The little things
« on: 07 January 2014, 03:08:06 pm »
Does anyone else find that anything different about your kit or process screws up getting ready to ride (your bike)?

I recently started wearing earplugs when riding and the first few times I put them in I found it all a bit clumsy.  Usually its jacket zipped, collar velcro down, helmet on, fastened, gloves and were off.

With the plugs it was more, zip up first? plugs in next or first? helmet, gloves? drop glove! KEYS! etc  In fact once I forgot to do my helmet strap up because of it and had to pull over.  Now its second nature but its odd how it can affect you. (I am saying "you" here in the vein hope its not just me)

Same thing happened with helmet on at the fuel pumps.  My usual garages require helmet off to fill up and 99% of the time I use those for convenience without any bother but one near my office doesn't.  When I do use that one and fill up, helmet left on, gloves off to get out wallet etc I sometimes forget to put the gloves back on and only realise when I pull the clutch in.

I had this issue when I started wearing my neck warmer thing. I would only half zip my jacked to make sure the collar was on top of the neck warmer to stop the air from getting underneath. The result was that on numerous occasions I would either ride off without fastening my helmet, or without actually zipping up my jacket fully... and sometimes both...

I have my routine for getting geared up, and it very rarely changes from that routine. But the odd time it does, it doesn't really through a wobbler in the works for the rest of my gear.

Wallet in trouser pocket underneath all the motorbike garb.  Then need to buy petrol.....  I hate that.

I put a Bluetooth thingy on my helmet to connect to my phone, first time I used it my routine was totally screwed up. Forgot to do up my chinstrap, clatter, clatter, clatter. I stopped, gloves off, do up helmet, gloves on. Carry on riding.
I hear my phone ringing in my pocket, not put  it onto bluetooth
Stop, gloves off, pull out phone, it stops ringing! Put it onto Bluetooth, gloves on, carry on riding. Phone rings and I answer it via Bluetooth. "hello, this is about your ppi claim". AAAAAARRRRRGGGHHHH!!!!!
It would have been quicker to get the friggin bus!
Stop polishing it and ride the bloody thing!!

Sort of got a set routine that seldom changes. However I did leave home one day and thought it a bit chilly. I went to lower my visor only to find that I'd forgotten to to put a lid over my balaclava.

Ooops.

I've done the "get on the bike without a lid" trick once before too.

I forget to zip up my pockets, so far I have lost a key a £20 note and a tax disc.

Yes - I hadn`t got round to putting it in the disc holder so thought I would take it with me just in case.  :o

No only 6 months, I actually forgot all about it too and only remembered I had lost it when the renewal came through the post.
Then not learning from my mistake put the new one in my pocket, until I sold the bike.

I have just bought another bike and taxed it last week - This time I WILL put the disc on my bike. (It`s in my jacket pocket  :rolleyes )

I have a ritual just about sorted out now (first year back biking), but that's nothing compared to the total shamen-like OCD when I was racing a car and had balaclava, gloves, arm restraints, neck support, etc. even after suiting up. Nobody is as ritualistic / supersticious as racers.  :)

I've only got one ritual, when I put my Gloves on I MUST put my left glove on first !!! If  I forget I have to start over with the gloves.  :lol

Forgetting my ear plugs is damn annoying, but worst of all was forgetting to do up my lid. It was a oh foc moment when it started to lift off my head in lane 3! Doubt it was ever gonna come off but felt like it!

Not gear related but I left the key in the seat lock once in Russell Square all day, teaming with people and wasn't sure whether to be grateful or insulted nobody nicked the bike  :lol
