"Elected City of London Corporation votes to cut Square Mile speed limit to 20mph."

That's all streets within the City of London, presumably that includes Lower and Upper Thames Streets. Dunno when it's effective from, or whether there are more steps to go through, but blimey!!

That's ridiculous - you'd never get up to 20mph in the City

Aren't Upper & Lower Thames Street both red routes?

If so, then they are not under the City of London's control so they cannot set the limits on them, that's up to Boris & the GLA as they are their responsibility.

When can you ever get up to 20mph in the City?!

Transport for London's latest figures state that for the first quarter of 2011/2012 the average traffic speed on major London roads for the 12 hours between 7am to 7pm was 19.33 mph and over the same period was 8.98 mph across Central London.

Islington already has a blanket 20mph limit.......

But as a recent report showed that the average speed of traffic in London has risen from 8.7mph to 9.1mph, it doesn't make much of a difference.

you must travel at the wrong times I often have to slow down for the speed cameras, In a car. 30mph through limehouse link is bad enough :(

This was started in Portsmouth a few years back and in my mind it just means failure. But then I visit certain parts of Portsmouth with the limit and realise its roads around houses with just a single lane down the centre with cars either side and you can see the hazard. Problem is that if you're at one end of a road and someone is coming YOU have to wait, as soon as the car is past you tend to speed it up a bit to get through before the next car comes along. They have sorted it a bit by making some roads one way but not all are like this. Different from London's situation though.

Is the limit enforced or does everyone still go at 30-40?

GrahamM looks out of his front window.  Yep, that's dead right.

Of course that doesn't stop idiots from blatting up and down the roads here, since there's absolutely no way to enforce it apart from "the cop in your head".

there are number of 20mph roads near me in sw London,  plus speed bumps. silly really,  just bunches up cars  then they insist on driving down middle of road then flash me for riding bike on correct side of the road.  really winds me up :-(
