Clothing Superstore
« on: 06 September 2022, 07:53:08 pm »
I'm after a few new items of clothing, gloves, waterproof jacket, etc, but am fed up with buying online then having to send stuff straight back due to being ill fitting or the like.

I'm in NW London and used to get everything I ever needed from the J&S Superstore near Watford after spending a couple of hours trying loads of clothing on.
But that's gone now and was wondering if there were any of the larger type superstores about any more these days?

There’s Sportsbike Shop at Reading and Harlow. A trip south to Godalming would get you to Motolegends, who always have plenty of stock, will let you try on as much kit as you like, and only sell quality stuff.

They have a store in Hangar Lane, but more of a shop with a shit load of stuff crammed into it.
But it's in such a poor location that the staff literally pounce on you on entry then don't leave you alone.
Was looking for a jacket last time I was there and she brought out about 5 that were all non waterproof.
Kept explaining I rode all year round IN ENGLAND but she just didn't get it.
She was relentless though and in the end I'd just had enough and left.
So although that is close, it's still off putting.
There's also Infinity on the opposite side of the roundabout, again just a shop though. I was hoping for somewhere much larger to browse through.

Its not, its just moved to London Colney. But NW london (very lucky we have loads of shops) -
  • - Inifinity motorcycles, just clothing, medium sized, Watford
  • - LLoyd Cooper M/c, small clothing dept, Watford
  • - Triumph and HarleyDavidson main dealers, small clothing depts
  • - KTM main dealer in HemelHempstead, only KTM and some other brands of clothing.
  • - Daytona Motorcycles in Ruislip Manor, medium sized clothing dept.
  • - HGB motorcycle Ruislip Manor, medium sized clothing Dept
  • - Urban Nomads, Ruislip Manor, medium sized clothing Dept
  • - Greater London Motorcycle, Edgeware, medium sized clothing Dept
Then for the large clothing stores -
  • - Sportbikeshop, Milton keynes, Harlow and Reading, very large clothing dept.
  • - Inifinity motorcycles, Staples Corner, large clothing dept
  • - J&S accessories, Staples Corner, large clothing dept

Cheers for that lot, there's a few stores listed that i already knew but i had forgotten about.

Think you're confusing Staples Corner with Hangar Lane though.

The Watford J&S used to be a huge open plan warehouse and was nice and easy to move about in, i used to spend ages in there, especially when buying a jacket.

I am sick of ordering stuff online then having to go through the rigmarole of sending it back, normally at a cost too.
Plus I'm very fussy about gloves and jackets, so really need to try them on.

If sizing was accurate online it would make life a lot easier, but the reality is that sizes differ massively per manufacturer.

Tell me about it!

I have a 32" waist and 35" hips.

I bought a pair of (supposedly) 32" jeans, when I tried them on, they slid straight off...!  :eek :o :rolleyes

It's a free service and i seem to remember they collect from home, though don't quote me.   I order a couple of sizes to try at a time, the only downside is having to pay for all up front but is easy enough

I bought my last jacket by chance in the Sportsbike Shop in Milton Keynes because we had to go up there for a funeral, but I tried on about 10 jackets that day before finding one that I liked. That would be a lot of disappointment and sending of stuff back.
That's why J&S Watford was so good, they had hundreds of everything to try on.

Milton Keynes shop is not big, in case you've not been before. They keep a lot of their stock out of sight, although they were extremely polite and helpful when I was there.

Mate of mine mentioned this place too, in Aylesbury.

Went to the Infinity & J&S stores on Hangar Lane and tried about 20 pairs of gloves on with no luck.
The shop assistant in J&S kept asking me "how waterproof do you want the gloves to be", which I found slightly irritating.
My response of "I don't want wet hands" just didn't seem to sink in.

So I gave up on the gloves for now and moved onto a waterproof over jacket that I kept spotting, but was not sure if they would go anywhere near a textile bike jacket, especially as I'm not the smallest fella out there.
But I was more than pleasantly surprised when I tried on the same size as my bike jacket and it fitted over it with ease.
I want it for those days when it's like a monsoon like we've been having recently. Not only is it really well made and fully waterproof but they're a bargain price online too. They never had the size and colour I wanted in the shop, as I wanted the hi vis yellow in one size bigger. The sleeves were a fractional longer than the correct size which I prefer when I'm being hammered with rain.

On the way home I popped in to see a friend of mine, and told him where I'd just been.
He then pulls out a new pair of unused fully waterproof gloves for me to try on and they fitted!!! And he gave them to me for free. Result.  :D

These jackets go up to 6XL, and you just order the same size as your bike jacket and it compensates for the extra size, and they are quite generous too. In Black or Yellow.

Would've bought one ages ago but i just presumed they were designed to go over leathers rather than bulky textile jackets. My jacket is only two years old but in very heavy rain it absorbs the water like a sponge, then eventually starts to leak in places. So this is a really good solution for me. I really don't mind riding in the rain at all, as long as i remain dry under the wet gear.

Yeah unless its Gore-tex its not worth when it comes to a proper jacket and trousers. When Finances allow I am getting a Richa jacket and Alpinestars Trousers and then get the top half od the AS trousers sewed into the Jacket.
