Thanks for the update Beuleux.
Glad you got it done, for piece of mind if nothing else.
Yeah hasn't made much difference to the knock but my mind is at rest 😅

Well it's winter and I finally got round to revisiting my rear end, in the interests of continuity I opted for a complete OEM bearing seal and bush set. The knock is only reduced by about 50% so my view is its an endemic yamaha design issue and the all do it from new. Its not really an issue now Ive got to the bottom of it and on reflection it's it's tad pedantic for the MOT tester to give me a minor for it as its not mentioned in any previous certificates. Anyways, all good in the hood 👍

« on: 08 September 2022, 09:41:33 pm »
How strange it was missing, there is a blanking chip you can get for them if you want to remove the exup so check that hasn't already been done by the previous owner. I don't know what it looks like or where it goes though.

When the servo packed up on my old gen1 it ran like shite up to about 6k. When I fixed it it was back to shit off a shovel, so yes I think there will be a significant difference if its not  chipped already.

« on: 19 July 2022, 10:18:34 am »
hmm, connection for the yahama immobilisor perhaps..

Got a wide angle shot of where these connectors are on the bike..?
They are in the fairing loom connector bundle left hand side under the fairing inner cover. Quite possibly an immobiliser but I thought it already came factory wired, I have since discovered the four plug one is for yamaha diagnostic tool. Next time I have an excuse to take the fairing inners out I will take a wider angle pic and maybe put the matter to bed to satisfy my pedantic curiosity.

I've had the gen1 and gen2, I certainly wouldn't describe them as slow, so something is making your bike slow. You say it's a bit tired, do you know when it was last serviced or what was done? First thing I'd say is check the air filter and check there are no blockages in the fuel lines and give the carbs a clean. I'd start there and see if there's any improvement. As for the handling they can be a bit twitchy if the suspension is not set up for your weight. I found my gen2 was like that when I got it, the previous owner had set the rebound to its maximum position so check that out too.

These are the first steps I would take before more indepth investigation

Got chatting to a very knowledgeable guy, about the development of hydrogen engines.
That would be a legendary fazer mod 😎

Used daily through the friggin blackwall tunnel grrrrrr!!!!!
Hopefully get a job this side of the water soon  :rolleyes
Does it still have that weird chemical stink? Could never figure out what caused it 🤷‍♂️
The fun thing about tunnels is you can do accidental backfires on carb bikes 😅

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Tail section removal procedure?
« on: 03 July 2022, 10:40:43 pm »
When I removed my rear mudguard for a tail tidy it was just a matter of disconnecting the indicators and number plate light and removing the 4 12mm bolts and the whole plastic assembly dropped down and the cables pulled through a hole. However someone had been in there before I think to make it easier as I understand Yamaha hid those connectors at the factory. Does this video help...

https://youtu.be/qE54XrM0z78

I have a spare tail tidy you are welcome to for collection from Gloucestershire or Banbury where I work or I can post it at cost. (Had to buy a different one to allow for a givi rack)
Thanks for digging out that video, yes it was helpful as it appeared to me the cable hole is underneath the plastic tool holder tray but on the vid it looks to be just behind it although the N is slightly different because of the grab rail.

Thanks for the offer of the tail tidy but I'm one of the few who like the original tail piece, which was surprisingly cheap from Fowlers. The expensive bit was the rear cowl with intergrated handles at a whopping £260

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Tail section removal procedure?
« on: 03 July 2022, 03:12:09 pm »
Hi all
I have fitted a bodge number plate light to my recently rear ended fz1s so I can still ride it while I wait for parts to arrive from fowlers (up to three weeks 🤬). While I was at it I checked how I would remove it later.

I've checked the service manual but it doesn't describe the actual procedure, the sticking point for me was how to remover the tool holder tray so the cables can be pushed out, the seat stay brackets prevent it from coming out the top way. Or is it a question of removing the side panels and splash guard so the entire subframe can be removed and the parts disassembled off the bike?

I'm sure I will figure it out eventually over a weekend of tantrums in the garage. If anyone knows the correct method I would greatly appreciate the input and only have to suffer half a day of tantrums (or maybe a whole day) 😅

Thanks 👍

« on: 28 June 2022, 09:32:43 pm »
To be fair most mainstream marques Ford, vauxhall. Peugeot, vw etc are all pretty reliable and much of a muchness for your needs, but all will have model specific endemic  issues which you would need to research before viewing for example corsa d models camchain tensioner packs up every 60k so check service history, if you're after cheap motoring you should get 50mpg out of the smaller engines and more if its deisel. With a roof rack even the smallest car will get a surfboard on plus a 1m overhang is legally permitted.

As for road tax again check the model specifics due to the government diesel initiative in the 20's some vehicles are as little as £20-30 Road tax. A decent battery should be OK to he used every 2-3 weeks but over a period will need a long run or a charge. Bike maintenance knowledge is easily converted to cars so I'm sure you will have no problems in that regard.

T4's are good vans and pretty cool to boot but insurance will be classed as commercial even if your use isn't so be prepared for a higher quote, as with all vans everything is more expensive,  tyres, parts, etc especially being a vw. Road tax for a big van is the higher bracket £275 from memory. On the plus side you can get loads of stuff in them maybe even your fazer.

I've been sold some right old dogs in the past, there are so many things that aren't immediately obvious it may be worth a RAC inspection if you're spending up to 3k

In the last 3-4 years I have got 3 of my kids through thier car test, 2 of them during lockdown, yes there was a backlog but if you've got half a day to sit on your phone refreshing the booking page a cancellation can be got easily enough.

Good luck and happy shopping 👍

On closer inspection of my bike I have noticed what looks to be a bent rear subframe as the pillion seat no longer sits evenly flush both sides. Not sure if this could bring it into write off territory, and not sure the "approved agents" will even notice

Yes i have, I'm liable for £650 excess if I crash it and that's it. I will of course be thoroughly checking it for existing marks and make sure they are all loggedAll companies/corporations will blag as much as they can off you given half a chance. You are right, be very careful what you sign

What I meant was, check that under no circumstances will you be expected to pay the hire charge. The daily rate is often astronomical. Your 'agent' will try to claim this back from the 3rd party, and if it is for a long period it can be more than the value of your bike repair. That's where your agent makes their money. Terrible stories of 3rd party refusing to pay for hire as excessive, and the bill landing on you. As said, check the small print, don't necessarily believe what your 'friendly' agent tells you.

Hmmmm yes, I did ask that very question to the agent and she was adamant that I am not liable but yes it is concerning I might even cancel it cos I don't really need it, it's just useful that's all, I might even just buy a spare bike really am in two minds about this, I have the full agreement printed I will scrutinise it thoroughly later

Be careful what you sign for the 'loan' bike. Read the small print and check what you might be liable for if things don't turn out as planned.

Thanks for the info, the "loan" bike is actually hired by the insurance company from the "approved" agent. Its coming from the Midlands and I'm on the south coast, I'm not sure where they're actually taking my bike but I know it's a different company.

Odd thing, the accident claim line is a separate company from the insurers, and the actual insurers are a separate company from my policy company. So far there are three or four companies involved 🙈

I thought they're all trying to blag as much as they can from each other.

« on: 11 June 2022, 09:51:16 am »
Yesterday I stopped at a pelican crossing, heard some tyre screeching behind me, then got rear ended by a combo van 😅

Bike rear end is fucked and I'm OK other that the back and shoulder strain from sudden inertia and kepping a 220kg bike upright.

Getting an SV650 loan bike and someone's coming to collect my FZ1 for "assessment"

Anyone got any idea how long these things take from recent experience? Back in the day you had to go round three garages getting quotes.
