FZ6 / Fazer / Instrument Panel
« on: 03 November 2014, 10:15:57 pm »
Noticed on Friday my LCD instrument panel was loose on the FZ6, expect a bit of movement being mounted on rubbers so had enough of the front end off today to have a look and managed to get a long screwdriver in by the headlights to reach up under the panel and one screw was loose so done it up but still a bit of movement which is when I noticed a couple of plastic poles coming off the bottom of the panel and going through holes on the metal plate that the panel fits too. I'm presuming that there should be grommets in these as that is where the movement seems to be but both sides are missing, if there is does anyone know what size grommet it is for the hole?

Of course the next adventure will be working out how to get them on there without having to take most of the front end off  ;)

Thanks for any info

Been looking at the Osram and decided to stick with them, they got the newer version now I'm using Osram Nightbreaker Plus but going for the newer Osram Nightbreaker Ultimate with slightly higher specs but same price.

Thanks for the replies, looking at the prices think I am going to stick to the Osram as I do a lot of night riding and had recent incidents such as foxes and a stag in the middle of the road and the Nightbreakers do give a lot more light out and much whiter. Thinking about it I pay roughly £15 for a pair of Osram H7 and same again for the H4 but I buy them off places like Amazon as a car kit so get two of each. The long life seem like a good idea but would be paying anywhere between £6 and £10 for a single bulb actually works out more expensive so think I will just order another H7 car kit.

Put my spare Osram H7 bulb in after the dipped beam blew last night and I had to ride back along country roads with a £3.99 candle powered bulb fitted lol

I did actually notice a massive difference in brightness and how far a could see with a £3.99 dipped beam fitted and a Osram Nightbreaker highbeam, It did have Philips H7 when I got the bike and that is just as bright but for some reason seem to have rubbish reviews online lol

Hi all, been a while but had a lot going on. Decided to go out for a ride yesterday and blew a bulb which was a pain as I didn't have a spare with me so had to find somewhere open on a Sunday evening that had an H7 in stock to get me home.

I've always used the Osram Night Breaker found it to be excellent, although a little disappointed this time as the bulb has blown within 6 months, when I got the FZ6 I put the new bulbs in and the ones I took out the old Fazer were kept as spares so stuck the spare H7 in today. I knew they didn't last as long as normal bulbs but as one side is H7 and the other H4 it's £30 a time although that are pairs but still at least £30 a year, didn't go too much on some of the reviews I read last night either with people blowing the bulbs in a couple of months although it is down to how much you use the bike and this year I've used it a lot more so maybe that explains it.

Anyway I was wondering if I should keep paying out for the Osrams or go for some cheaper ones that are long life, only listed the H7 I would of course buy the H4's as well but Twenty20 have a bulb with a 4 Year Guanrantee and Osram have one with a 3 Year Guarantee.

Just wonder what peoples thoughts where on the bulbs they use in regards to performance and price and if anyone had used Twenty20 before, these are rough prices as I buy from different places normally.

Thanks for any input.

Nice to see I am an "A" in the postcode ratings, as is most of the surrounding areas apart from one place 4 miles away which is "B" and probably due to the chavs keep nicking scooters and either setting them on fire or smashing them up.

Had an interesting conversation with my actual insurers last year not the broker. I always used to put done that the bike was secure in a locked area but she advised me to change it to "kept on private property" as it made no difference to my premium but during the day is I left the bike out the front of the house, still on private property and it got damaged or stolen I would not be covered as I have basically declared that when it is at home the bike is in a secure locked area at all times.

Thanks for that Foxbass, actually checked the chain again on Thursday as had a couple of long trips last couple of days and thinking probably time for a new chain anyway as this one seems to have been a big naff that the previous owner put on it decent quality chain and probably few thousand miles left in it but it's got about 6 tight spots so a pain in the rear to adjust.

Local broker recommended MCE as they no longer do bikes, they were on a comparison site I used and had nothing but constant phone calls, from two different numbers they use they came out about 12th on my quotes with Hastings Direct in at £75 and that included UK/Europe recovery, protected NCB, £750 for motorcycle gear, 10,000 miles plus a couple of other bits. Only thing was £20 set up fee and same again for legal cover.

Read some of the reviews on MCE and not a bad company but if you use comparison sites they can be a pain in the rear even if you say you taken out insurance some people where still getting 20 calls a day, still used my old mobile number and got it on silent and never answer it so doesn't bother me  :b

Well I will leave the disposible email active for a month before deleting it, well providing I've had all the quotes back so I can email them and request my info is removed from there systems. Had my first call from MCE today but missed it and just read they constantly phone and hang up so won't be answering them and end of the day will just pay 99p or get a free sim as it's a £10 phone, just a number I use just to give so my actual home and mobile number aren't known.

Did get a funny email from my current broker today asking me to comment on my experience with them when they phoned me, think when they read it tomorrow morning they will wish they never asked  :lol

Interesting site by the way I bookmarked that.

Thanks for all the replies, I've just done the comparison sites and got some quotes as low as £75 for fully comp although it started to add up when I added extras on that I normally have like legal cover although still a lot cheaper. Was surprised to get around 15 quotes cheaper than I currently have although looking at some of the independent sites to compare companies there were a few that had really negative ratings based on user comments.

Still be handy to print out a selection of quotes and take them in to my broker see what they say if they think I am going to leave and go elsewhere.

I did use my real name and address Punkstig after reading the terms and conditions as I had to put my reg in and it's cross checked, although I used my pay as you go back up mobile which I can change the sim and a disposable email plus any junk mail I just use there pre paid envelopes and send the lot back to them lol

Funny was just reading the Martin Lewis stuff, when they phoned today they said that the company weren't offering any discounts so will do what I did last time and go back to a different broker and see what they give me. Strange the reason I changed in the first place was because of this situation a few years ago and my current broker offered me exactly the same cover with the same company for £55 less so think it's time to shop around again.

Just a quick question, before I start using comparison sites and unleashing the spam on me.

Got a call from my broker today, was expecting my insurance to go up by about £20 as I got 9 years no claims and been riding 31 years so was a bit shocked to find it had gone up by almost £80, the next cheapest was £146 more.

I did a mid term adjustment in earlier in the year when I went from my old 1999 Fazer to a the new 2007 Fazer S2 thinking there wouldn't be much difference in renewal as according to several sites they are both Group 12.

I know some companies charge extra the newer the bike due to replacement costs and the value of the bike but wasn't expecting such an increase from a company I been with for years.

I mean a friends son has 2 years no claims, is 21 and driving a 1.8 Seat and paying £2 more a year than me for comprehensive which is a bit of a p*** take considering I've never made a claim and I been on the road 29 years longer than him.

Just wondered if anyone else found insurance being put up by a lot this year?

Well glad that is clearer now and the last post is back to what Yamaha manuals say although the two S2 manuals still don't agree on where the slack should be measured, apart from that the pages are identical  :b

Thanks for all the replies, I normally do the chain on the centre stand then check the slack with it off the stand and sat on it or get someone to sit on it while I get down and check.

Like it's been mentioned does seem a little excessive, it's a chain not a whip and like it was mentioned one manual downloaded from Yamaha shows mid point, other shows where Grahamm said near where the rear shock is.

At the moment it's between 25/30mm bit more in some places as got a couple of tight spots so that's where I adjusted from but like ChristoT said does seem a lot and most of the bike dealers I know and asked have questioned it and said normally they adjust to around 25/30mm.

Thanks for all the input though put my mind at rest a bit as I have never in 31 years of riding on the road had a bike that had the chain adjusted to over 2 inches slack  :\

FZ6 / Fazer / Chain Slack on S2
« on: 16 June 2014, 04:30:57 pm »
Got a question for any S2 owners or anyone that knows the answer.

Every bike I have ever owned chain slack has been 25/30mm so checked my 07 plate S2 the other day in case it needed adjusting and seemed a little slack.

I don't have the manual for it so downloaded them from the Yamaha site, problem is there is the basic one that should come with the bike and then two for the S2 that are more like a full Haynes type.

Looking through them says chain slack should be between 45/55mm which I thought seemed a little bit excessive at 2 inches, after that came the next problem. One S2 manual shows checking the slack up near the front under where the rubber is mounted on the bottom of the swinging arm and the other one shows to check midway along the chain which I have always done with the exception of an Aprilia that I owned.

So basically any 07 or S2 owners/anyone with knowledge on the subject point me in the right direction as Yamaha seems to be arguing with itself in the manuals and doing a search didn't help much either that ranged from 25/55mm.

Thought I would ask as I just read Deefers reply on someone's main bearing  :b

Just wondered if anyone had fitted a Power Bronze Airflow Screen and if it made much difference to the standard screen?

Was hoping for a Skidmarx's screen as they are local to me but only have listed on the site for old Fazer's

This was what I was looking at http://powerbronze.co.uk/902623/818266/831919/AIRFLOW-SCREENS---YAMAHA-FZ-6-FAZER-S2-07-09---BLUE.item

« on: 30 May 2014, 08:42:03 pm »
I guess going by reg prefix will never be entirely accurate due to dealers sometimes selling off older non pre-registered stock..

I've had this, purchased a brand new 2006 Aprilia but as it was only 2 days away from the new registrations it was registered on an 07 plate although there where only a few minor differences between the 06 and 07 models, did make it slightly more confusing as under the seat it gave numbers for the 05 model for replacement parts.

My 07 S2 has bolt on rear footrests, I got the new instruments on mine but it's not the ABS version so seems different there as well would expect all 07's to be the same but they aren't.

If the engine management light is staying on just take it down to a Yamaha dealer and get them to plug there diagnostics into it and will tell you what the problem is, might not even need Yamaha dealer other dealers have the things needed. Only reason I mentioned Yamaha was I think it is some of the newer Triumphs have to go to a main dealer, that's why I got an S2 and not the Speed Triple I was looking at as the dealer did say I would have to have it serviced at a Triumph dealer.

If your lucky they will do the diagnostic part for free, once you know what is wrong can either stick with them or take it somewhere else or do it yourself depending on what it is.

It is standard, think it was changed under some EU law for bikes built after a certain year not saying it applies every where but friend of mine did a twin headlight mod and they failed him on the MOT for it although bit like number plates and pipes I know people that do all these mods put the original back on for the MOT and swap back over as soon as they get home.

It's like most modern bikes don't have the on/off switch for lighting unless it's cheap made junk made in places you never heard of lol

FZ6 / Fazer / Re: immobilizer system
« on: 28 May 2014, 04:25:34 pm »
I had a similar problem so said I would only buy the bike if the red master key was supplied which in the end it was after his soon to be ex wife gave it back to him.

I did contact Yamaha and they said if anything like the immobiliser or ECU developed a fault I would have to replace the ECU, ignition barrel/immobiliser, petrol cap, seat lock and helmet lock rather than just the faulty item. They looked that up for my S2 and would have cost £750 direct from Yamaha, then there was the problem if I needed a new key although I did find a couple of interesting places as ways round this, expensive but still cheaper.

Put the Osram Nightbreaker Plus in my old 99 Fazer, even though my new FZ6 S2 had bright headlights changed the Philips for the Osram as well get them off Amazon as I got a car kit so two bulbs and four of the 5w capless for free so got a spare bulb for each at less than half the price a shop wants.
