Hi all
Just want to take the opportunity to thank everyone for all the advice i have over the years.
As the title suggests last friday whilst riding through Solihull a private hire taxi driver decided to cross from the other side of dual carriageway into the right side of my bike, at the time i was at 30mph and did not have any time to brake this sent the bike over and into a lampost throwing me over the handle bars and into the wall of Argos.

Resulting in a 4 day stay in hospital a fractured right knee, fractured right foot and a very badly bruised left elbow, all things considered i have got of very lightly because if the lampost was not there the bike and myself would have gone straight into the wall head first..............
Hopefully the taxi driver will be prosecuted by the police.
However i know i have several months of healing in front but i am now not sure if i will ever be mentally able to get back to riding as i keep getting flash backs to the accident.

Has anyone been through a similar experience with flash backs and if so how did you deal with them?

Cheers all

Ok, well the bike is well past 70K now, I generally do the normal service items such as plugs air filter, oil and any extra bits it requires.

The bike is pretty much on the road every day as I use it to do a 60mile round trip commute, the only thing that makes me take it off the road is snow, the slow starting has been going for sometime now.

I am thinking it might be the battery after the comments as I have had the bike since 2008 with only 9K on the clocks and I know I have had a couple of times where the battery has gone dead so as far as I am concerned it is still on its original battery.

Oh and I use pro FST in my fuel to clean the carbs out once or twice a year and never had a problem with it.

Hi all,

My fazer is slow to start first thing or when it has been stood, it actual sounds as though one cylinder starts to fire then the others gradually kick in untill finally it ticks it over.

I have changed the spark plugs and the usual service its but i am not sure where else to look.

Cheers

I have got well over 70k on mine now, i had it back in 2008 with just 8k on it all i have ever done is the normal service, change chains and recently the clutch.....which gave me a load of grief which is on the forum, the only reason i ask is while sorting my clutch out i had to get a new pressure plate from a dealer and they told me that these were only designed to last around 60k.
With my recent knee op i was considering something with shaft drive but still love the ride i get drom this even though it is a constant battle with the rust round by the engine mounts.

Hi All,

What is the reasonable amount of miles I should expect to get out of my Fazer before seriously having to
consider trading it in?

The springs in particular as the heavy springs can cause problems with the sprocket cover mechanism

Ensure the sprocket cover adjustment is done correctly

Screw in the cable adjuster full at the lever end.
Remove the rubber bung on the sprocket cover
Loosen the lock nut with a deep spanner ( it will loosen with a crack and frighten the crap out of you)
Turn the lock nut anti clockwise a full turn
Hold you fingers lightly on the clutch lever
Turn the centre screw clockwise with a good fitting flat screwdriver
You will feel the lever moving out
Keep turning the screw until the lever is about 5 to 6mm from the lever housing.
Tighten the locknut.
Replace the rubber bung
Take the final adjustments at the cable adjuster

You may have to resort as I did and replace the friction plates with OEM also, they are expensive but never had any issues afterwards

All Sorted, as a temp solution I have put my old springs back in while waiting for new springs from Yamaha.
all issues with the clutch dragging have now disappeared and this is still with the EBC friction plates so am now finally
happy with bike again and not about to launch it onto the scrap pile.  :D

Cheers all for your Help and advice.

I have on several times, what I have are ebc heavy duty friction plates in because of the milage I do, how ever what I noticed where all the friction plates were black in stead of just two of them as per the Haynes manual.

Sodding failed...... drained some oil out last night and this morning it seemed to have worked.....same route home half way home got off the m42 by NEC and island was rammed.
I ended up kangarooing round as the clutch would not disengage and kept stalling bike, once I got moving again off the island it seemed to settle down a little bit was still difficult to Change gear or get neutral..... So I suppose that all I am left with is an oil change see if that will sort it as I am now out of ideas.

Oil was changed about 3months ago so still got another couple of thousand miles to go and it was silkolene I got from my local bike shop. So should still be ok saying that I have just let about 100ml out and it the level is now mid way up the sight glass so see how that goes tomorrow.

Ok so just been down to car park and checked the oil level in the sight window and it is up around or slightly over the top dot so need to let some oil out, not sure how this has happened as I check it regular and the only time I would have put oil in would be when it is down by the bottom mark and never up to where it is now.

Hi All,

I have just recently changed my friction plates, steel plates, springs and pressure plate on my clutch.
Before that I changed the clutch cable, however when the clutch get hot, normally half way during my ride home from work,
it starts to drag and becomes almost impossible to get neutral.

In the morning it is fine until just round the corner from work.

I am now pulling what little hair I have left out as I have now run out of ideas as to what could be causing this.

and yes I left the friction plates to soak overnight and have check the cable tension and all is fine.

Could an oil change fix the issue or is it something else I have missed?

I did a search in the forum and came across a post with exactly the same issues but there was no solution as it seems that it sorted it self out.

Cheers

Ok so need some more advice please, took the bike for my normal 60mile commute which involves a bit a city riding, back lanes and some motorway to finish off, at the start the clutch was sweet but by the end when I pulled off the motorway I noticed that with the clutch lever pulled in the was a slight drag.

The same happened again on the way home I have stripped all the plates out and everything seams ok so now at a complete lose.

Could it be cause of the new plates and springs and will settle down or is it something else I am missing?

Cheers all

Check that one of the threads have not snapped, the mirrors are only held on by two cast threads.

If you take your infill panels out you can see them.

Hi All,

Thanks for the advice, finally back on the road.

I figured out what was wrong last night, It turns out I had the plate with the slightly larger diameter that fits over the Anti judder spring in the wrong place causing the clutch to be constantly engaged.

Felt good to be back in the saddle on my commute to the office this morning, clutch was good to start with but by the time I reached the office it started to drag a little so guess still some fine tuning to do.

It alters the take-up point with the same effect as the cable adjuster on the handlebar has.
Wind in the latter so that it's pretty much at the start of its range (also has the benefit of reducing the exposure of the slot so less rain and dust gets into the cable). Then at the bottom, with the locknut slackened off, turn the screw in until the take-up point is near where you like it to be. Tighten up the locknut, bung the bung back in. Fine-tune at the top end of the cable.

Cheers mate,

Last question when I had the clutch back together last night I noticed it felt stiff/tight is this due to the new plates or the new springs being almost completely compressed?

cheers mate,

Ok so have looked at the guide you pointed too, but what is the adjustment on this actuator
that I need to do as the guide only really states replacing the grease?

Cheers

Didn't know there was adjustment at the bottom thought that was for the thunder cat, ok so how do I adjust the bottom adjuster on the clutch cable?

Yeah I transferred that over from the old plate.

Ok so what am I doing wrong, positioned the new pressure plate so that it could not move when pressed against the clutch plates,

Did the spring bolts up as deefer said and at each stage I tried
The clutch lever to Make sure it was working.

Put the cover back on started the bike up and nothing, when I put the bike in gear with the clutch lever pulled all the way in the rear wheel is still turning under power and that is with the new clutch cable adjusted all the way out.

I soaked the plates at the weekend for around 4 to5 hours, so have stripped it all out and am getting going to soak them overnight.

Have missed something.

Cheers all

Cheers Deefer,

When you say dots which do you mean as I don't recall seeing any markings on my old pressure plate?

How tight should I do the screw up, the book says 8nm but my torque wrench does not go down that low so was thinking maybe
just hand tight with a screw driver?

Also with the new plate fitted should the last plate be level with the basket or slightly recessed?

Cheers
