spin again.  She’ll never ever be ice cool, but age has granted her a certain charm, and of course I have a sentimental attachment to the old girl.

  It's a Sunbeam s8 I think. The s7 looked cool with it's fat tyres.

Sunbeam were a subsiduary of BSA. Yep, I'd agreee, an S8. :)
Title: Re: The cool bike thread......
Post by: coffee on 15 January 2020, 05:15:25 pm
Yes that's an S8, I had one with a chair when you could ride a combo on L plates but the S7 was the one to have for pulling a chair. All 3 wheels were interchangable and they looked great with them balloon tyres. Those Sunbeams had a big fault in that the rear cylinder would overheat because being in line it wouldn't get the air cooling like the front. They were also very slow, you were lucky to get 50 with a chair on but I remember having a great crack lifting the chair wheel on tight left handers, when you first did it though you'd shit yourself thinking the chair was coming over and you'd bang it down and be on the wrong side of the road!! but when you got the hang of it you could go along with the wheel in the air in a straight line, very cool I thought, probably the only one who did though. :lol

Post by: robbo on 15 January 2020, 06:56:58 pm
Getting the chair in the air was great fun, as you say, once you'd got the hang of it. I had a third share of a Tiger 110 with a float sidecar. It used to be used for recovering broken down or crashed bikes. We bought it off a bike dealer for 15 quid when he upgraded to a van. No one relished their turn being passenger on the float with just a bit of scaffolding to hang on to though. Happy days :thumbup

Many years ago, I went to the Post TT Classic at Mallory Park. John Cooper and Ago were 'Parading' on their old bikes, a BSA triple and the MV500/4, not quite the 350/6 but it still sounded fantastic, that dry rasp sounds like nothing else.

MV won every 500cc GP title from 1958 through to 1974 and Ago took 7 of those on the bounce from '66 to '72 ('74 was the last time a four stroke won the championship before the start of the two-stroke era)

Awesome stats :eek

They certainly are, Ago's and MV's. Hailwood is my all time hero ( I actually met him once, I was about 14) but Ago was an incredible rider.

Thing is a lot of those titles were won against manx nortons,G50's,patons,Jawas' etc when the Japs pulled out,Agostini had very little competition for a good few years and when he did he'd struggle against the likes of Saarinen and when Phil Read started beating him after joining MV he was soon on his way.As far as I'm concerned his best days were the sixties when he had some great battles with Hailwood,Read,Ivy,etc, but one of the greatest? on paper maybe but I don't think he deserves to be classed amongst the really great, great riders.Imo he showed his true colours when he shafted Eddie Lawson when he was riding for Marlboro,Eddie asked Ago if the deal was going to be the same as last season and he said they'd pulled the funding and it was going to be a struggle to find funds, what he didn't know was Eddie was well in with the main man at Marlboro and when he questioned it he was told there was no problem with the funding and couldn't understand what Ago was on about, turns out Ago was creaming off the top and wanted to get Lawson as cheap as possible.Eddie jumped ship and won again,a proper great.IMO

It was a good engine, but frame design was iffy, clocked 175mph on the straight (in 1977) and ran high up in its debut endurance race until the Universal joint on the shaft drive broke.
The location of the swinging arm pivot was totally wrong and it was putting huge strain on the UV joint, it finally broke. Rules changed to 4 cylinder make and the project was abandoned. The project did put a huge strain on their resources and the advanced Japanese 4 cylinders that finally nailed its coffin in 1985.

I remember him well,a proper character, this kind of thing was really groundbreaking then.If I remember right he'd go up against the twin engined Hobbit back in the day,we would go to Santa Pod fairly regularly then and it was always the same, you'd be really excited when you got there but after a few runs you'd be bored  :lol  we never stayed 'till the end,but E.J was approachable and friendly, ;)  then again most of the drag strip boys were, much more so than some of the racers of the day.

Pretty certain the headers were sprayed. Maybe working on the theory of light colours dispelling heat quicker, but that's only my guess. I believe this bike is presently exibited at the Don Garlits museum in Ocala Florida. Went there in the late 80's, quite something even if you're not into drag racing.

Hmmmm  :book I know with household radiators they give out more heat it they are white as opposed to chrome because the chrome reflects the heat back in. So to follow that then a black rad would give out even more BTU's which would mean that black exhaust would allow more heat out through its walls than a white one. And don't they wrap exhausts with bandage to keep the gasses hotter to allow them to escape quicker so you don't want them to be dispelled through the wall of the pipes.
Hopfully some one will come along and explain.
Title: Re: The cool bike thread......
Post by: robbo on 16 March 2020, 09:46:03 am
I agree about the use of exhaust wrap but still think these headers are sprayed. Couple more pics, the 2nd shows a dent in one of the pipes.

Four into one system were first used on the track and were always black and remained that way until stainless was introduced, as they were custom made from mid steel and just painted, nothing chavvy about them, that's how they were.

Now a chrome system made for the masses and the road, that's chavvy  :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin [

No I meant the actually end can.... you trying to tell me that having 'nitro racing' written in big letters on your pipe is not chavvy 🤔
Could have forgiven the black pipes, I just prefer stainless as it looks more aesthetic and less like you've got the hammerite out 😜😜

I'll give you that  :thumbup

Black is how they were, track side.  Common systems for the road at the time, Piper being one of the most common in the UK, was chrome but it was for the road and masses.   Interestingly Kawasaki 80's sports bikes returned to what was called black chrome, looked great but didn't last long on the down tubes, real buggers to stop looking naff.

Eddie Lawson style racing seat, not a big fan myself.  But it was the only way to keep the rider from sliding off the back in what was WSBK/Prodie of it's day.

See what you mean.  If it was mine (dreaming) I’d want to change that and de-bling it just a tad (like dump the gold bar end weights etc).  It’s really sweet, lovely in black with the gold pin lines which seems to set off the later Z1000(is it?) squared off tank.  The forks are the right way up too, purposeful but understated.  It’s well nice.

Title: Re: The cool bike thread......
Post by: coffee on 21 April 2020, 09:51:26 pm
Up until a couple of years ago this would have been my dream bike,I always, always wanted an old Harley,Indian, etc. Then I was in the isle of man and we were stopping in some digs in Castletown and sharing with 2 lads, one with a Sportster and one with a Knuckle Harley about a 1940 or thereabouts,I couldn't believe it! my dream bike! then he proceeded to explain everything that goes with these old bikes especially the knuckle or equivalent Indian. Just to start it was a nightmare, juice on ,prime it,juice off ,kick, juice on,kick, kick.kick, fuckin' kick, when it did eventually start it had some moody foot clutch which had to be synchronised with the throttle to try not to stall it and the hand gear change was a joke  :lol  The bloke told me that the maintenance was just ongoing, and break downs commonplace! This on something that will cost you anywhere between £30,000 and £50,000 depending on the history and condition.Maybe this was just an unreliable one but I don't think so,because the owner really new about old Harleys. It makes you wonder when these were modern what the riders thought of them 'cause they wouldn't know any diff would they? Then again to someone who's never rode a bike before even a modern one could seem complicated. I would love to see some old footage of riders on a load of Knuckle heads and Indians mooching about. :woot

There's quite a skill in riding those Indians. The hand change is one thing, but the foot clutch must be a right killer. I've a pal who's had a Chief for the 30 years I've known him. It's totally unrestored and looks like it's been dragged out of a swamp. I've never known it break down though. Over the years whenever I've seen him I've noticed the windscreen getting lower and lower, as bits have broken off. That's patina for you. :)

I remember my first ride on one of these, for it's day it was eye popping, this is a B2 which was the same as the B1 expect for the firing. One of the first production bikes to have DFI as it was called then.

This was another leap the A1, unitrak, anti dive and improved DFI, now with diagnostic (codes) a race nose firing about another 10bhp.  The firing really worked, the suspension was in another league and the lovely black chrome which very sadly didn't last in the salt  :'(  Awesome  :D

That's just nuts  :eek .Something I have been saying for ages they may look cool to some but are mainly unpractical or totally un-rideable - and that is not cool.I wonder how much of the look of some of these promo pictures is stuff that is put on just for the picture but taken off and swapped to actually ride it.

Could well be all the engines were the same.  The TR1 was one of the few big bikes that had a fully enclosed drive chain, when at the time there was a move to shaft drives.

Its pretty lovely.  Obviously its built for show first.  But yeah to make it useable it would make sense to close off the engine from the rear wheel.  Some suitable proper road rubber too would be nice.  Yeah, its surprising how nice those old flying brick engines can look, and like a boxer the weight is all low down.

Whenever I see pictures like this of BMW's I find it hard to believe how Randy Mamola and the like would actually ground the heads in that series they ran a few years back! there's hard riders and then there's racers ! unbelievable ! :eek

I know what you're saying but even with decent road tyres you can't even come close to the crash bars on them. i had a road test on one of those race replica BM's a few years ago and with the footrests up by your earoles  and a radical riding position I've never been on a more uncomfortable bike,I know those race bikes were probably tailored for the racers' but how they used to ride them was amazing I think.

Yep I agree, mine was red and black 87, picked it up the evening before I went to the Is of Man.  PX my Gpz 900r for it, absolutely loved it.

Its all about the look, its all about universal cool – not whether the bike is a practicable commuter, how good it is at negotiating puddles, whether the ergonomics are comfortable or not or what the fuel economy is or fuel range.    FFS!

Look quit the petty squabbling - what about Allen's Kawasaki?
I mean how fantastic is that?  How does he do it - time and time again.  What a fella!
I do feel, he should create a nice 1350 badge as a wee finshing touch, to replace the 900 badge on the side cover.

I think he should offer me a test ride too!   Anyway I love it.  I think its cool, and it will certainly get noticed by both ordinary punters and bikers.  Its super cool, and nicely understated too.

That has to be, quite possibly, the ugliest and most uncool production bike that I’ve ever had the displeasure of having to look at.

I mean, If you parked that up outside your local artisan, hipster, wanky café, some of the ponsey customers would probably throw up on the spot, and the usual pretentious fud of an owner might just ask you to move it across the street.

That thing is the absolute polar fucking opposite of cool.  Jesus!

Pass me the petrol can and matches please. :evil

I think the key to cool, I mean real cool, is near universal appreciation.
I mean a person who is genuinely cool, doesn’t appear cool to only a small number of people, but is cool to many because they just naturally ooze universal cool.
So, a cool bike, has to turn heads of non-bikers and make em think – boy that’s cool.
The mess above, well never mind non bikers, I'm not sure it would appeal to many bikers.
It’s never in a million fuckin years ever gonna win a cool competition.

But just fitting wide bars and knobblies or clip ons and a seat hump to any old bag of shit doesn't automatically make it cool. You can polish a turd but you just end up with a shiny turd.

The bike is nothing more really than a piece of art and as art I would agree very hard to improve on.   That said as a bike you could ride more than just onto the set of a photo shoot, or up a nice flat driveway it certainly could be.  It's looks to me to have a hard tail i.e. no rear suspension, not unusual in it's self but all hard tails have sprung seats, this looks not to have one.  If it hasn't, I would have included a cantilever rear along the lines of Vincent, HRD or at the very least a sprung seat. ;)

Pile of shite may be a tad harsh I suppose but yeah I would describe the ride as... underwhelming.
Well actually I would go as far as to say it's the first time I've ever been 'bored' while riding a bike 😔
Maybe if your coming from an underpowered twin (er6, cb500 etc) then it might have seemed a lot better but certainly not a bike for me

yup. no rubber engine mounts for this old bugger. And a big ol 42mm flatslide to really up the ante on lumpy low down. I stopped at a burger bar last summer, and a bloke with a mahoosive KTm told me all the mods he had done to get it to nearly 200bhp. I said 'I know just what you mean, ive got open slash cuts, 42mm mikuni, stage two coil and leads, performance lumpy cam and its nearly double the horsepower of the stock motor!!'
Sadly, bone stock and strangled as they were for the uk market back in the nineties, it made 38bhp. Thats quite the achievement for 1340 cc dontcha think? :lol :lol :lol

Talking about dragsters, just reading about E.J.Potter,the Michigan Madman who came over from the states with a V8 lump in a Harley chassis, apparently he had no room for any transmission and would put the bike on a stand and run it up to the equivalent of 150mph and drop it onto the tarmac!!?? the resultant wheelspin would give him variable gearing enabling EJ to snake up the strip in spectacular amounts of tyre smoke and noise!! can you imagine the balls required to do that???.He even got into the Guinness book of records with an 8.68/172mph run in 1970 but the drag racing bosses wouldn't rcognise his speeds because his bike aptly named "The Widowmaker" didn't comply with their rules, didn't stop him packing places out wherever he went though,he's quoted as saying "drag racing is a way of making a living without working" what a character!!

yup owners got both side covers. waiting on a float from david silver l/h one was full of fuel on both sides. carbs horribly gummed up with varnish so a bottle of nail polish remover and lots of titting around afore it goes in the ultrasonic tank. Personally i think late sixties/early seventies small capacity hondas are little gems. having said that i wouldnt run one... :lol
Theres a sentimemtal pull to tis bike in truth. 'Knockie' ellington, an older boy who lived a few doors up from me on my council estate used to tear around it on his back in '73 when I was thirteen. I think thats where it all began for me with bikes

No I didn't have a Bella. A guy opposite my parents house had one, and it seemed all the ones I saw were maroon. The fast big scoot of that time was the Maicoletta. Wasn't trendy like a Vespa or Lambretta, but were very quick.
Not familiar with Tekalide paint, but used plenty of Belco brushing cellulose. With patience and a decent brush, the Belco used to turn out quite well.

Remember it well,do you also remember DAG exhaust paint? it was really good then suddenly you couldn't get it.A mate of mine used to paint everything with Belco, his bikes, van and used to change the colour of his helmet regularly with it,he always wore a Cromwell Carburton helmet 'cause it used to slope down at the back with a lovely leather neck piece. I think most of the racers at the time used them.

Not familiar with DAG, but did loads of motorbike frames in Belco, as well as a Morris 1000, bought for £5 needing a couple of wheel cylinder overhaul kits, and a VW Beetle, also bought for a fiver, which needed a top end overhaul. All done in the street then. You were dead posh if you had a garage back then.
My pal Del still uses a Cromwell pudding basin when blowing a few cobwebs off his Rocket Goldie or Road Rocket.
The first helmet I bought was an Everoak Racemaster, the most expensive you could buy at the time when jet style helmets were still quite new. It was 95/-, or £4.75 in new money. I'd saved all summer to get that. Up until then I'd been using a damaged ex Norman Surtees helmet. Good old days for sure. :)

I once rode a track ready version why back in the early 80's, my god  :eek what a difference to the road model.   The mods were little more than a few frame, swingarm braces and stiffer springs and 15w oil with reduced air gap, froks dropped through the yokes by 25mm.

Bit like the GT500 once breathed on they would go and handle like stink, back in the day  ;) :)

I really like the Beemer, I love the way the whole thing flows from front to back, and for once the minimalism really works.  Plus its got an almost surreal comic book look about it.  But it is real and road legal (with a few bits removed for the photoshoot).
It only weights 168kg wet.  Would definately turn heads.

Ogri, is there something wrong with the gravity in England just now?
Yeah the Yamaha is cool, more so with the exhaust fixed with the Akra stuff.  Goodness only knows what Yamaha were thinking when they decided to make that.  They seem to hold value well.  I like em.
I'm not so sure about the Triumph.  Thought the previous Rocket was a stinker.  Obviously I've not riden one, but I just think it would scare the hell out of me - stupid fast, then hard work to get round a corner.  Sure its got go, but really its all show - no?

Don't it just show how people's choices differ ? I think both those look great! I road tested a Rocket 3 some years back though and it was daunting, the power was brilliant but the weight around slow corners and trickling in traffic was an issue for me,so much so I took the bike back before I had to,but I'm a bit of a shortarse so maybe a bigger rider wouldn't find it an issue.I really think that yamaha looks the bizz though. :thumbup

A few years back my VFR left a good part of its fairing in France after massive hailstones settled and turned the road surface to ice. It's sat in the back of the garage since. RecentlyI decided to put it back on the road as quickly and cheaply as possible. I don't think it looks too bad:

Old bikes don't really stand the test of time with brakes like jelly and handling like supermarket trollies, tyres that don't really grip to well and dodgy electrics, It's just us longing for the seemingly carefree life that we had then.

Pretty good to be honest, rode one only last year and their still good, ok they're not going to keep up with your latest race rep's on tracks, but 99% on the road they are still right up there and comfortable with usable features.  Much of this of course is subjective, as if you can't ride well, it doesn't matter what your on.

I've seen people on on FZS600, Goldwings, CB500's even big scooters out ride R1/FZ1's, ZX10R, GSX-R etc, anyone can go fast in a straight line and stand a bike on it's nose!  The trick is doing it safely and on today's roads, high speed is not really a factor these days, what with speed cameras/vans and traffic mass, not unless you want to lose your licence or die that is.  Blasting off the lights only to be past, because you can't corner or filter safely is utterly pointless  ;) :)

:D  yes it's funny how the mist of time clouds the reality,if you really think back to those times when a bike was your only transport and used everyday in all weathers for work, shops [with a big foc off rucksack on your back] breakdowns, punctures, etc. was it that carefree? I enjoy biking much more now that I don't HAVE to go out in all weathers but you can never replace those memories and the GOOD times ay? :woot

My guess is it'll be pretty safe, given that there's a good chance it'll never get wet or dirty.

I was thinking about my old GPZ900 the other day. I'd love to ride one now to see how they'e stood the test of time?

I have a GPZ900R - 1984 A1 model. Had to do a bit to it but its a great bike. The anti-dive was awful, so I bypassed it and fitted wilbers springs and thicker oil then played around with the air gap. I also fitted silver spot calipers.. Also has stick coils and loads of other 'tweaks'

Strangely, when I went to look at my Boxeye a few weeks ago, we had a few miles to do, so you'd think that I would go on my MT10 but I chose the GPZ as its great on the motorway with a 200+ mile tank range.
