A quick 50mile run out this afternoon for a test.

A definite improvement in throttle response, it picks up nicely from low revs even when in one gear too high. It started more easily too. It just feels that bit sharper/crisper.

A finger in the end-pipe (which I had cleaned) did not seem so sooty as before.

More miles will tell, I will rack up perhaps a thousand more then inspect the plugs and by then the end-pipe will be more evidential. I may even whip the EXUP out again to see what effect there has been there.

I'll keep the post updated.

My second Gen 1 and 14yrs of riding one .... they are a fantastic machine and I still grin every time after a ride out, although my Tiger Sport is comfy (front and rear suspenders upgraded Maxton/Nitron) and I love the triple engine it is just not as surgical in the twisties. The Fazer just goes where I think I want it to be ...  I feel a another Nitron shock coming on too. I wiash I could find a mint, fresh out of the box one to re-live the journey all over again!

A quick update!

I treated myself to a Morgan CarbTune Pro ... and I will have to say that I wish I had brought one before!! Much superior to my electronic one (TwinMax) which only does two pots at a time. Seeing how all four were behaving simultaneously is much easier.

One thing I did note is that the CarbTune supplies very small bore plastic tube that you use as a damper in the rubber hose (located at the manifold end). I tried the CarbTune with and without the dampers and it makes a very big difference to the stability of the reading. In hindsight, I should have done that in times past when using the TwinMax, I am sure it would improve have improved the accuracy when making adjustment. Kicking myself really as the concept is not new to me, having worked in instrumentation for the past 30 odd yrs and at times in automotive engine testing! Doh!  :\

I will next time make a comparative test between the two instruments as I will be able to use the same damped tubing arrangement.

Mike,

I checked the pilot screws, all at 4 & 1/4 turns out. I have now set them 4 turns out.

I set the TPS sensor to read 0.7v, which is mid-range of the stated 0.65 to 0.75v DC in the Haynes manual.

It does seems to sound a bit sharper and responds nicely when I blip the throttle. Test run tomorrow so I will update after that.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the reply. I brought the bike 6yrs ago so I suspect you probably did it some time prior to 2014 possibly after 2011/12?

I will check the pilot screw settings.

I'm liberal with the K&N oil but I don't think I flood it any more on this bike than the last or indeed the Tiger but I will bear the point in mind.

I've no ignition advancer fitted (as far as I am aware). I will check the TPS, I've never done so on this one to date.

Otherwise the end-can is the only difference between the two bikes. My original had a Quill T3 can (road legal) and I think it seemed to suit the bike well, it could well be that the Delkelvic does not.

I'll check the setup this week and let you know what I find. Thereafter if all is as it should be I may consider trying a new can; its bonus time of year. I was going to treat the bike to a new rear shock too!

I hope your well too

When was the K&N filter washed out and reoiled last?

It's always clean!

The interesting point is that it is two exhausts on one side of the EXUP valve that are sooty so it suggests a fueling issue on one half of the carb bank rather than a lack of air across all four.

Morning Mike,

I brought this bike from a guy Northampton way, you put me in touch with him via the forum, (you did my original in Worthing, which by the way, I should never have sold, especially for a GS!!!  :'( ) )

Delkelvic exhaust on this one, baffle in. I'm a 3rd, 4th, 5th gear style of  rider keeping it spinning 8-10000rpm when I'm in the twisties. Rarely do motorway long hauls.

I was wondering if the pilot screws need adjusting? K&N air filter fitted. I do tend to think this has been like it since I brought it with 20k on it, its now on 36K miles

Ooh oooooh .... so very nice. I have Nitron on my Tiger Sport.

I am very tempted to do the same for the Fazer ... enjoy. Have you had the forks modified at all.

P.S very clean too ... Royal Navy standard cleaning there! Top man  :D

« on: 21 March 2021, 03:05:23 pm »
Hi all,

Mine is an 05 Ivanised and I have been using it regularly.

I have just done a 36k service and cleaned and stripped the EXUP. I noted that two faces of the EXUP (left half of the engine) were more sooty than the right. My exhaust is also quite sooty too. I have always balanced the carbs so I do not think is it as simple as just a balance. The plugs were not sooty but neither were they that nice grey/brown; more brown. As I did the plugs first, I did not take particular note if two were noteworthy!

I used a infra-red thermometer to measure the exhaust temps but I struggled to get a consistent position to be certain of my results but that also tends to suggest there is a difference in fuelling.

I have always had my suspicions that the bike bike runs a bit a rich and is not as sharp on throttle response as my first Gen 1 after is was Ivanised.

I know for certain my current bike was Ivanised by Mike (Falcon69) - I am hoping he will chip in with a response to this.

Thoughts please ?

How about I just turn them off like I would with my high beam  :think

Good answer! ... I was a jessing a bit .... but there are a lot out there with lights that are badly set and blinding!

Personally I actually think less is more at night and let your night vision look into the periphery of you beam. After 40yrs of riding I still don't feel the need to fit them to either of my bikes but each to their own.

I've tried a few different ones over the years from the usual cheap chinese ones, the budget halfords (still Chinese)ones, Oxford ones (Avoid) and have now settled on the genuine Yamaha replacements. I have to say they are by far the best ones I've had. They are seriously bright, well made and they actually look more natural with the bike unlike some of the other aftermarket stuff

Heres a link to the cheapest price I can find for the ones I have

Did you have to change the flasher unit with these ones?

Has anyone found a UK legal replacement LED indicator lamp that works! Straight swap, no fiddling required?

it had a air filter about 4k miles ago...... if you all think its ok , thats good enough for me...... i just expected the plugs to be a bit more on the brown side of black....... the only reason i took them out to check was because the end can exit pipe looked a bit sooty....... its running ok though, all be it a bit juicy on the mpg ....

cheers

My first Fazer post Ivanising by Mike GTX had textbook brown plugs and I could avg 50mpg two up and spanking it.

My second Fazer also Ivanised by Mike has black plugs much like your photos and a sooty end can. So like you I think it is a little on the rich side even with a K&N air filter.

Rich is safe but I have a hankering for perfect fueling. My intention was to ask my local spanner (who is very good) about it. I also have a number for an ex Yam dealer spanner so I may well ask him too. I shall update this if I find anything out.

The option is to fiddle the mixture screws but the engineer in me would want to measure "how much" and without a sophisticated analyser machine I wouldn't know the best way to go about it.

A pleasure.

I rode my bike yesterday and I'm very pleased i have sorted them, much better!

Thanks for the answer Kebab.

Now I know!!

Personally I have found the R6 shock more than good enough as a solo rider.

As the wife now has her own bike I have been not in the position of having to look to compensate for pillion and luggage on the Fazer.

It is an interesting subject tho and riding a well setup bike with suspenders to suit is fabulous.

Bw

46
Just to clear up a common misconception, pre-load isn't there to make the shock firmer or softer although it will have that effect. The primary use for pre-load is to set up the best effective working range of the spring by dialling out sag. Once sag has been sorted its compression damping that is the main adjustment to make the shock firmer or softer.  :lurk

Agreed spring rate is what it is, you can't change it.

As my inquisitiveness is aroused I have just measured the R6 shock on the bike (on center stand) 300mm overall length and the spring measuring 150mm in length on the 1st click back from max pre-load setting. The Yam standard shock in the loft is also 300mm overall length but the spring measures 160mm on the middle pre-load setting. Note that this is a Maxton spring that was replaced before I brought the bike.

Does this suggest the standard spring length is longer overall and explains the need for more pre-load on the R6 shock?

Can someone with a standard shock and spring measure the spring length out of interest?

Bw

47

Well, i thought that because all the reports i'd seen on here about the R6 shock were all praising it, i thought id save the additional £150 it would have cost to get a Maxton and fit the R6 shock instead.

But i havent really ridden it properly yet, so maybe it will be fine. If not i'll get myself a Maxton or something similar and sell the R6 shock on here.

It works well enough but you are limited as too how much preload adjustment there is. In effect the spring is soft, the 1000 is a lot heavier than an R6 so it make sense if you think about it.

S1000rr shock is the dogs danglies

Is the S1000rr shock a straight bolt in or does it need drilling like the R6?

Bw

49
That's the downside of the R6 shock on the Fazer, there is limited range of pre-load adjustment.

It would be interesting to know the spring rate of them too(?)

I am one notch back from maximum pre-load and I only weigh 75kg and that is for normal road riding

Bw

P.s Get a Maxton shock if you can afford it!

Hi All, I am a new member and hoped I can get advice on a rear shock absorber upgrade please? I have seen lots of posts about R6 and BMW S1000r shock mods but is there any other options that I can buy that bolt straight in but wont break the bank? I have a 2003 Fazer 1000.

Many thanks, Gaz

Hi,

I have a Maxton re-sprung OEM unit sitting in the loft. Sprung for an 85kg rider if it is any good to you?
