FZS Clutch Cover Bearing Instal Help Required
« on: 13 April 2021, 02:33:19 pm »
Getting my clutch cover powder coated has turned into a drama. I'm considering buying a new cover if a good used one doesn't turn up soon. However I'd need to fit the 2 bearings that support the clutch operating rod. The top one is doable, but would anyone have any experience of fitting the tiny one that is located in the centre of the cover. Thanks in advance.

Long time since I changed one of these and it's rare, are you sure it needs replacing?

From memory, so don't quote me.   Sometimes they just fall out or come out when you release the pull lever.  If it does it's possible the casing is buggered, so check it.  If the bearing isn't gripping the outer race surface and there's not too much clearance between them.  A light coating of bearing fit will sort it, slide in the new bearing, use the pull rod as a guide and to seat the bearing and make sure the top bearing is in position before fitting the lower.  Leave the pull rod in place while the bearing fit goes off.   Ensure the pull rod is smooth in operation.  If the damage is too much for bearing fit, it's a new casing.

If all well the casing the bearing should stay in place when the pull rod in removed.  You can either tap them out (use a soft mallet) or just gently warm up the bearing housing and it should drop out.  If you're quick, you should be able to insert the new one while the casing is still warm and the bearing will slip in easily, use the rod as mentioned above.

Hi Gnasher, Thanks for your reply, very helpful. The saga so far is....when I bought the bike it had a small mark on top of the clutch cover(black engine). It annoyed me then, but I put off doing anything about it. A year ago I had the cam cover and alternator covers powder coated and was pleased with the outcome. Took the clutch cover last month to the same place. Collected it today and the colour match is way off. I made enquiries with an alternative powder coaters, but they reckoned they'd have to use far too abrasive media to remove the powder coating thus destroying the finish on the cover. I'm thinking along the lines of buying a new cover, unless I can get an unscratched used one. A new one would come minus bearings, which led to my post. I did wonder if the operating rod was used as a mandrel to install the lower bearing. One of those jobs you wish you'd never started. If my garage had been warmer I'd have gone down the RS Paints route. Thanks again for your advice, which is really useful. :thumbup

I'm a bit surprised your powder coater says that removing the old powder coat would be too abrasive - when I had previous powder coating removed from my wheels is was done using a chemical dip.

The "too abrasive" comment was made by an alternative firm, not the one who'd done the work originally.
I'm going to see a recommended guy tomorrow who reckons he can sort it. Don't know what a chemical dip could do to the bearing inside the cover. I'll find out tomorrow.

I use Tripple S for powder coating - they specialise in bike parts and do a brilliant job although I've not used them since they were taken over (they do cars as well now). I've always been advised to remove bearing before powder-coating as the heat in the ovens can apparently also cause problems.

The small bearing in the centre of the cover is too difficult to get out. If the guy says tomorrow he can do the job, I'll worry about that bearing when I get the cover back. It's ok at the moment after one session in the oven. Like I posted yesterday, wish I'd never started, as all for the sake of a small chip in the paint. :'(

I half expected it to be missing after it's first visit to the powder coating oven, but it's still firmly in place. :lol
