Hello, think I'm in the right place
« on: 13 November 2015, 09:22:11 pm »
Hi

I'm a confused middle aged South London non leather wearing biker who's currently between bikes. Retired my much loved and extremely reliable (some say dull) Honda 900Hornet that I clocked up just under 100k/miles on a few weeks ago and looking to replace it with either a Fazer 1000 or MT-09.

My local dealer has a tidy 2008 (standard) FZ1 with 13k on the clock @ £4k and an 6000mile MT-09 with ABS 2014 plate @ £5900, haven't test ridden an MT yet but the dealer is gushing about it & reckons the weight advantage coupled with it being a Triple makes it a Fazer killer - not sure I want to test ride one as I'd kind off settled on getting a Fazer and hesitant to fall for a bike that's £2k more

Hi and welcome.
The  FZ1 and MT09 are very different  bikes  from each other and different again from a Hornet, the only way to find out which would suit you best is a decent test ride on both.
Saying that the MT09 is fairly new whilst the FZ1 is 7 years old so that is another thing to take into consideration plus how well has it been looked after in those 7 years.
I have had my FZ1 for 18 months and I plan to keep it for another 18, then I will be looking at something smaller and lighter and the MT09 ,Tracer and MT07 are high on my list of replacements but will not buy any one unless I have a decent test ride.

Hello there .welcome to the forum

umm FZ1s , fazer gen 2,,,a strange bond with owners these bikes have,,some (as I do ) love em,,mod them, get them to fit you, tune em..others soon get fed up with them and move on.

I see there are owners who have clocked up 40k miles and kept the bike as standard, and still love them.

You got to get on one and try them,,i had no problems with mine.

Thanks for the welcome. Will try both next week but at the moment the FZ1 ticks the most boxes. TheMT-09 sure looks pretty but from reading various forums it appears you have to spend on re-mapping and suspension before they're even rideable, not sure about the 'over the front wheel' Supermoto riding position,  luggage wise they're limited and until you sort a new rear shock possibly scary, what with the front end being so light. Also, on a security front I cant see anywhere to feed through a chain other than the back wheel. So, Looks, Weight and the fun of a Triple motor are the MT's winning points.

However, the FZ1 maybe heavier (30kg's?) but appears better built, more versatile and probably less attractive to Central London parking bay bike thieves. As the bike will live in the back garden I've emailed Pragmasis to ask if they do an anti-pinch pin (to go with the Almax & Hardie) I already own.

The FZ1 doesn't come with security markings, Is it worth forking out on Datatag (the MT does has Datatag)?

Cheers folks, should be picking her up tomorrow. Am going to fit Datatag just for peace of mind and maybe mushrooms too, apart from that I'll leave her standard for a while.
Only other thing I need to find out is whether you can feed  a chain (almax s3) through the engine or frame rather than just through the back wheel

Can't figure out how to post images ( Win10 doesn't seem to recognise forum tabs & Chrome will only let me post images from an url, not my pc)
